HASiL Ramps Up International Efforts To Tackle Tax Evasion
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- The Inland Revenue Board (HASiL) is stepping up its global cooperation to track down taxpayers who fail to comply, including those transferring assets or income overseas.
Its Intelligence and Profiling Department director Muhammad Azhari Tamrin @ Thamrin told Bernama Radio that the agency is harnessing international tools, such as the Exchange of Information (EOI) and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), to access financial data shared by foreign authorities.
'Tax evaders are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They shift profits offshore, set up offshore companies and use international bank accounts. These are tactics that conventional methods struggle to detect,' he said.
In response, HASiL has taken proactive steps by deepening partnerships with tax authorities abroad to share information and trace these financial footprints more effectively.
Speaking on the radio programme POV: Perspektif Bukan Persepsi, hosted by Kamal Affandi Hashim and focused on tax evasion, Muhammad Azhari explained that Malaysia's participation in the Forum on Tax Administration and the ASEAN network has helped it adopt best practices and strengthen its capacity through big data analytics and risk profiling.
Alongside enforcement efforts, HASiL has also rolled out public education campaigns and adopted a 'Compliance Before Enforcement' approach to encourage voluntary tax compliance.
Social media, he added, is an increasingly valuable resource in uncovering suspicious financial activity.
'We analyse lifestyles displayed online and compare them with declared incomes, looking out for undeclared businesses, hidden assets and social or business networks,' he noted.
Where discrepancies emerge, he said HASiL will conduct audits and investigations, actions that are targeted and data-driven rather than arbitrary.
Muhammad Azhari also urged the public to act as watchdogs, encouraging them to report individuals or companies that live beyond their declared means or operate without proper registration.

Man shot dead outside Klang bike shop, police probe ongoing
KLANG: The daily routine of the community in Taman Meru Utama came to a standstill when the peace was shattered by the sound of gunfire in front of a motorcycle shop that claimed the life of a local man yesterday (June 20). When contacted today, Vijaya Rao said police were investigating possible secret society elements in the case. He said several individuals had so far been called in to have their statements recorded. 'Preliminary investigations found that the victim, who was self-employed, was accompanying his friend who wanted to buy a second-hand motorcycle at the shop. 'He was believed to have been shot at close range, and a post-mortem is still ongoing,' he said, adding that the police were also reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Pernas Channels Over RM3.4 Mln In Financing To Franchise Entrepreneurs In Kelantan
KOTA BHARU, June 21 (Bernama) -- Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (Pernas) has, since last year, channelled more than RM3.4 million in financing to franchise entrepreneurs in Kelantan, including participants of the Business In Transformation (BIT) programme. Pernas chairman Datuk Mohamed Rozhan Mohd Ghazalli said the agency remained committed to guiding and empowering franchise entrepreneurs nationwide, in line with the mandate given to him to elevate Malaysia's franchise industry to the global stage. 'Pernas is tasked with spearheading the development of the franchise industry in Malaysia and empowering the local entrepreneurial community to become more competitive and sustainable. 'This commitment reflects Pernas' determination to empower franchise entrepreneurs from the grassroots up, enabling them to expand to both national and international levels,' he said. He said this in his speech at the launch of the BizFrancais Programme Tour Series held here today, which was also attended by Pernas chief executive officer Datuk Nor Azam M. Taib. Elaborating, Mohamed Rozhan said the Kelantan BizFrancais Programme 2025 brought together nearly 30 exhibitors, including government agencies, franchisors, pre-franchisors, and entrepreneurs under Pernas' Xcelerator and BIT programmes. 'The BizFrancais 2025 tour series kicks off in Kelantan and will continue in other states such as Sarawak, Sabah and Johor later this year.
