Sharjah City Municipality warns against circulating, displaying or selling Zamzam water

Gulf Today03-06-2025

Sharjah City Municipality announced a ban on the sale and circulation of Zamzam water in commercial establishments operating in Sharjah, adding that it would intensify its inspection campaign of these establishments to ensure their compliance with its decision.
The municipality's move is aimed at curbing commercial fraud and public deception schemes and tampering with products in line with its goal of making public health a priority and providing safe and healthy food to the public in accordance with applicable health requirements and standards.
Khalid Al Hammadi, Head of Food Control Section, said the municipality was closely monitoring markets and conducting regular and surprise inspection campaigns to detect any food products that did not meet health requirements and standards and curb fraud or public deception, especially in such products as Zamzam water, which was hard to be distinguished from other waters.
Therefore, the municipality is constantly updating requirements and permits in line with its objectives and strategy for regulating the work of commercial and food establishments, he added.
Al Hammadi explained that the municipality began forwarding circulars to commercial establishments prohibiting the sale, circulation and display of Zamzam water, especially after inspection teams succeeded in arresting a person who had been using deception and commercial fraud to win illicit gain.
The suspect used to fill water from the tanks of his house into plastic bottles with labels indicating that they contained Zamzam water and to sell and promote it on social media platforms, selling large quantities of it for large sums of money, he said.
Al Hammadi pointed out that the municipality was hereby urging the public to co-operate with it by refraining from buying Zamzam water from local markets and reporting any violations to the call center at 993.
The municipality was also calling on the public not to deal with any unlicenced food establishments and not to buy any products through social media unless they had verified their source and made sure that such products had been licensed by the competent authorities in the emirate, he added.

SSSD & Sharjah Municipality discuss electronic linkage system

The visit aimed to discuss ways of cooperation in electronic linkage and the exchange of data related to property ownership for beneficiaries of the department's services, particularly after the owner's death. This will contribute to achieving fairness and accuracy in assistance disbursement. The delegation was headed by Ms. Alia Al Zaabi, Director of the Social Assistance Department, and included Ms. Fatima Al Zarouni, Head of the Periodic Research Department, and Mr. Rashid Al Ketbi from the Information Technology Department. They were received by Mr. Faisal Al Mansouri, Head of the Rental Contracts Review Department, and Mr. Abdullah Al Shehail, Director of Rental Regulation at Sharjah City Municipality. Integrating databases During the meeting, several vital topics were discussed, most notably the importance of integrating databases between the two entities. This will enable SSSD to access accurate and up-to-date information on the properties owned by beneficiaries and verify their real estate returns when considering eligibility for assistance, especially after the owner's death, as the Emirates ID is revoked and direct access to property data is difficult. The department explained that this step comes in response to an urgent need in the social sector, as the lack of information after the owner's death leads to gaps in the assessment of eligible cases, which may result in inaccurate assistance disbursement. Thanks to the advanced electronic system adopted by Sharjah Municipality, it has become possible to link information to the property or plot number, allowing for continuous and automated tracking of any changes or updates to properties. Digital transformation The Social Assistance Department praised the advanced role played by Sharjah City Municipality in digital transformation and updating its electronic systems to enhance the quality of services provided to the community, stressing that this type of cooperation represents an exemplary model of government integration among local departments in the emirate. For its part, Sharjah Municipality welcomed this cooperation and expressed its willingness to support the department's efforts in developing social work mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of exchanging information to achieve efficiency and transparency in the provision of services to the local community. Realising social justice It is worth noting that SSSD seeks, through such partnerships, to build a smart system for social assistance. It is based on actual data and contributes to improving the quality of life for beneficiaries, in line with the Sharjah government's efforts to achieve social justice and sustainable development.

