Somaiya Vidyavihar University Hosts Global Conference on Technologies for Energy, Agriculture & Healthcare (ICTEAH 2025) at the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus

Somaiya Vidyavihar University, built on the proud 84-year legacy of the Somaiya Trust, successfully hosted the 2nd International Conference on Technologies for Energy, Agriculture, and Healthcare (ICTEAH-2025). Organised by the K J Somaiya School of Engineering, the conference brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore transformative technologies shaping our collective future. The conference was inaugurated in the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Sanjay Jambhulkar (Senior Scientist, BARC), Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai (Vice Chancellor, SVU and former Chairman, UGC), Dr. Suresh Ukarande (Director & Dean, K J Somaiya School of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University), Dr. Nandkumar Gilke (Registrar, SVU), and Dr. Shailesh Nikam (Organising Secretary and Professor).

'A new domain of epidemics is emerging from environmental risk factors. Climate change, even a rise of just 0.5 to 1 degree in temperature, is impacting 12% of the population by exacerbating heat-related diseases. Additionally, exposure to various artificial environmental agents poses significant health risks. This has led to the rise of exposomics, a new discipline focused on understanding the health effects of environmental exposures. Given these challenges, healthcare remains a critical focus area worldwide,' said Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
With over 120 delegates, the conference featured 93 paper presentations and 7 posters, creating a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange in clean energy, precision agriculture, and digital healthcare. Selected papers will be published by Taylor & Francis with individual DOIs and will be submitted for Scopus indexing, significantly contributing to the global body of academic research.
The highlights of the conference were dignitaries from various fields. Dr. Sanjay Jambhulkar (Senior Scientist, BARC) spoke about the use of new technologies in agriculture and food security, emphasising their critical role in building sustainable food systems. Dr. Sudhir Ranjan Jain (Somaiya Vidyavihar University) presented insights into quantum computation for energy, highlighting its potential to revolutionise energy systems and contribute to sustainability. Dr. Nandkumar Kunchge (Director, K J Somaiya Institute of Applied Agricultural Research, Sameerwadi) presented regenerative agriculture methods which are hoping to take agriculture back to its deep connection with Mother Nature. Dr. S. D. Sharma (Founder Auflows CardioTech Pvt. Ltd. and Retired Professor from IIT Bombay) presented palliative surgical procedures required for congenital heart disease patients having Univentricular hearts to help their pulmonary circulation.
'Energy, agriculture, and healthcare are the three critical pillars of our future. With rising population and urbanisation, the demand for renewable energy (i.e. solar, wind, tidal, and hydrogen) is only going to increase. Research in these areas is not just ongoing, it's essential. Tomorrow's breakthroughs may come from innovations and research e.g 2cm x 2cm solar panel generating the same power as today's larger systems (2m x 2m). This is where scientists, academicians, and industry leaders must come together to solve real-world challenges,' said Dr. Suresh Ukarande, Director & Dean, K J Somaiya School of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
In recognition of outstanding contributions, Best Paper Award from each domain were presented to Dr. Sarika Bukkawar, Mr. Haseen Shaikh, Ms. Sonia Pol and Mr. Nitish Yadav. Further, the best poster award was given to Ms. Alka Dattatray Gadakh. Certificates of Excellence acknowledged the commitment and performance of participants and student volunteers throughout the conference.
The conference reaffirmed Somaiya Vidyavihar University's mission to bridge academic research with real-world impact. Through initiatives like ICTEAH, the University continues to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, fostering innovation that serves both industry and society.

‘Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign' launched in Karnataka's Dharwad

The Dharwad district administration in Karnataka has launched the 'Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign – 2025', in order to prevent life-threatening dehydration caused by diarrhoea in children below the age of five years. The campaign will run untill July 31, 2025, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said during its launch at the District Hospital in Dharwad. The campaign will be held in all health centres, sub-centres, and hospitals of the district. ASHA and other health workers will also be conducting awareness programmes in schools and Anganwadi centres. The DC stated that diarrhoea can lead to dangerous levels of dehydration in children, which can be fatal. She emphasised that this can be prevented by administering the correct dosage of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and Zinc tablets. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of child fatalities due to severe diarrhoea to zero. 'When a child suffers from diarrhoea, ORS and Zinc should be administered promptly to avoid dehydration. Parents are encouraged to visit the nearest health centre to avail free treatment,'' she said. Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said that mothers should take special care of children suffering from diarrhoea, and urged them not to stop breastfeeding during that time, as doing so may increase the risk of dehydration. District Health and Family Welfare Officer S.M. Honakeri informed that there are 2,07,837 children below the age of five in the district. The campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent diarrhoea among these children. He said that this can be achieved through maintaining cleanliness, washing hands properly, and ensuring hygiene during food preparation. District Surgeon Sangappa Gabi emphasised that parents should bring their children to the hospital promptly so that they can receive appropriate treatment and avoid life-threatening situations. Resource persons T.A. Shepur, Dr. Varsha, and Dr. Megha delivered lectures on diarrhoea prevention, dangerous symptoms, and the precautions mothers must take to avoid dehydration in children. District RCH Officer Sujata Hasavimath and others were present, according to a release.

North Andhra districts gear up for the International Yoga Day

North Andhra districts — Vizianagaram/Parvatipuram/Srikakulam — are expected to play key role in the culmination day of Yogandhra with mobilization of more than one lakh people out of 3.3 lakh persons who would perform yoga on June 21, International Yoga Day celebrations being organized from Ramakrishna Beach to Bheemunipatnam Beach of Visakhapatnam. Special Chief Secretary Health, Medical and Family Welfare and Yogandhra-2025 State Coordinator M.T Krishna directed the senior officials of North Andhra districts to strive hard to make the event as a grand success. According to him, the event would be a memorable one as all of them would practice yoga in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naidu all along the 26 km long beach road. Mr. Krishna Babu felt that Healthy Andhra Pradesh would be a reality when people would practice yoga which would make them fit and protect them from many diseases. The government is also making arrangements for yoga day celebrations in every nook and corner of the State apart from the major event planned at RK Beach-Bhimili Beach. Around 2.39 crore people registered their names in Yogandhra portal and they would practice yoga in the selected places of their respective villages, mandals and district headquarters. Parvatipuram Collector A. Shyam Prasad told The Hindu that 5,45,937 persons will practice yoga in several places including remote tribal areas of Gumma Lakshmipuram, Kurupam and other areas. Vizianagaram Collector B. R. Ambedkar and Joint Collector Sedhu Madhavan said that as many as 660 buses had been arranged for the transport of people to Visakhapatnam. Mr. Sedhu Madhavan told The Hindu that as many as 9.63 lakh people will perform yoga in a professional manner in different places on June 21 as they were trained under professionals in the last one month. Srikakulam Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar said that yoga culture had spread very quickly with the collective efforts of the officials, members of various organizations. He said that 10,86,985 persons who registered their names would create a record on the international Yoga Day. Member of Art of Living Yarlagadda Geetha Srikanth said that many women would also take part in Yoga at RK Beach and several parts of Srikakulam districts with the increased awareness over the benefits of yoga. Ms. Geeta who caught the attention of the district administration with her yoga performance on water is keen to mobilize around 800 women from Visakhapatnam for the Big Day event at RK Beach of Visakhapatnam.
