Ex-Walter Sisulu councillors guilty in RDP scam, ordered to repay R80K
Two ex-councillors from Walter Sisulu Municipality have been sentenced for defrauding a woman of R150,000 in a fake RDP housing scam. Both have been ordered to repay R80,000 by August 2025.

Two former councillors of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape have been found guilty of defrauding a woman of over R150,000 in a bogus Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing deal.
Mokhoabane Spetla Moahlodi, 63, and Mxolisi Mdumisa,44, were arrested in 2018 by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
The two had promised the victim an RDP house in April 2017 in exchange for payment, which she duly deposited into their account. However, the promised house was never delivered.
After several court appearances, the pair were sentenced to five years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on the condition that they repay R80,000.
Each was ordered to repay R40,000 immediately, with the remaining balance to be settled by August 6, 2025.

SAPS intensifies crackdown on gender-based violence with over 200 arrests in one week

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk said over the past week, a total of 201 suspects were arrested for rape during operations across the country. 'Of these, 56 were wanted individuals tracked down in various provinces,' she said. According to Van Wyk, among the arrests was that of a man and woman in Bloubergstrand, Western Cape, for the alleged sexual abuse of their daughters, aged three and eight. 'Police seized multiple electronic devices during their arrest. Next Stay Close ✕ In another recent case, Van Wyk said a 24-year-old suspect was arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tonga, Mpumalanga, on June 19, 2025, following the gang-rape of a 27-year-old woman earlier this week. Investigations into this incident are ongoing, she added. Van Wyk also listed notable convictions this past week, including the sentencing of a 33-year-old serial rapist on June 9, 2025, by the Polokwane High Court. Lesley Morwamashobe Mohlala was sentenced to 222 years' imprisonment. 'He was found guilty on multiple counts of rape and aggravated robbery.' In another case, Van Wyk said the East London High Court sentenced a 42-year-old accused to life imprisonment for the rape of a 13-year-old girl, who became pregnant as a result of the assault. On June 18, 2025, she said the Waterval Regional Court sentenced a 25-year-old man from Tshiozwi, Limpopo, to life imprisonment for raping his nine-year-old cousin in 2021. Van Wyk said the SAPS remains committed to ensuring justice prevails for victims by 'removing sexual predators from our communities'. As part of a broader initiative, Nomgqibelo Mdlalose, Movement Navigator for the End GBVF 100-Day Challenges, stated that many teams within the movement are working closely with young people to address GBVF at a grassroots level. With over 200 challenges planned for 2025, the End GBVF 100-Day Challenges are accelerating action against GBVF within courts, municipalities, and higher education. 'Youth engagement isn't about campaigns or one-day events - it's a commitment to show up and respond. What's been powerful to see through the 100-Day Challenge teams is how they're showing up consistently in the spaces where young people spend most of their time, such as preschools, classrooms, and college campuses,' said Mdlalose. In the Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape, an ambitious effort is under way to train 500 Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers as GBVF first responders. The movement said on Thursday that over the next 100 days, 15 preschools will become part of a network of care where teachers are trained to identify early signs of abuse and respond in trauma-sensitive ways. The importance of this work lies in its timing, it said, stating that these are the years when children first learn what safety feels like, when trust is built or broken. And because many survivors never disclose what happened to them as children, interventions at this stage could be life-altering. 'GBVF prevention starts with the relationships and environments that shape how young people understand harm and support avenues,' added Mdlalose. According to the movement, Taletso TVET College in Mafikeng, in partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority, is fostering accountability and legal literacy through workshops on the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Acts. These sessions aim to empower students to report abuse and understand their rights, addressing the normalisation of harmful behaviour on campus and the hundreds of GBVF-related misconduct cases reported in higher education. Limpopo's 100-Day Challenge teams have held Moot Court sessions for high schoolers, demonstrating sexual offence trials and minimum sentences for rape. The movement said this teaches young people that violence is wrong and shows them how justice is served, making the law tangible and fairness achievable.

Cape Town tax fraudster sentenced to three years for defrauding SARS

Image: File Bogus tax practitioner, Faried van der Schyff, has been sentenced to three years' direct imprisonment for defrauding the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to the tune of R60,000. Van der Schyff, 59, was sentenced in the Cape Town Regional Court on Friday. Hawks spokesperson, Zinzi Hani, confirmed that he was convicted on five of the seven criminal charges he had faced. Van der Schyff is also a co-accused in the mammoth trial against Nafiz Modack and 14 others in the Western Cape High Court, where the accused face approximately 3,000 criminal charges, which include counts of murder, extortion, and contraventions of POCA. Modack was recently also convicted in the Cape Town Regional Court on corruption charges. Van der Schyff was found guilty of income tax fraud, contravention of the Tax Administration Act, and contravention of the Correctional Services Act, and will serve three years in jail. It was reported that Van der Schyff committed fraud from 2016 to 2019 by operating illegally as a tax practitioner without being registered with SARS. 'The accused made clients believe that he was authorised to submit tax-related documents to SARS on behalf of the clients. Due to the accused's criminal activities, SARS suffered actual loss of R60,000,' said Hani. Van der Schyff was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for fraud, two years for contravention of the Administration Act, and two years for the contravention of the Correctional Act for the illegal possession of a cellular device while in custody.

The Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court sentenced Nhlakanipho Dlamini, 46, for two counts of corruption for an offence he committed in January 2020 while he was employed as a fleet supervisor in the Msunduzi Municipality. Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks-DPCI), said that during the execution of his duties, Dlamini demanded a gratification of R100,000 from the service provider to process a payment of R1.5 million that was owed by the municipality. Dlamini only processed a payment of R1 million and continued to demand cash to process the remaining amount. 'An intensive investigation was conducted, and an undercover operation followed. Dlamini was caught red-handed after collecting cash from the complainant. He was placed under arrest and charged with corruption,' Mhlongo said. On August 27, 2024, Dlamini was found guilty on two counts of corruption. The Northern Areas Residents and Ratepayers Association (NARRA) acknowledged the prosecution team for their diligence and commitment to upholding the rule of law. Jimmy Naidoo, chairperson of the NARRA, said this successful outcome is a strong indication that consequence management is both possible and necessary in the public service. Naidoo believes this case must serve as a precedent for ongoing and future investigations, as it is clear that corruption remains entrenched in many municipalities. He added that the NARRA continues to advocate for transparency, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption. 'We urge that more investigations be pursued vigorously so that those who abuse public resources are held to account. Only through consistent and decisive action can public trust in local governance be restored. We applaud the investigating and prosecution teams for getting to the root of the problem and encourage all oversight bodies to remain steadfast in the fight against corruption.'