UAE Strengthens Global Leadership in Peaceful Nuclear Energy Development

The UAE is solidifying its position as a global leader in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, setting an international benchmark through strategic partnerships, regulatory transparency, and a commitment to clean energy innovation. As the world accelerates its shift toward climate neutrality, the UAE's nuclear programme—led by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR)—has emerged as a model for how nations can integrate nuclear power safely and effectively into a sustainable energy mix. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, said the programme's success lies in the UAE's clear roadmap, visionary leadership, and deep-rooted international cooperation. Major collaborations with the Republic of Korea and the United States have driven the construction of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant and opened doors for global ventures, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). At COP28, the UAE played a pivotal role in rallying more than 30 countries behind a pledge to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. Nearly 120 companies and financial institutions have committed to supporting this goal, underscoring nuclear energy's role in the future energy landscape. The UAE's partnerships extend across the globe—from cooperation agreements with Romania and regulatory collaboration with Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to research and development efforts with US institutions such as Idaho National Laboratory, TerraPower, and General Atomics. Domestically, nuclear energy is also being aligned with next-generation technologies. Al Hammadi highlighted its role in powering projects like 'Stargate UAE,' which aims to position Abu Dhabi at the forefront of the global AI revolution. Through robust international cooperation and a steadfast focus on innovation, the UAE is not only meeting its own energy goals but also shaping the global dialogue on the future of nuclear energy. UAE's nuclear programme a role model in terms of safety

The UAE continues to cement its status as a global role model in developing a peaceful nuclear energy programme that adheres to the highest standards of safety, transparency, and international cooperation. This comes at a time when the world is increasingly turning to reliable energy sources that can support the transition to climate neutrality. From the outset, the UAE adopted a collaborative and open approach, forging robust international partnerships, most notably with the Republic of Korea and the United States, to drive forward its nuclear ambitions. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), highlighted the international stature of the UAE's peaceful nuclear energy programme. Al Hammadi noted that this achievement is rooted in the visionary leadership of the UAE, a clearly defined roadmap, and a firm commitment to the highest standards of safety and transparency, underpinned by strong international cooperation. In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Hammadi added that the UAE has been a pioneer in international cooperation and coordination within the nuclear energy sector. He pointed to the country's significant efforts in this vital field, which culminated during the COP28 with over 30 nations pledging to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050 as part of the drive toward climate neutrality. Additionally, nearly 120 companies and banks worldwide committed to supporting this ambitious goal. He also highlighted the innovative model of international cooperation between the UAE and the US, which addresses the demands of the modern era and its rapid technological advancements, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and data centres. Barakah staff. Al Hammadi emphasised that securing clean and reliable energy sources, such as nuclear power, is essential to support initiatives like the ''Stargate UAE'' project. Launched by a consortium of tech companies, the initiative aims to position Abu Dhabi at the forefront of the global AI revolution. For their part, key UAE entities, led by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), play a central role in advancing the UAE's nuclear programme. Through a robust network of strategic and technical international partnerships, these institutions have facilitated knowledge transfer, experience exchange, and the development of specialised human capital. Cooperation with the Republic of Korea has served as the cornerstone for the successful development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. Over time, this partnership has expanded to include new investment opportunities in international ventures, including the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). On the regulatory front, the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) maintains agreements with its Korean counterpart covering joint inspections and capacity building. These ties are further strengthened through regular meetings to monitor technological advancements and regulatory developments. With the United States, the UAE has signed a series of strategic agreements aimed at advancing nuclear innovation and sustainability. These include a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to develop solutions for producing hydrogen, water, and steam at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The UAE has also partnered with TerraPower to support the development of advanced reactors, and signed an MoU with General Atomics (GA), a leading US advanced technology solutions company, to collaborate on using advanced technologies and materials for nuclear energy supply. Most recently, a partnership was announced with GE Vernova to jointly evaluate the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology internationally. As part of its efforts to expand its network of strategic partnerships, the UAE is actively exploring avenues of cooperation with China in the development and operation of nuclear power plants, both domestically and in third countries. Areas of collaboration include the operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities, the development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, nuclear fuel supply chains, and investment opportunities. In parallel, FANR has strengthened its ties with counterpart agencies through agreements that enhance cooperation in nuclear safety, security, non-proliferation, and capacity building, further reinforcing the UAE's commitment to global nuclear governance. In a move that underscores the expanding international footprint of the UAE's nuclear programme, ENEC has signed a cooperation agreement with Romania. As part of the agreement, the UAE will support the development of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project in Romania, backed by an investment of $275 million. The UAE continues to affirm its leadership as a regional model for countries pursuing nuclear energy as a strategic option. WAM
