Player grades: Sixers battle, but fall short to Timberwolves at home
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday continuing to play out the string. The Sixers are currently battling for lottery positioning while the Timberwolves are battling to get out of the play-in and earn a guaranteed playoff spot in the unforgiving Western Conference.
The Sixers did their best to play spoiler on this night as they battled back from a double-digit deficit to take a lead in the third and fourth quarters. It was a terrific effort for Philadelphia when considering the circumstances, but the Wolves eventually earned a 114-109 win. Anthony Edwards had 37 points and was fantastic down the stretch for Minnesota.
The Sixers received 28 points from Quentin Grimes, 16 points and eight assists from Jared Butler while Lonnie Walker IV added 18 points and five assists off the bench. Guerschon Yabusele had 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals while Adem Bona pulled down 10 rebounds.
Here are the player grades following the loss:
Jared Butler: A-minus
Going up against a close friend in Mike Conley, Butler had some good moments. As always, he got the Sixers organized and got them into their sets on the offensive end and made some plays with his passing. He had a couple of nice moves to get into the paint with his own offense and he made some big buckets in the second half in order to get Philadelphia back into this one and eventually in front. He had an overall solid night against one of the better defenses he will face in the NBA.
Quentin Grimes: A-minus
It was a rare quiet night for Grimes. The Timberwolves are one of the top defensive teams in the league so it's always tough to score on them, and they paid a lot of attention to Grimes. Minnesota loaded up a lot against him and it limited Grimes' effectiveness which has been a tall task for many as of late. To his credit, he kept battling and eventually found a rhythm in the second half. He had a big stretch in the third and then drilled some tough triples in the fourth to keep the Sixers in the game.
Justin Edwards: Incomplete
It was a nice night for Edwards. The rookie is continuing to battle a bothersome left ankle issue while still dealing with the 'rookie wall' as he works his way through his maiden season in the NBA, but he played well against a tough Timberwolves team. He knocked down some tough shots offensively and had some good defensive moments. He was ruled out at halftime due to a rib contusion.
Adem Bona: C-minus
It was a foul-filled start for Bona. He picked up three in the first half alone and that limited both his time on the floor and his effectiveness when he did play as he didn't want to commit more fouls. Minnesota has some hulking, skilled big men so it used its advantage against him. He threw down a dunk in the second half to contribute offensively, but it was an overall tough night for him other than helping on the glass.
Guerschon Yabusele: A-minus
Yabusele was able to convert on his looks in the paint, but had his struggles from 3-point range. One has to believe that his right knee is continuing to bother him along with how many minutes he's played in the season. Either way, he had a fine night as he continues to be a constant for Philadelphia. A negative for Yabusele was the lack of size offered against Wolves big men Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, and Naz Reid on the defensive end. However, offensively, he was tough to guard as he has a quick first step and can get to the basket. Overall, a mixed bag for him, but he did enough on offense to be a big help.
Lonnie Walker IV: A
The night for Walker started with him knocking down a couple of early 3s which is a good sign for him as he moves forward. He has such a quick first step and is able to get to the basket with ease. If he can add a 3-point shot to his arsenal, then he is going to be tough to stop for most defenders. He did some good things for Philadelphia on the offensive end as he was able to keep the scoreboard moving for a team that was missing plenty of key pieces in this one.
Jalen Hood-Schifino: C-plus
It wasn't a great night for Hood-Schifino. He had his struggles shooting the ball and was unable to get into the paint in this one. A big part of his game is his ability to put the ball on the floor and use his size, but he had his overall struggles in this one. There is still a lot to like about his game, but he needs a bounce back.
Colin Castleton: C-plus
The initial stint for Castleton was productive. He was efficient around the basket, helped on the glass, and made some plays with his passing. He still has a lot of work to do on the defensive end, but he has a nice offensive game. If he could add a 3-point shot, it would go a long way to him sticking in the league.
Marcus Bagley: B-minus
Signed to a second 10-day deal, Bagley received some early minutes in this one. He has an understanding of how to play so he has a chance to stick. Combine his IQ with his athleticism and there could be a future for him. He had some nice defensive plays in this one and was in the right spots on the offensive end to make an impact.

