The ending of '28 Years Later' explained and how it sets up the sequel, 'The Bone Temple'
Fans waited nearly 20 years for " 28 Years Later" — and its cliffhanger ending will likely leave them with more questions than answers. The film is set three decades on from when the Rage Virus escaped from a lab in Britain, causing the infected to become mindless and bloodthirsty zombie-like killers. It is essentially a coming of age story about a 12-year-old named Spike, who lives on an island that is cut off from the mainland during high tide, which protects his community from the infected. The opening scene of "28 Years Later" shows the infected attacking a young boy named Jimmy at the start of the outbreak. It then jumps forward to Spike's father, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), taking him hunting on the mainland as a rite of passage. They leave behind Spike's mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), who is bed-bound by a mystery illness that causes amnesia. Here's the ending explained, and how it sets up the sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple." "28 Years Later" follows Spike as he tries to save his mother. After Spike spots a fire in the distance while on the mainland, Jamie tells him of a man called Doctor Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), whom he saw nonchalantly burning hundreds of bodies when he was younger. He warns Spike of how dangerous even the uninfected can be. However, Spike ignores him and decides to sneak Isla onto the mainland in the hopes the doctor can cure her. He creates a distraction by burning a general store and leaving during low tide. On the mainland, Spike and Isla meet Eric (Edvin Ryding), a Swedish NATO soldier whose squad washed up in England after their boat sank. He saves them from a number of infected, but threatens to kill them when Isla helps a pregnant infected woman give birth to an uninfected baby. However, he's stopped by a variant of the infected called an Alpha, who rips Eric's head and spine off his body. As they escape, Kelson suddenly appears and drugs the Alpha (Chi Lewis-Parry) with a blowdart, and provides Spike, Isla, and the baby with sanctuary in an area where he has built huge towers out of bones and skulls. He calls it the "Memento Mori," Latin for "Remember you die." In one of the film's quieter moments, he diagnoses Isla with cancer, which has spread to her brain. This explains her memory loss and extreme headaches. She chooses to let Kelson euthanize her and she tells Spike that she'll always be with him. She walks off into the darkness with Kelson, and he returns with her skull. In a heartbreaking moment, he lets Spike pick a spot in the Memento Mori to place it, and he climbs to the top of the tower, positioning her skull so that she's forever looking out onto the world. After Isla's death, Spike embraces life on the mainland. The next morning, Spike treks back to the island and leaves the baby outside the gate with a note explaining that she isn't infected, and that he's named her Isla. In a moment of rage and grief, Jamie races out to the sea at high tide to try to find Spike, but he has already disappeared. Spike's decision to leave the safety of the isolated island to explore the mainland alone appears to symbolize that he's left his childhood behind. But a group of infected soon find him while he's cooking fish, and he flees his camping spot. In the film's most surprising moment, he's saved by a man in a bright purple tracksuit and gold jewelry who calls himself Jimmy (Jack O'Connell). Most importantly, he's the boy who survived the film's savage opening. Jimmy is joined by several other young people with long blond hair and matching, colorful tracksuits who kill the infected with large spears. Their appearance is a stark contrast to Spike and the other island survivors, who are haggard. The group's look is reminiscent of Jimmy Savile. The once hugely popular British television presenter who after his death in 2011 was revealed to be a prolific sexual abuser of children and adults. It's possible that in the universe of the horror franchise, Savile's crimes were never uncovered. Jimmy asks Spike if he'd like to go with him, and the film ends there. The scene sets the stage for the sequel, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which arrives in theaters on January 16, 2026.

