Pietersen Hails Markram For WTC Heroics: 'Best Innings Any South African'
Last Updated:
Kevin Pietersen praised Aiden Markram's century against Australia in the World Test Championship final as the finest by a South African.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen hailed Proteas opener Aiden Markram's century against Australia in the World Test Championship final as the finest innings ever played by a South African batter in Test cricket. Markram's 136 from 207 balls propelled South Africa to a five-wicket victory, ending a 27-year drought for an ICC trophy.
Markram made his test debut at age 22, heartbreakingly run out on 97, and has since scored eight centuries and 13 fifties. But his average of 36.50 has been below expectations.
He came into the WTC final without a century in his last 16 test knocks and failed to get on the board in the first innings.
Markram's knock at Lord's took the country to their first major cricketing triumph after decades of failure and ensured Markram a place in South African sporting folklore.
Pietersen, speaking as a JioStar expert, said, 'Probably the best innings any South African batter has ever played in Test match cricket. It might not be the most attacking or entertaining in South Africa's Test history, but considering the expectation, the stage, and the pressure after failing in the first innings, it was extraordinary. Whether you're a batter or a bowler, the pressure to deliver when your country is counting on you is immense."
He highlighted Markram's resilience despite the early loss of Ryan Rickelton. 'He still went on to produce something truly magnificent. It's hard to even describe the kind of pressure he was under," added Pietersen, who has South African roots.
South African pacer Kagiso Rabada, whose nine-wicket haul contributed significantly to the win, lauded Markram as a 'big-match player'. He said, 'Aiden is a big-match player. The way he held his ground with such resolve was remarkable. His presence, the way he dominated his space, and stuck to his game plan without wavering was brilliant."
Rabada admired Markram's concentration. 'You still had to bat really well on that pitch — it wasn't one where you could afford to be loose. They set off-side and leg-side traps, but he navigated all of it throughout his innings."

Shubman Gill's Record-Breaking Century Leaves Virat Kohli Behind In WTC Stats, Trails Only Rohit Sharma
Shubman Gill scripted history on the first day of the opening Test against England at Headingley by smashing an unbeaten 127, becoming the newest entrant into an elite record list. With this innings, Gill registered his 6th century in the current World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 cycle, surpassing Virat Kohli's tally of five centuries in the ongoing championship. The 25-year-old not only stamped his authority with the bat but also made an emphatic statement in his first outing as India's Test captain, leading his side to 359/3 at stumps on Day 1. WTC 2023–25: Most Centuries by Indian Batters Rohit Sharma - 9 Centuries Shubman Gill 6 Centuries Virat Kohli 5 Centuries Yashasvi Jaiswal 5 Centuries Rishabh Pant 4 Centuries With this century, Gill now sits second among Indian players in this WTC cycle, trailing only Rohit Sharma, who leads with nine tons. Kohli, who has had a quiet phase in this cycle, now moves to third. Gill completes 2000 Test runs Gill also completed 2000 Test runs in the first Test. He required 107 runs to complete the record, and the cricketer eventually got it done. Captaincy Debut with a Statement Taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill showed no signs of pressure. His composed yet assertive knock featured flawless cover drives, disciplined shot selection, and mature strike rotation. His partnership with Rishabh Pant, who also scored a crucial fifty, was pivotal in setting up India's strong foundation in the match. This innings made Gill only the fifth Indian to score a century on Test captaincy debut, joining the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Virat Kohli, and Vijay Hazare. WTC Impact: A Run-Machine in the Making Gill's consistency across formats, particularly in Tests, is now being widely acknowledged. He has scored centuries in varied conditions, including India and now England, making him a reliable asset in India's WTC campaign. His sixth ton in just 26 WTC matches reflects an exceptional level of performance. With at least four more matches remaining in this cycle, Gill is well-positioned to challenge Rohit Sharma's record of nine WTC centuries and potentially set a new Indian benchmark.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul Shatter Historic Record In 1st Test vs England, Surpass Sunil Gavaskar-Kris Srikkanth
India's opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul stamped their authority at Headingley with a record-breaking stand, becoming the most successful Indian openers at the venue in Test cricket in the ongoing first Test of the five-match series on Friday. The stylish left-right combination put together 91 runs for the first wicket, surpassing the 64-run mark set by legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth back in 1986 — a record that stood unchallenged for 39 years. After England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first under overcast skies, Jaiswal and Rahul faced a disciplined new-ball attack led by Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. The Indian openers started cautiously, showing sound judgment outside off and immense patience. As the session wore on, both batters found fluency—Rahul unfurling elegant drives through cover, and Jaiswal playing with a mix of controlled aggression and solid technique. Their partnership of 91 runs was a masterclass in shot selection and temperament, with the pair collecting 16 boundaries, all via classical strokes through the offside. Despite a few testing deliveries—most notably a nasty ribcage blow to Jaiswal from Carse—the duo looked in complete control. For a while, England appeared bereft of ideas, even burning a DRS review on a delivery that pitched comfortably outside leg stump. Just as it seemed India would head to lunch with all ten wickets intact, England roared back in the final six balls of the session to peg the visitors back. Brydon Carse provided the much-needed breakthrough with a wide outswinger that KL Rahul edged to Joe Root at first slip for a composed 42. Then, on debut, Sai Sudharsan lasted just four balls before falling to a leg-side strangle off Ben Stokes—caught behind by Jamie Smith for a duck. Those two quick wickets brought life back into a contest that was rapidly tilting India's way. Despite the wobble, Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 44 at lunch, continuing to look assured after his stellar showing in the previous India-England series w, where he tallied over 700 runs.
