Ghost Town Village, formerly known as "Ghost Town in the Sky", is an abandoned Wild West-themed amusement park in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, United States.
It sits atop Buck Mountain, with a top elevation of 4,650 ft.
The land to build the park was purchased from a local land owner named Uncle Dan Carpenter in 1960.
Folklore says that R.B. Coburn had overheard a story of Uncle Dan Carpenter losing his sheep in a large cavern on top of Buck Mountain.
R.B. approached Carpenter so he could show him the caverns and his dreams grew for a western tourist town.
Over two hundred locals help construct the 40 replica buildings that comprised the Western Town, located at the Mountain's peak.
nails.
The park opened on May 1, 1961, and quickly became one of Western North Carolina 's most popular tourist attractions.
The park hosted several stars of TV Westerns, such as Laramie and Wagon Train.
Hourly staged gun fights on the main street were a huge draw for visitors.
It used the mountainous terrain it sat on to its advantage and guests would plunge out of the station and directly into a vertical loop before setting off for twists and turns along the mountainside.
However, as the years went by, the park faced challenges under new management and a lack of real maintenance.
Frequently broken roller coasters and rides started to deter visitors, leading to a decline in attendance.
Use these tips on your next theme park trip
Next time you visit a theme park, you may want to use our top tips to make the most of your adrenaline-inducing day out.
Go to the back of the theme park first. Rides at the front will have the longest queues as soon as it opens.
Go on water rides in the middle of the day in the summer - this will cool you off when the sun is at its hottest.
Download the park's app to track which rides have the shortest queues.
Visit on your birthday, as some parks give out "birthday badges" that can get you freebies.
If it rains, contact the park. Depending on how much it rained, you may get a free ticket to return.
Infrastructure issues like water, power, and sewage problems also plagued the park's owners.
And employees began to complain about not receiving their salaries.
These issues sadly led to the park's closure at the end of the 2009 season.
However, the park may see a revival, according to the National Amusement Park Historical Association.
Regional travel guide Blue Ridge Mountain Life noted that some refer to Ghost Town Village as a "cursed amusement park."
The gloomy title refers to the many failed attempts to reopen the park over the years.
But the NAPHA made a Facebook post on May 9, stating that a potential buyer from Florida expressed interest in buying the defunct amusement park.
The same post said that current owner Jill McClure aims to sell it for entertainment purposes rather than to a buyer who will use it for housing.
The buyer envisions "a venue featuring country music, rodeos, and festivals, aiming to keep the park family-friendly."
Meanwhile, one of Europe's biggest theme parks has opened a new Wild West themed holiday village with wagon huts and cowboy bars.
And this top European theme park is getting a brand new ride as well.

Stressed Bill Belichick seen drenched in sweat with Jordon Hudson after rushing through airport to catch flight

Bill Belichick got so hot and flustered during a race to make a flight to Las Vegas on Wednesday that he was sweating through his clothes. Pictures obtained by Daily Mail show the six-time Super Bowl winner and 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson stood at their gate after sprinting through the terminal at Charlotte Douglas International airport. The couple were hoping to make a plane from North Carolina to Las Vegas but their efforts had left Belichick, 73, drenched in sweat. The pictures show the UNC coach and his younger girlfriend talking to a member of airline staff with a huge sweat patch all the way down his back. Unfortunately, he had chosen to wear a light grey hoodie which meant his perspiration could be clearly seen from distance. Belichick was obviously tense as he was seen arriving at the gate at 6:58am, just 16 minutes before his flight to Las Vegas was due to depart. Witnesses also claim that Belichick hadn't even had time to put on his socks, such was the rush he found himself in. Fortunately for the couple, they were allowed to board their flight. They even packed some extremely sparkly luggage as Hudson posted a picture of them wearing their respective championship rings. Tagging their location as Las Vegas, one of Belichick's Super Bowl rings and Hudson's cheerleading equivalent were both front and center of the picture. The purpose of their trip was to attend the grand opening of Tom Brady's Hall of Excellence museum at the Fontainebleau in Sin City. Two days later, Hudson posted a picture of her soaking up the sun in a bikini in California. She was lying on a sunbed with a cocktail in hand and plenty of delicious food next to her. Earlier this week she took a sly jab at Belichick 's ex partner, Linda Holliday, in a sentimental Instagram post, where she name-dropped 'Nantucket Socialites'. Hudson's post was primarily about Melissa Sapini, last year's Miss Massachusetts who relinquished her title this week to the new winner, with Hudson paying tribute to her friend's time on top on Tuesday. The long, sappy post included a jab at Holliday near the bottom, after Hudson gave Sapini tons of shout-outs. 'I know you will keep shining, metamorphosing and taking up space; even when others threaten you and insist that you don't belong, e.g. the "Nantucket Socialites"' Hudson said. Hudon's jab is in reference to an incident where Holliday did not like Hudson and Sapini coming to a certain Nantucket Christmas party late last year. Belichick, 73, and Holliday, 61, broke up in September 2023 after 16 years together. He met Hudson on a flight from Boston to Florida in 2021.