Jodie Comer on her character's agonising journey in unseen 28 Years Later clip
Sorry, this video isn't available yet. Jodie Comer has given insight into the struggles of her 'confined' 28 Years Later character in a new mini trailer with gruesome flashes of the film's Infected. The 32-year-old actress plays Isla, a mother who is trying to cope with an undiagnosed and debilitating illness during the unforgiving landscape of the highly anticipated sequel to classic 2002 British horror 28 Days Later. In a clip shared exclusively with Metro, Comer teases a little more about how Isla fits into the narrative, which is also set in the same post-apocalyptic world as 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, but is not a direct follow-up. 'Twenty-eight years ago, this infection infiltrated its way into these people's lives,' Comer explains on set, as we see graves and a wooden barricade on the beach while some Infected storm a house, attacking in a violent frenzy while their victims scream, with blood pouring from their eyes. 'My character Isla lives in a small community, but she's been confined to the walls of her home. 'Her son Spike makes the choice to take her off the island onto the mainland, which is the most dangerous place, to find help,' she adds. Isla is shown lying in bed, disoriented and knocking over a glass as Spike, played by newcomer Alfie Williams, asks: 'What's really wrong with her?' Throughout the promo clip there is also a terrifying glimpse at the pockmarked back of a stalking Infected – who now appear to crawl along the ground alongside their creepy, stilted run from the previous films. Glowing eyes lurk in the dark of a red, night-vision shot, while Ralph Fiennes as another survivor, Dr Kelson, is seen in a graveyard of bones with Spike and Isla, who in another flash is briefly seen holding a baby. However, Free Guy and The Bikeriders star Comer also insists that there's 'a real thread through it of humanity and emotion' as she and her onscreen son fiercely embrace in a fiery inferno. More Trending The latest clip still has more horrors in store though for fans thanks to a decomposing hand reaching out and the blistered and scarred yowling face of an Infected. 28 Years Later also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Alfie's father Jamie, as well as Jack O'Connell. Garland is back as the writer and Danny Boyle, who directed the first flick, returns to direct. (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed and cowrote the sequel.) Watch the trailer below. Garland recently told Business Insider that sequels have become less profitable through the years, and that the Marvel behemoth is partly to blame. "I think sequels are seen as diminishing returns," he said. "I don't wanna sort of throw shade as it were, but Marvel has something to do with this," the writer added. "It's not a criticism of Marvel, I just think people got oversaturated." Reviews for 28 Years Later are expected to be released on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, just two days before the movie hits theaters. Sony says the late embargo date is to keep spoilers at a minimum. 28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer as Isla, a pregnant woman; Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, a scavenger and Isla's husband; and Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, a knowledgable fellow survivor. The plot follows a group of people who've avoided zombie attacks for decades by living on an isolated island. When one member goes to the mainland, he discovers that the monsters — as well as the human survivors — have mutated. Neither of the first two films was recognized at the Oscars, though they did contend at other awards shows. The good news? Horror movies like 28 Years Later occasionally do receive Academy Award nominations, particularly in the craft categories, suggesting Oscar voters aren't too afraid of the genre. Mubi Earlier this year, The Substance (2024) received five overall bids: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Coralie Fargeat, Best Actress for Demi Moore, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling; it won the latter. Moore starred as an aging Hollywood star named Elisabeth Sparkle who, in an effort to stay relevant, injected herself with a substance that created a younger, sexier version of herself (Margaret Qualley). The Silence of the Lambs (1991) remains the only horror flick to win Best Picture at the Oscars. In addition, it took home top prizes for Anthony Hopkins in Best Actor for playing iconic cannibal Hannibal Lecter, and Jodie Foster in Best Actress as FBI cadet Clarice Starling. The landmark film also won Best Director for Jonathan Demme and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ted Tally, and earned bids in Best Film Editing and Best Sound. Another spooky movie that found success at the Academy Awards is The Exorcist (1973). Linda Blair was nominated in Best Supporting Actress for playing a girl possessed by the devil. Ellen Burstyn was a Best Actress nominee for playing her petrified mother, and Jason Miller, as a skeptical priest, was up for Best Supporting Actor. The film received 10 total noms, including Best Picture and Best Director for William Friedkin, and won Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay for William Peter Blatty. Other performers to win for frightening roles include Kathy Bates (Misery, 1990) as an obsessed fan, Natalie Portman (Black Swan, 2010) as a traumatic ballerina, and Ruth Gordon (Rosemary's Baby, 1968) as a satan-worshipping neighbor. But aren't we here to talk about zombies? Searchlight To date, the only zombie movies to receive Oscar attention were King of the Zombies (1941) in Best Score, Young Frankenstein (1974) in Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound, Frankenstein (1994) in Best Makeup, and Frankenweenie (2012) in Best Animated Feature. There's some debate about whether Emma Stone's character in Poor Things (2023) is actually a zombie, considering she was brought back to life via a brain transplant, but that film received 11 bids and won four: Best Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. Speaking of that Best Makeup category, since its creation in 1981, genre films like An American Werewolf in London (1981), The Fly (1986), Beetlejuice (1988), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), The Wolfman (2010), Poor Things, and The Substance have all taken home trophies.
