Gateway Subs opens sixth Tampa location in Ellenton
ELLENTON, Fla. (BLOOM) – A group of college friends-turned-entrepreneurs is taking over the Tampa Bay sandwich scene, one hoagie at a time. Gateway Subs, a fast-growing sub shop founded in 2021, is opening its sixth location this June in Ellenton, just steps from the outlet mall.

Founded by Grant Strayer, Morgan Zook, Brandon Ruditz, and Henry Love, Gateway Subs has become a local staple known for its house-made ingredients, efficient service, and youthful energy. The newest store, located at 2215 60th Ave E, is expected to open by the second week of June. The team is currently converting a former Subway and will take over the space on June 1.

After graduating during the pandemic, the four founders turned a turbulent job market into an opportunity. Inspired by iconic sub shops from their Boca Raton hometowns and college town favorites, the group built Gateway Subs with a mission: expand fast, but never cut corners.
Their flagship St. Petersburg store quickly built a loyal following, and the brand has since become a go-to for hot subs, scratch-made cookies, and creative monthly specials.
Grant Strayer, the company's CEO and expansion strategist, leads big-picture growth and financial planning. With a background in finance from Indiana University, he's focused on taking Gateway from regional favorite to national contender.
Morgan Zook, known for his viral videos and community collaborations, heads up marketing and brand building. He also oversees Gateway's expanding catering division, which serves everyone from the Tampa Bay Rays to local fire departments.
Brandon Ruditz, a former Division 1 lacrosse player and Federal Reserve staffer, runs day-to-day operations and backend systems to ensure consistency and quality across stores.
Henry Love, the first of the group with restaurant management experience, helped open the first Gateway before returning to Indiana to manage his family's restaurant and launch new food concepts.
The Ellenton location will be managed by Peter Charles, a 24-year-old with experience at Jersey Mike's and Chick-fil-A. He relocated to St. Pete in January to train for what's expected to be Gateway's busiest store yet.
The rest of the Gateway leadership includes:
Michael Boswell, Director of Operations & Production – a former chef who bakes all desserts and helps lead staff training.
Ian 'Shep' Sheppard, 4th Street Manager – the longest-tenured team member, known for his customer service.
Mark Blohm, Tampa Manager & Design Director – responsible for Gateway's visual branding and marketing campaigns.
Kevin Bell, Kenwood Manager – respected for his culinary creativity.
Savannah Nifong, South Pasadena Manager – one of Gateway's youngest leaders, already managing her own store at 21.
One of Gateway's fan favorites, 'The Brycer,' will be featured at the new store. It's stacked with buffalo chicken salad (baked in-house), sweet and hot peppers, and crushed jalapeño chips, served on fresh hoagie bread.
With plans to expand into other Florida cities and long-term ambitions to reach markets like Indiana and Texas, Gateway Subs is betting on its winning formula of house-made ingredients, community connection, and a team-first culture.

McDonald's to suffer massive boycott from customers
Over the past year, McDonald's (MCD) has struggled to resonate with consumers after facing backlash for dramatically hiking its menu prices during inflation. To add fuel to the fire, it also suffered a temporary E. coli outbreak in a few of its restaurant locations in October, further scaring away customers. Amid these challenges, McDonald's sales have declined over the past few financial quarters, despite its efforts to win back customers with menu changes and deals, and the trend continued during the first few months of this year. During an earnings call on May 1, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said that the "impact of inflation and heightened anxiety about the economic outlook" impacted sales during the quarter. "We entered 2025 knowing that it would be a challenging time for the QSR industry due to macroeconomic uncertainty and pressures weighing on the consumer," said Kempczinski. "During the first quarter, geopolitical tensions added to the economic uncertainty and dampened consumer sentiment more than we expected." As McDonald's struggles to attract customers to its restaurants, it has another major problem on its hands that threatens to impact sales. Between June 24 and June 30, the fast-food chain will face a major boycott from customers, which The People's Union USA is organizing. The group previously organized boycotts of Amazon, Walmart, and Target earlier this year. In a recent Instagram post, The People's Union USA founder John Schwarz said that the group is calling for a boycott of McDonald's for five reasons. First, he alleges the fast-food chain pays "less in taxes than the people serving their food." "McDonald's benefits from loopholes and offshore tax havens, allowing them to pay a fraction of what they should," he wrote in the post. "Meanwhile, their minimum wage employees pay more in effective taxes than the billion-dollar corporation they work for." Third, Schwarz claims McDonald's "has a long history of anti-union tactics, silencing employees, and avoiding accountability." "They use franchise loopholes to dodge direct responsibility while lobbying against higher wages and benefits," wrote Schwarz. Fourth, he alleges that McDonald's exploits "global supply chains and environmental loopholes" as its supply chain is connected to "deforestation, poor labor conditions, and unsustainable agricultural practices." Fifth, he said McDonald's likes to "perform DEI for the cameras but fund the opposite." "While McDonald's runs DEI-focused ads, their political donations and lobbying often support candidates and legislation that undermine equity, labor rights, and marginalized communities," he wrote. The People's Union USA has been organizing "economic blackouts" of large corporations since February. So far, it has organized specific weeklong boycotts aimed at Amazon, Walmart, General Mills, and Target. Starbucks, Home Depot, and Lowe's are next on its list. According to the group's website, it aims to "expose corruption and exploitation" and "hold corporations accountable" through these boycotts. Katie Sturino is not a black swimsuit type of gal. As she wandered the racks at Bergdorf Goodman on a Thursday afternoon in late May, she wore a floral silk muumuu and a striped sweater, a bright green Hermès bag with candy-colored purse charms slung across her arm. She grabbed a stack of bathing suits — patterns, colors, a baby blue tweed bikini with buttons at the waist — and asked a sales associate hovering nearby if she could please grab them in the largest size the store has. The associate eventually returned without the requested models, instead proffering up a scant handful of shirred, red one-piece options, adding, unasked, that they came in navy and black, too. They were too small, but Ms. Sturino politely tried one on anyway. It fit, if fitting means technically being able to pull a garment over one's body. Ms. Sturino was unfazed, taking out her phone to snap a mirror selfie of the pair of us in matching vermilion Lycra.
