The Bay Area's Hottest New Clubstaurant Is in This East Bay Strip Mall
Filipino restaurant Isla is a Bay Area favorite for dishes from the Pampangan region of the Philippines and across the archipelago. With locations in Newark and San Bruno, the restaurants regularly host large Filipino family gatherings, but the October 2024 flagship opening of Isla Grand Restaurant Bar & Banquet now brings live entertainment and a party atmosphere to the East Bay suburbs of Pleasant Hill.
Turn into the shared parking lot of Isla Grand and a neighboring Lamps Plus store on a Saturday night, and you'll most likely see cars circling and vying for space. Some drivers will resign themselves to park in an overflow lot at an adjacent strip mall, while families and couples mingle outside the restaurant, all waiting for a table. It's a busy scene, and the inside is even more buzzy, as customers take up space in two huge dining rooms. The main restaurant space is a typical one, with tables outfitted for parties of four or more, but walk past the host stand and you'll find that this is where the action is: This side is outfitted with a bar, a stage, dizzyingly rotating rainbow club lights, a makeshift dance space, and tables packed with parties of eight (or more) — this crowd comes to wild out. Here's the scene at Isla Grand on a Saturday evening in May.
The logistics: If you're looking to join the lively atmosphere, be smart or be prepared to wait. Rolling in to watch the live entertainment at 7 p.m. without a reservation means you'll wait. At this hour, the restaurant is packed to the gills, and the host quoted a two-hour seating time to get into the club, err, main room, and he meant it — glancing at a clipboard filled with names, there were plenty of others waiting to get in. The restaurant offers reservations the old-fashioned way, so be prepared to call in for a table ahead of time. You'll also most likely need to make reservations for groups over four, or to take part in their kamayan meal, also known as a boodle fight — a meal typically served over banana leaves and eaten by hand without utensils. And given that some of the restaurant's live entertainers hail from the Philippines (while others reside in the Bay Area), reserved seating can easily sell out depending on who's on the stage that day. Don't say you weren't warned.
The vibe: Did we mention this is a party? There's a reason for that: The room is filled with families, friend groups, birthday parties, and, since it is May, graduation parties. Tables accommodating parties of eight crowd the main area of the room as the aforementioned lights swirl and keep the atmosphere lively. On this night, the live band covered a parade of hits, including 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder and 'Hotel California' by the Eagles, and the crowd loved it, singing along at various parts.
During a break for the band, a DJ took over and kept the music thumping with '90s and '00s club hits like 'Yeah,' by Usher and 'Too Close,' by Next, and those songs proved powerful enough to move groups to start dancing at their tables and the dance floor in front of the stage area. The volume made ordering a challenge, but the food seemed to make its way to the tables just fine. Meanwhile, TVs spread across the room played an assortment of sports and cartoons (most likely for the kids in the room), as well as a TV dedicated to advertising the dishes of the restaurant itself, with customers giving 'Tasty-monials' (as the screen declared) of their meals.
The menu: The selection of dishes at Isla is massive, a spiral-bound menu almost on par with the Cheesecake Factory bible. Sisig is a Pampangan specialty and a customer favorite, and it's often seen sizzling away on a cast-iron platter as it makes its way to tables. If you've ever been to a Filipino family party in the Bay, the restaurant has those classics, too: pork barbecue skewers, lumpia Shanghai, lechon, pancit, and different styles of adobo. Dig deeper and you're likely to find lesser-seen Filipino dishes, such as Gotong Batangas, a soup with beef and offal, or Bicol Pinakbet, an assortment of vegetables such as calabasa squash and eggplant simmered in coconut milk. With a group of friends, it's an excuse to try a variety of dishes in a family-style setting, with a pot of steaming white rice ready to soak up the sauces and flavors.
As for drinks, the bar definitely skews toward club hits: A printed menu boasts Jägerbombs, Singapore Slings, and Long Islands, while the AMF very coolly sidesteps the awkwardness of ordering an Adios Motherfucker aloud, while still getting that sweet, electric blue multi-liquor drink into your hands. There are also wines and beers available, with the latter available in 88-ounce beer towers, which could be seen delivered to several tables throughout the night. Cue the Vengaboys.
The verdict: Depending on how you view clubstaurants, and whether a raucous Filipino family party is your thing, there is a certain charm to Isla Grand. It has the vibes of drinking with your barkadas, pop hits playing in the background, with good food in a restaurant setting. And while that may not be for everyone, for this crowd, it sounds, tastes, and feels like home.