R. Kelly claims prison officials plotted to kill him. Judge denies his release

A judge has denied singer R. Kelly 's request to be freed from prison, saying she lacks jurisdiction to consider the convicted sex offender's allegations that federal prison officials plotted to murder him. U.S. District Judge Martha M. Pacold canceled Friday's scheduled arguments in Chicago, and instead issued a five-page ruling denying his emergency request to serve his time on home detention during a temporary furlough. Born Robert Sylvester Kelly, the 58-year-old Grammy-winning R&B singer is serving sentences at a prison in Butner, North Carolina, for child sex crimes and racketeering. Pacold noted that federal courts have only limited power in such cases, and one by one she examined and rejected various ways Kelly's request could be considered. 'Jurisdictional limitations must be respected even where, as here, a litigant claims that the circumstances are extraordinary,' Pacold wrote. "Kelly has not identified (nor is the court aware of) any statute or rule that authorizes the court to exercise jurisdiction. Thus, the court cannot award relief in this case.' Kelly claimed in a series of filings this month that prison officials solicited white supremacist leaders to kill him, to halt the disclosure of information damaging to prison officials. Kelly's attorney says he was then moved to solitary confinement and purposely given an overdose of medication, which required hospitalization and surgery for blood clots. Pacold noted that Kelly offers no evidence to back up his claims. Government lawyers suggested Kelly had spun a 'fanciful conspiracy.' Known for such hits as 'I Believe I Can Fly,' Kelly was found guilty in Chicago in 2022 of three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticement of minors for sex. In New York in 2021, he was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking. He is serving most of his 20-year Chicago sentence and 30-year New York sentence simultaneously. His appeals have been unsuccessful, including to the U.S. Supreme Court. Kelly has also sought President Donald Trump's help.

First look at new £165million theme park opening in Spanish hotspot – five years after being abandoned

NEW plans have finally been revealed for the reopening of the much-loved Tívoli World amusement park in Spain. Located in Costa del Sol, Tívoli World closed back in 2020 due to financial constraints and the global Covid-19 pandemic. 3 But plans have been approved by authorities who met yesterday and will see if increase in size to include a large tourist complex with shops. First images of the site reveal that it could have a large wheel and a free-fall tower and that the shopping are will have brands like Domino's Pizza, Forster's Hollywood, Rodilla or La Tagliatella, according to Sur in English. These details will be confirmed at a later stage though. There is also expected to be two new hotels. However, the council has agreed that Tívoli will reopen before or alongside the complete complex. In total, the park is expected to cost over €200million (£165million) to redevelop and estimated to create around 1000 new jobs. As part of the agreement, Tivoli World will rehire previous employees - who over the past years have maintained and guarded the park whilst it has been closed to the public. Many former fans of the park took to social media to express their joy at the news. One user said: "It should be brought back bigger and more beautiful. Great." Another added: "Itching to go back to Tivoli." Kids can enter Diggerland for free with this trick Tívoli World was formerly loved for being a family entertainment hub, having originally opened in 1972. The first owner of the attraction - Dane Bent Olsen - dubbed the park as a "factory of illusions" according to Euro Weekly, with fireworks, a rollercoaster, a Chinese pagoda, a lake with boars and around 20 fountains that offered water, light and sound shows. The Mayor, Juan Antonio Lara commented that it was a historic step and that "we have no time to waste". "We're pulling out all the stops to fast-track the process," said Lara. 3 Tivoli World is around a half-an-hour drive from Malaga or about 40 minutes on the train. According to Experience UK, the park is anticipated to reopen in 2028. There are also a number of other great spots to explore surrounding the park including stunning sandy beaches such as Playa de los Álamos. And if you are wanting another attraction for the family, just down the road is Aqualand Torremolinos - which is home to a range of different water slides, a large jacuzzi, children's paradise and will soon have speed racer slides too. A popular beachfront theme park has also been forced to close twice a week. Plus, a major U K theme park to get huge new land by 2027 with rollercoasters, kids rides and indoor attractions. 3