Former Sixers guard Isaiah Joe wins a title as Thunder defeat Pacers

YOUR 2025 @NBA CHAMPIONS 🏆#ThunderUp There is a new champion in the NBA and it is the Oklahoma City Thunder after earning a ???-??? win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 on Sunday night and winning the first championship in Oklahoma City history. With the Pacers losing All-Star Tyrese Haliburton to a lower leg injury in the first quarter, Indiana didn't have enough in the second half to beat the loaded Thunder. OKC was led by MVP winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who had 29 points, 12 assists, and five rebounds, and fellow All-Star Jalen Williams added 20 points and four rebounds. Young big man Chet Holmgren blocked five shots in a dominant defensive effort. Isaiah Joe, a former member of the Philadelphia 76ers, will win his first title. A second-round pick of the Sixers in 2020, Joe didn't get time in Game 7, but he shot 41.1% from deep in 21 playoff games for Oklahoma City as he helped the Thunder get to this point. In terms of other former Sixers, TJ McConnell did his best to help the Pacers get to the top after the injury to Haliburton, but it wasn't enough. He still was impressive as he had 16 points off the bench and led Indiana's gutsy effort, but the Thunder were able to finish it off. The Sixers will now look to reload and get back after it in the 2025-26 season. With a healthy Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, they figure to be in the conversation to come out of the Eastern Conference.

Lakers fans shouldn't fret about Kevin Durant going to the Rockets

Every year, every offseason, there is a sizable number of Los Angeles Lakers fans who seem to essentially give up on the upcoming season, not so much because the Lakers may have an underwhelming roster, but because of the competition. Those fans will always utter the following words in some form: "The Western Conference is brutal." On Sunday, hours before the start of Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, the West seemed to get tougher. The Phoenix Suns agreed to trade future Hall of Fame forward Kevin Durant, and he's going to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in this year's draft and five second-round picks. It's hardly a big haul for Phoenix, and at first glance, one may feel the Rockets, who finished second in the West during the regular season, will now soar into the stratosphere. But a closer look at their roster reveals that they likely won't be as mighty as some may fear. They could very well be mostly a two-horse gang. Center Alperen Sengun has emerged as a star and averaged 19.1 points and 10.3 rebounds a game this season, but he may never become a huge scoring threat. Amen Thompson, a 22-year-old forward who was the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, is a fine player, but he may not ever evolve into a true star. Veteran point guard Fred VanVleet is a fine player and made the All-Star team three years ago. But he shot just 37.8% from the field this season and has made over 42% of his field-goal attempts for an entire season just once. In other words, the Rockets will be a good team, and perhaps a very good one. But it is not easy to imagine them being a true championship contender, at least not right now. Then there is the matter of how Durant's last two teams had even more talent than Houston will have next season but failed to even reach the conference finals. When he joined the Brooklyn Nets, they were supposed to become the NBA's next true "super team." But in two and a half seasons with him, they won a grand total of one playoff series. The Suns were supposed to become instant championship contenders when he joined them in February 2023. But they, too, have won just one playoff series since, and they didn't even make the playoffs this year. The new-look Rockets could very well become the latest Durant-led disappointment, and the Lakers should have a real chance of assembling a superior team this summer.

Surprise West Team Contacted Suns About Kevin Durant Trade: Report

Surprise West Team Contacted Suns About Kevin Durant Trade: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns have been a tough team to root for after they were swept out of the NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves two years ago. Many hoped that the team would improve from that performance but proved to go in the other direction in a hurry. They simply were a bad team on defense, evident by their No. 28 finish in terms of defensive efficiency. Advertisement Many speculated that the Suns were looking to trade Kevin Durant at the trade deadline last season, as their hopes for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament grew slimmer by the day. Whether it was Durant pleading with the Suns not to trade him to a particular team, or because the team wanted to make one last push, the team held onto him. But that changed on Sunday. The Phoenix Suns have made a decision about Jalen Green's Shea-Imagn Images Surprise West team contacted Suns about Kevin Durant On Sunday, the Suns traded Durant to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, and five second-round picks. The trade is likely the beginning of a rebuild for the Suns, while the Rockets hope this move will put them over the top in a loaded Western Conference. Advertisement However, according to Shams Charania, who broke the news of the trade, there was a surprise team that was in the mix for Durant: the Denver Nuggets. It remains unclear what a package from the Nuggets would've looked like to attempt to pair Durant with Nikola Jokic. It would likely have centered around Michael Porter Jr., while sending young talent like Peyton Watson and Julian Strawther, as Christian Braun would have been considered untouchable. It remains unclear as to what Phoenix's endgame is. As it sits, they currently have a logjam at the shooting guard position, so this is likely just the first of sizable moves the Suns make this offseason. It could prove to be a busy few days for the Suns if they make more moves ahead of the draft on Wednesday.
