Single dad charged with 11 counts of posting ‘excessively obscene' comments about Nurul Izzah on Facebook
SEPANG, June 20 — A diver and single father pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to 11 charges of making indecent and excessively obscene comments targeting Nurul Izzah Anwar, the daughter of the Prime Minister, on Facebook earlier this year.
The accused, Ruslan Mat Ali, 48, entered the plea after the charges were read before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.
He is accused of knowingly making and initiating the transmission of indecent and excessively obscene comments with the intent to annoy others, on the Facebook account under his name, Ruslan Mat Ali, allegedly committed between January 21 and February 25.
He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction.
According to the first charge, the indecent post was accessed on February 4 at approximately 7.00am at MCMC Tower 1, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya.
For the second to eleventh charges, the posts were accessed on February 26, between 1.51pm and 4.30pm, at the MCMC Centre of Excellence, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab proposed that bail be set at RM15,000 with one surety.
However, the accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower amount, citing the absence of a fixed income and the responsibility of supporting his three children.
Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman set bail at RM10,000, with case mention fixed for July 18.
The accused failed to post bail and has been remanded until the next mention date. — Bernama

KUANTAN, June 20 — The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) added 59 names to its Investor Alert List in the first quarter (1Q) of this year, said chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He said this move is part of ongoing efforts to combat the increasingly rampant scams, alongside blocking fraudulent websites and social media pages. 'In 2024, we added 273 names to the Alert List, and in the 1Q this year, we added another 59,' he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 programme. The event was officiated by Pahang Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. Mohammad Faiz added that the SC also collaborates closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block these deceptive sites. 'Last year, we blocked 153 websites and 261 social media pages. In the 1Q, we blocked 29 websites and 91 social media pages. These numbers show how much illicit activity we are fighting daily,' he said. As of May 2025, he said, the SC had received 1,218 complaints and enquiries about scams. Mohammad Faiz also reminded the public to be cautious of scams that claim to be Shariah compliant, using religious sentiment to gain trust. Contractor and ex-wife sentenced to 34 years for killing domestic helper in Penampang, cruelty revealed in court
KOTA KINABALU, June 20 — A contractor and his former wife were each sentenced to 34 years in prison by the High Court here on Friday after being found guilty of murdering their domestic helper in December 2021. Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng delivered the verdict against Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos, 44, and Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 37, who were convicted of the murder of 28-year-old Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin. The offence took place over several days, between December 8 and 11, 2021, in a condominium unit at Amber Tower, Lido Avenue in Penampang, near here. Ambree was also sentenced to receive 12 strokes of the cane, while Etiqah, an engineer with Petronas and a former Masterchef Malaysia finalist, was spared caning due to her gender provisions. In the judgement, the judge said that the prosecution proved that the couple had acted with intent in causing the injuries and that the deceased succumbed to the injuries. He also noted that the ex-spouses had tried to blame each other for the death during the course of the trial. In passing judgement, Lim said that although both lawyers had put up impassioned mitigation pleas, he could not ignore the cruelty suffered by the deceased at the hands of the accused, as highlighted by the prosecution. 'The court considered the nature of the injuries and the manner in which they were inflicted over time,' he said. Both had been out on bail throughout the trial but were ordered to begin serving their sentences immediately upon conviction. During the trial, it was revealed that the victim had been subjected to prolonged abuse, resulting in fatal injuries, with evidence of trauma to her face and deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus urged the court to impose the death sentence. She argued that the case had shocked not only the conscience of Sabahans, but of the nation as a whole, and for that reason, must be met with the full weight of the law. She said that the victim had sought honest work with the couple during the pandemic but was instead subjected to daily torment, denied basic rights, and robbed of her life. Dacia said evidence before the court, including videos and images recovered from the accused's phones, stood as disturbing documentation of the deceased's torment. 'This evidence not only corroborated the abuse but also revealed the accused persons' chilling intent to record and preserve her suffering. 'We wish to remind the court that in this case, the condition of the deceased's body was so severely deteriorated that her husband was only able to identify her by the bangle she wore on her wrist, a silent witness to the life she once lived and the violence she endured,' she said. The couple were jointly charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read together with Section 34, which deals with common intention. The charge carries a prison term ranging from 30 to 40 years and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Datuk Ram Singh represented Ambree while Datuk Rakhbir Singh represented Etiqah.

Counter rally to clash with anti-graft student protest on Sabah governor's birthday tomorrow
KOTA KINABALU, June 20 — A new pro-government youth movement is set to take to the streets of Kota Kinabalu this weekend to counter the Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 anti-graft rally. The Gerakan Anak Muda dan Mahasiswa Anak Sabah (Gammas) has announced its intention to hold a peaceful assembly on Gaya Street, explicitly to counter what it calls the 'misrepresentation' by the student activist group Suara Mahasiswa UMS, which is organising Gempur. 'The purpose of this gathering is not to rival the anti-corruption rally 2.0 organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, but rather to clarify to the public that the majority of students at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) do not support the rally organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS,' they said in a statement today. While the Suara Mahasiswa protest is focused on government accountability and alleged mismanagement of funds, Gammas said they will be demonstrating in support of the state leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the GRS-PH coalition government. 'The main objectives of the gathering is to express support for our chief minister and the GRS-PH government to continue leading Sabah, as they have shown strong commitment to student and youth welfare,' they said. They outlined several benefits such as the Sentosa one-off RM300 assistance for students studying in Sabah, the Budi programme offering RM1,500–2,000 in cash aid for qualified tertiary education students, the Subfly flight ticket subsidy programme, public scholarships amounting to RM50 million and laptop assistance among others. The group also voiced strong support for the monarchical institution in Sabah, claiming it is a unifying force in a multicultural state and criticising what it sees as attempts by Peninsular-based political actors to undermine it. They said they submitted their notice of the rally to the Kota Kinabalu police on June 16. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally was given the greenlight by police on June 18. They had announced their rally last month. The rally is expected to begin on Saturday at 1.00pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands include action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms for the anti-corruption commission and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. The rallies coincide with the 74th official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri tomorrow morning.