Isla Grand Restaurant Bar & Banquet (548 Contra Costa Boulevard, Suite M, Pleasant Hill) is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Starring Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, the show's debut season, which premiered on February 27, 2025, left fans buzzing with its cliffhanger finale and star-studded ensemble. With Season 2 officially confirmed, here's everything we know so far about the Running Point Season 2. Running Point Season 2 Release Date Speculation Netflix announced the renewal of Running Point for a second season on March 6, 2025, just a week after its premiere, marking one of the streamer's fastest renewals for a freshman series. While an official release date hasn't been confirmed, production timelines for similar Netflix comedies suggest a potential premiere in early 2026, likely between February and April, assuming production is already underway. Running Point Season 2 Cast: Who's Returning? The core cast of Running Point is expected to return, bringing back the dysfunctional yet lovable Gordon family and their Los Angeles Waves basketball team. Confirmed cast members include: Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, the reformed party girl turned team president, who will continue navigating leadership challenges. Brenda Song as Ali Lee, Isla's best friend and Waves chief of staff, a fan-favorite for her sharp wit. Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon, Isla's younger half-brother and the team's CFO. Scott MacArthur as Ness Gordon, Isla's older brother and general manager. Justin Theroux as Cam Gordon, whose rivalry with Isla over the presidency is set to escalate. Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Moreno, a key team member. Scott Evans as Charlie, a vital part of the ensemble. Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield, a Waves player. Dane DiLiegro as Badrag, another key player. Uche Agada as Dyson, rounding out the team's roster. Running Point Season 2 Potential Plot Running Point Season 1 ended with major cliffhangers, setting the stage for a dramatic second season. Spoiler Warning for Season 1: The Los Angeles Waves made it to the playoffs but lost in game seven, leaving the team's future uncertain. Isla proved herself as president, but her brother Cam's scheming—spreading rumors to undermine her—sets up a fierce sibling rivalry. Coach Jay's impending move to Boston and his kiss with Isla add romantic tension, while Travis Bugg's rehab stint leaves his arc open-ended. Season 2 is expected to dive deeper into the Gordon family conflict, particularly the battle between Isla and Cam for control of the Waves. The show, loosely inspired by Lakers president Jeanie Buss (an executive producer), will likely continue blending real-world sports drama with comedy. The ending of '28 Years Later' explained and how it sets up the sequel, 'The Bone Temple'
Fans waited nearly 20 years for " 28 Years Later" — and its cliffhanger ending will likely leave them with more questions than answers. The film is set three decades on from when the Rage Virus escaped from a lab in Britain, causing the infected to become mindless and bloodthirsty zombie-like killers. It is essentially a coming of age story about a 12-year-old named Spike, who lives on an island that is cut off from the mainland during high tide, which protects his community from the infected. The opening scene of "28 Years Later" shows the infected attacking a young boy named Jimmy at the start of the outbreak. It then jumps forward to Spike's father, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), taking him hunting on the mainland as a rite of passage. They leave behind Spike's mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), who is bed-bound by a mystery illness that causes amnesia. Here's the ending explained, and how it sets up the sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple." "28 Years Later" follows Spike as he tries to save his mother. After Spike spots a fire in the distance while on the mainland, Jamie tells him of a man called Doctor Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), whom he saw nonchalantly burning hundreds of bodies when he was younger. He warns Spike of how dangerous even the uninfected can be. However, Spike ignores him and decides to sneak Isla onto the mainland in the hopes the doctor can cure her. He creates a distraction by burning a general store and leaving during low tide. On the mainland, Spike and Isla meet Eric (Edvin Ryding), a Swedish NATO soldier whose squad washed up in England after their boat sank. He saves them from a number of infected, but threatens to kill them when Isla helps a pregnant infected woman give birth to an uninfected baby. However, he's stopped by a variant of the infected called an Alpha, who rips Eric's head and spine off his body. As they escape, Kelson suddenly appears and drugs the Alpha (Chi Lewis-Parry) with a blowdart, and provides Spike, Isla, and the baby with sanctuary in an area where he has built huge towers out of bones and skulls. He calls it the "Memento Mori," Latin for "Remember you die." In one of the film's quieter moments, he diagnoses Isla with cancer, which has spread to her brain. This explains her memory loss and extreme headaches. She chooses to let Kelson euthanize her and she tells Spike that she'll always be with him. She walks off into the darkness with Kelson, and he returns with her skull. In a heartbreaking moment, he lets Spike pick a spot in the Memento Mori to place it, and he climbs to the top of the tower, positioning her skull so that she's forever looking out onto the world. After Isla's death, Spike embraces life on the mainland. The next morning, Spike treks back to the island and leaves the baby outside the gate with a note explaining that she isn't infected, and that he's named her Isla. In a moment of rage and grief, Jamie races out to the sea at high tide to try to find Spike, but he has already disappeared. Spike's decision to leave the safety of the isolated island to explore the mainland alone appears to symbolize that he's left his childhood behind. But a group of infected soon find him while he's cooking fish, and he flees his camping spot. In the film's most surprising moment, he's saved by a man in a bright purple tracksuit and gold jewelry who calls himself Jimmy (Jack O'Connell). Most importantly, he's the boy who survived the film's savage opening. Jimmy is joined by several other young people with long blond hair and matching, colorful tracksuits who kill the infected with large spears. Their appearance is a stark contrast to Spike and the other island survivors, who are haggard. The group's look is reminiscent of Jimmy Savile. The once hugely popular British television presenter who after his death in 2011 was revealed to be a prolific sexual abuser of children and adults. It's possible that in the universe of the horror franchise, Savile's crimes were never uncovered. Jimmy asks Spike if he'd like to go with him, and the film ends there. The scene sets the stage for the sequel, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which arrives in theaters on January 16, 2026.
