Essendon salute as winless Melbourne sink into the mire
Essendon captain Zach Merrett has dominated in a 33-point thrashing of Melbourne that plunges the winless Demons further into the mire.
Skipper Merrett was best-afield with 38 disposals in the Bombers' 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57) win in Saturday night's Gather Round game at Adelaide Oval.
Merrett, Dylan Shiel (30 touches) and Jye Menzie, who kicked four goals, were instrumental in Essendon squaring their win-loss ledger at 2-2.
But Simon Goodwin's Demons sink to 0-5 and 17th spot, above only West Coast.
Melbourne produced a third-term rally before a crowd of 45,039. The oval's earlier game - Carlton's 71-point hammering of the Eagles - attracted 41,252 spectators.
But the damage had been done: the Demons were within six points early in the second term before Essendon kicked the next five goals for a 35-point lead in the third quarter.
Just when the Demons appeared down and out, they suddenly - and unexpectedly - turned the tide with four consecutive goals in a 15-minute burst.
Bailey Fritsch score twice and Kozzy Pickett added his second as Melbourne drew within 11 points.

The Demons were 10 down when busy Bomber Nic Martin goaled in the 32nd minute, giving his side a 16-point cushion at three quarter-time.
Essendon goalsneak Jade Gresham snapped a major early in the last term to further settle the Demons' fate.
Melbourne will lament their lacklustre start - they trailed by 12 points at quarter-time and then allowed Essendon to produce a telling quarter-hour.
The Bombers scored four consecutive goals in a batch bookended by the influential Menzie, whose third goal created a 30-point break.
At that stage Melbourne, renowned in recent years for a misfiring forward line, led the inside 50 count 25-22 but had scored just 2.4.
Essendon's 7.4 to 2.5 halftime lead was soon increased by an Archie Perkins strike and Brad Scott's team appeared safe at 35 points up.
The Demons slotted four goals in their unheralded 15 minutes, but their best period was too brief to overpower the Bombers.
Melbourne's vaunted on-ball brigade had its collective colours lowered, with Merrett, Shiel, Ben Hobbs (20, two goals), Andrew McGrath (26 possessions) and Nic Martin (28, one goal) all shining.
Demons winger Ed Langdon was a standout with 25 touches and a goal while big guns Pickett (23, two goals), Christian Petracca (27,possessions) and Clayton Oliver (24 possessions) all had impact.

'Gutted': Eagles great McGovern medically retires
A "gutted" Jeremy McGovern will leave the AFL as a West Coast great after being forced into premature retirement through concussion. McGovern announced his 197-game career was over on Friday, with the decision made for the key defender by the AFL's concussion panel. The 2018 premiership player suffered a head knock in the Eagles' round-eight fixture against Melbourne and was referred to the panel after failing to recover following the mandatory 12-day period. Lauded as the intercept king, the 33-year-old etched himself into West Coast history with his famous mark in their 2018 grand final win. Overcoming internal bleeding in the lead-up to the eventual five-point victory, McGovern's quality shone through when he ditched his man - Collingwood star Jordan De Goey - to intercept Adam Treloar's kick inside-50. The move kickstarted the chain that ended in Dom Sheed's match-winning goal. He finished that season with 77 intercept marks, the most in 2018. "It's been an absolute honour to pull on the West Coast jumper for the past 15 years and it's something that I will forever be grateful for," McGovern said in a club statement. He ends his career as the club's reigning John Worsfold medallist and as a five-time All-Australian, having collected another blazer in 2024. "To the club, I can't explain how much you have given me over my time here, and I can't thank you enough for drafting a fat kid from Albany and giving him a crack," McGovern said. "I've always loved the game and winning a premiership is every kid's dream, but the lifelong friendships and relationships you build through footy mean more to me than anything. "I will forever be indebted to West Coast, and I will always bleed blue and gold." McGovern's exit follows that of former West Coast teammate Luke Edwards, who stepped away from the game last October to focus on his recovery from multiple concussions. Collingwood duo Nathan Murphy and Josh Carmichael, Melbourne premiership player Angus Brayshaw and Western Bulldogs draftee Aiden O'Driscoll also had their careers cut short in 2024 because of concussion.

'Quite confident': Blues handed Origin boost after surprise news about Souths forward
Keaon Koloamatangi's hopes of earning a State of Origin recall for the Blues have been given a massive boost after he was named to return from injury in South Sydney's round 16 blockbuster against Melbourne on Saturday night. Koloamatangi fractured his eye socket in last week's loss to Canterbury and was expected to miss the Storm clash, despite being named in Wayne Bennett's extended squad. But the veteran coach confirmed on Friday that the Rabbitohs wrecking ball did not require surgery and would be elevated into Souths' 17-man squad for the home game at Accor Stadium. The news will come as a huge relief to the Bunnies, who will also welcome back Latrell Mitchell, with the star fullback set to back up from the Blues' two-point loss in Origin Game 2. Koloamatangi has been in destructive form since moving to play in the middle this season and Bennett hailed the forward's toughness after revealing he'd been given the green light to play Melbourne this weekend. "(Koloamatangi) didn't need any surgery and the doctor's quite confident (the injury) won't be a problem to him. He's confident and he's happy so we'll go ahead and let him play," Bennett told reporters. "He's a bit like Jye Gray the other night with a broken thumb, played the whole second half. You can't question the toughness and the wanting to play for the club as well. The club's in a good place if players want to play and they've got injuries or getting back a little bit earlier. They work really hard." Koloamatangi was named in the Blues' extended squad for Origin Game 2 but missed the trip to Perth after picking up the game-ending injury in the six-point loss to the Dogs. Stefano Utoikamanu seems the NSW player most under threat of being replaced by the likes of Koloamatangi or Wests Tigers star Terrell May after an underwhelming display off the bench in Perth. The Blues interchange forward only had four runs for 41 metres and gave away a costly penalty for obstruction that saw a try to Blues teammate Nathan Cleary correctly chalked off. And Saturday's clash against Utoikamanu's Storm could be a straight shoot-out between the Blues hopefuls. Koloamatangi's blistering form for the Rabbitohs has led to growing calls for Daley to hand him an Origin recall after impressing in his one and only game for the Blues in the 2023 decider. And his inclusion for the Storm clash means he'll have two games to press his Origin claims, with Souths taking on the Dolphins in round 17 the following week.
