Me and My Travels: Rory O'Connell on his holiday memories

Favourite childhood holiday memory We lived in Galmoy in the Midlands, so a trip to the seaside was a big deal. Tramore in County Waterford was the spot. I remember the big beach, the salty water, the waves, and always an elaborate picnic. We used to swim in our local river too, that was when you could. We had a secret field we called our own, where we'd stop for river picnics on the way home. There was a shop in Kilkenny that sold tiny shortbread biscuits with piped icing. My mother always bought us some as a treat on the way. It was a distinct and happy memory. Everything about those times was very innocent and uncomplicated — but really lovely. Most memorable trip Elephants bathing, Addo Elephant Park, South Africa. One of my first safaris to South Africa has to be it. I was completely blown away by the animals, the bush, the people, and just the peace. On one early morning drive, before sunrise, I experienced a level of stillness I've never known anywhere else. It was extraordinary. And then in complete contrast, we were charged by an elephant, the jeep had to reverse at high speed to get out of its path. And then, that stillness in the morning, the feeling that the world was just waking up around you, made a lasting impression. I'd never felt anything like it before. Most surprising destination Old American classic cars on the streets of Havana, Cuba Havana, Cuba. It was like a wedding cake melting in the heat; all these crumbling baroque buildings with people still living inside. The street life was so vibrant. Music was everywhere, the people were incredibly warm. But the real surprise was the opera and ballet. They were world class, yet incredibly inexpensive. Everyone went — babies in arms, grandparents, entire families. I remember standing in the bar area during an interval and looking up to see that there was no ceiling. You could see the stars above. That contrast of glamour and decay, of culture in unexpected places was unforgettable. Favourite city Floating market, Bangkok Bangkok. It's madly busy and full of contrasts. Towering skyscrapers beside single-storey homes, incredible temples, monks chanting in saffron robes, and vibrant river markets. It's built around the river, which adds another layer to the experience. The street food is phenomenal, the gardens are lush, and the people are warm and welcoming. I love being in a place where nothing is familiar, where you don't understand the language and have to figure things out. That sense of engagement, of immersion — it's completely exhilarating. Favourite hotel L'hotel, Marrakech. L'Hotel in Marrakesh is my favourite. It's owned by fashion designer Jasper Conran and tucked away in one of the old riads. It's very unassuming from the outside, but stepping inside is like entering a dream: calm, green, cool, with water trickling and beautiful scents in the air. The décor blends Moroccan and European style perfectly, and everything is so carefully thought through, yet completely relaxed. The food is made daily by Moroccan cooks using produce from the market. It feels incredibly special but in a very unpretentious way. It's a place to savour. Most memorable food experience One of the most perfect meals of my life was a breakfast in Morocco. The orange juice, freshly squeezed and cold, like I'd never tasted before. The meal itself wasn't fancy. But everything was done simply, and it was all perfect. The kind of breakfast that ruins all others, because it was so right in its own way. Favourite thing to do while travelling I love a good craft market and a great food market. That's where you see what the locals are up to — the baskets, weaving, ceramics, and produce. It's where I like to spend my time. I want to support the people doing the work. I want to find things made in that country if I'm travelling. I don't want something made in China unless I'm in China. The authentic version of wherever I am, that's what I'm looking for. My bucket list trip Punakha Dzong in Bhutan. Bhutan is at the top of the list. I've heard such incredible things about the landscape, the culture, the sense of peace. It fascinates me. But I'd also love to explore Eastern Europe. I haven't been beyond Vienna, so Romania and the Balkans are high on my list. The architecture, the countryside, the way people preserve food and live through the seasons. It all feels very connected to nature, to time and place. I'd love to experience it.

Ireland is the second safest country in the world, new global survey claims

'Each of the top ten most peaceful countries are also some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world' The UK has risen two places to take the number 30 spot Ireland is the second safest country in the world, according to a new Global Peace Index study. While there are a record 59 active state-based conflicts currently raging across the globe - the most since the end of WWII – Ireland is second only to Iceland at the top of the safe list. According to the Global Peace Index, created by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), the world is facing a 'reshaping of the global order'. One hundred countries have become less peaceful than they were a decade ago, but Ireland has retained its coveted second place slot that it held last year. Iceland, which has once again claimed the most safe title, which it has held since 2008, tops the poll while New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland join Ireland in the top five. All top five countries rank highly because they have resilient institutions, low corruption, and well-functioning infrastructure. These are referred to as positive peace indicators, making them ideal destinations for travel. Singapore comes next, with the rest of the top 10 made up of European countries including Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland. Beautiful Ireland News in 90 Seconds - June 19th The UK is a good bit further down the list as 30th most peaceful country in the world, although it has risen two places in the index since 2024. Perhaps unsurprisingly, both the USA and Russia fare badly with America falling to 128 out of 163 countries while the former Soviet Union is rated the world's least peaceful country with Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen all in the bottom five. Researchers for the index take into consideration both internal and external peace indicators. Internal incudes levels of violent crime and the number of murders and violent demonstrations, while external covers military expenditure, number of nuclear weapons and relations with neighbouring countries. Iceland tops the poll While Western and Central Europe is the most peaceful region in the world, 'Europe's security environment is undergoing a profound transformation'. This is because Russia's invasion of Ukraine and 'diminishing US strategic focus' on the region means European countries are diverting funds from education and healthcare towards military expenditure 'The Russian threat is real and no individual European country comes close to Russia's military capability,' researchers added. The Middle East and North African is the world's least peaceful, with 35 of 43 nations Sub-Saharan Africa engaged in conflict in the last five years. According to the IEP, Kashmir, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria are the regions that are at highest risk of entering a major war. The UK has risen two places to take the number 30 spot South America is the only region to improve on its peacefulness scores since last year's index. In 2020, Iceland was in first place, with New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark rounding out the top five. Canada, Singapore, the Czech Republic, Japan, and Switzerland were among the top ten that year. Researchers make the point that if people are preoccupied with fighting or concerned about their lives, they cannot create art, build homes, run businesses, or host visiting families. Steve Killelea, founder of the IEP, said: "We all want to relax when we're on holiday, and there is no better place to do so than in countries that are free of violence. This is one of the reasons why each of the top ten most peaceful countries are also some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world." Killelea adds: "This should show governments that peace comes with substantial economic benefits, as well as improving the health and well-being of their citizens. So, next time you consider where to go on holiday, why don't you vote with your feet by choosing a peaceful country?" '
