SAPS intensifies crackdown on gender-based violence with over 200 arrests in one week

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested more than 200 suspects for rape during operations across the country in a week to intensify efforts in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk said over the past week, a total of 201 suspects were arrested for rape during operations across the country.
'Of these, 56 were wanted individuals tracked down in various provinces,' she said.
According to Van Wyk, among the arrests was that of a man and woman in Bloubergstrand, Western Cape, for the alleged sexual abuse of their daughters, aged three and eight.
'Police seized multiple electronic devices during their arrest. They face several charges, including the production of child sexual abuse material ('child pornography'), rape, sexual assault, and sexual grooming,' she stated.

In another recent case, Van Wyk said a 24-year-old suspect was arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tonga, Mpumalanga, on June 19, 2025, following the gang-rape of a 27-year-old woman earlier this week.
Investigations into this incident are ongoing, she added.
Van Wyk also listed notable convictions this past week, including the sentencing of a 33-year-old serial rapist on June 9, 2025, by the Polokwane High Court.
Lesley Morwamashobe Mohlala was sentenced to 222 years' imprisonment. 'He was found guilty on multiple counts of rape and aggravated robbery.'
In another case, Van Wyk said the East London High Court sentenced a 42-year-old accused to life imprisonment for the rape of a 13-year-old girl, who became pregnant as a result of the assault.
On June 18, 2025, she said the Waterval Regional Court sentenced a 25-year-old man from Tshiozwi, Limpopo, to life imprisonment for raping his nine-year-old cousin in 2021.
Van Wyk said the SAPS remains committed to ensuring justice prevails for victims by 'removing sexual predators from our communities'.
As part of a broader initiative, Nomgqibelo Mdlalose, Movement Navigator for the End GBVF 100-Day Challenges, stated that many teams within the movement are working closely with young people to address GBVF at a grassroots level.
With over 200 challenges planned for 2025, the End GBVF 100-Day Challenges are accelerating action against GBVF within courts, municipalities, and higher education.
'Youth engagement isn't about campaigns or one-day events - it's a commitment to show up and respond. What's been powerful to see through the 100-Day Challenge teams is how they're showing up consistently in the spaces where young people spend most of their time, such as preschools, classrooms, and college campuses,' said Mdlalose.
In the Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape, an ambitious effort is under way to train 500 Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers as GBVF first responders.
The movement said on Thursday that over the next 100 days, 15 preschools will become part of a network of care where teachers are trained to identify early signs of abuse and respond in trauma-sensitive ways.
The importance of this work lies in its timing, it said, stating that these are the years when children first learn what safety feels like, when trust is built or broken. And because many survivors never disclose what happened to them as children, interventions at this stage could be life-altering.
'GBVF prevention starts with the relationships and environments that shape how young people understand harm and support avenues,' added Mdlalose.
According to the movement, Taletso TVET College in Mafikeng, in partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority, is fostering accountability and legal literacy through workshops on the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Acts.
These sessions aim to empower students to report abuse and understand their rights, addressing the normalisation of harmful behaviour on campus and the hundreds of GBVF-related misconduct cases reported in higher education.
Limpopo's 100-Day Challenge teams have held Moot Court sessions for high schoolers, demonstrating sexual offence trials and minimum sentences for rape.
The movement said this teaches young people that violence is wrong and shows them how justice is served, making the law tangible and fairness achievable.

On Friday, Mchunu released amendments to South African Police Service (SAPS) Regulations for the Hawks, which were first introduced in September 2010. In terms of the regulations, Hawks officers are to be subjected to integrity testing, including polygraph, alcohol, and drug tests. In addition, every member, irrespective of rank, shall, not later than April 30 of every year, disclose to the minister his or her registrable business interests, those registrable interests of his or her immediate family members, of which he or she is aware. Integrity testing programmes may involve an act or omission (by a person who is conducting the integrity testing) that offers a relevant member whose integrity is being tested the opportunity to engage in behaviour, whether lawful or unlawful, in contravention of the SAPS's code of conduct or contravention of any law; or constituting misconduct in terms of the disciplinary regulations. According to the regulations, integrity testing also involves testing a member for the abuse of alcohol or drugs, or using the polygraph or a similar instrument. Mchunu's amendments make provision for a report detailing the outcome of the polygraph or similar test to be submitted to the integrity section for further investigation. '(The) integrity section must, as soon as such investigation is finalised, submit the investigation report to the head of the directorate and the vetting officers for further handling,' state the amendments. Hawks members who, without good reason, fail to provide a specimen of breath as required commit misconduct, and if found guilty, may be subject to the sanction for disobeying a lawful order, command, or instruction in terms of the SAPS disciplinary regulations. Specimens of breath from a relevant Hawks member when reporting for duty, while on duty or while on call for duty, may not have any evidence of alcohol when such member is tested.

Tragic farewell: Slain journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu laid to rest on what would have been his 39th birthday

Image: File In a heart-wrenching ceremony, family, friends and supporters gathered in Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga, to bid farewell to acclaimed journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu, whose life was tragically cut short. Saturday, June 21 marks a poignant milestone, as it would have been his 39th birthday. Meanwhile, his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, was laid to rest on Friday, June 20. The couple, who went missing on February 18, 2025, had their bodies discovered in May, discarded in a secluded bush area in Rust de Winter, near the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Speaking to SABC at the funeral, Ndlovu's brother, Elvis Ndlovu, shared a moment of closure for the family, and said, "I can see my mother is also getting stronger; it's not like before. We have found closure knowing that we are laying him to rest." Speaking to mourners, a family member told mourners that one of the suspects, Samuel Mogongwe, frequently visited Ndlovu's home during the time the couple was still missing and kept asking whether they had been found," "I'm asking myself how he slept at night. He knew we were being investigated, I was also investigated. He never said anything. At least he could have returned them where he found them, and they would have been found sooner," she said. The woman spoke about how the alleged mastermind betrayed the family and left them with profound hurt since the passing of Ndlovu and his partner. Two soldiers dead after altercation at Mpumalanga military base
A violent altercation at the Macadamia Military Base in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, claimed the lives of two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers on Saturday morning, 21 June. According to a SANDF media statement, one soldier allegedly fatally stabbed two of his colleagues during a tragic confrontation. The motive behind the incident remains unclear at this stage. The SANDF and South African Police Service (SAPS) have launched a joint investigation into the matter. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the alleged perpetrator, pending the completion of official inquiries and notification of next of kin. 'The circumstances surrounding the incident remain the subject of an ongoing inquiry. Further details will be communicated once officially verified,' the statement read. Rear Admiral (Junior Grade) Prince Tshabalala, Director of Defence Corporate Communication, confirmed the incident. He said investigators are working urgently to piece together the events that led to the double fatality. The Port Alfred Regional Court sentenced former SAPS commander Ncamisa Donkrag to five years in prison on Friday, 9 May 2025. The court suspended the sentence for five years. It also ordered Donkrag to repay SAPS R12 767.80 after she pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud. In May 2022, she claimed she had travelled from Port Alfred to Port Edward, Mount Ayliff, and Mzamba using her private vehicle. SAPS reimbursed her R8 062.58. The trip never happened. In September 2022, she submitted another false claim. This time, she said she had travelled to Zwelitsha and Addo. She received R4 705.25.
