Sweden: Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson calls Örebro shooting 'worst in Swedish history'

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson says that the shooting at an adult education centre which killed about 10 people was the "worst mass shooting in Swedish history."
Speaking at a joint press conference with Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, Kristersson condemned the "brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people", adding that at the moment it is unclear what motives may have been behind it.
"It is difficult to take in the extent of what has happened today. Darkness is being cast over Sweden tonight. It is with bottomless sadness that we have received the news from the police that about ten people have been killed and several have been injured in a school shooting in Örebro. What must not happen has now also happened in Sweden," Kristersson told reporters in Stockholm.
Justice Minister Strömmer confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway and that perpetrator also died at the scene.
"The person that the police currently assess to be the primary perpetrator belongs to the deceased. This is a person who is not known to the police before. Of course, we want to understand why, what has happened and what a perpetrator may have had for motives. We will have to wait for those answers. In time, the picture will become clearer. This is something that the investigation that has now been initiated will show," Strömmer said.
The shooting took place on the outskirts of the city of Örebro, which is located about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm. The gunman is reported to have opened fire at around 12:30pm local time, after many students had gone home following a national exam.
Students sheltered in nearby buildings and other parts of the school were evacuated. Police vehicles and ambulances, lights flashing, were seen across the parking lots and streets around the school as a helicopter flew overhead.
The school, called Campus Risbergska, serves students over age 20, according to its website. Primary and upper secondary school courses are offered, as well as Swedish classes for immigrants, vocational training and programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Earlier on Tuesday Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police, said the damage at the crime scene was so extensive that investigators were unable to be more definitive on the conclusive number of those wounded.
Police raided the suspect's home after the shooting, but it wasn't immediately clear what they found. Eid Forest said police believe the perpetrator acted alone, and there were no warning signs before the attack.
Authorities said that there were no suspected connections to terrorism at this point, but police didn't provide a motive.
Authorities are working to identify the deceased.

Millions of people are unable to have the number of children they want due to barriers related to economic and health factors, according to a new United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report. The study reveals that a lack of choice, not desire, is what is stopping people from having the families they want, defying claims of people rejecting parenthood. UNFPA and YouGov conducted an online survey of more than 14,000 adults, both men and women, across 14 countries that together are home to over 37% of the global population. The majority of both men and women in the four EU member states - Italy, Hungary, Germany and Sweden - analysed in the study indicated that two children is their ideal number. Among these four EU countries analysed in the study, factors such as infertility and difficulty conceiving, as well as poor general health or chronic illnesses, impact Italy the most, with 15% and 13% respectively. Germany and Sweden also reported similar issues. Financial limitations are also one of the main issues keeping these countries from having more children, with Hungary reporting the highest rate at 34%. Germany and Sweden have also pointed out financial limitations as a primary concern regarding their desired number of children. Meanwhile, Italian respondents struggled the most with unemployment or job insecurity at 30%. Concerns regarding the current political or social landscape were noted as a barrier by 19% of respondents in Italy. Italian, Swedish, and Hungarian respondents were also concerned by the lack of a suitable partner, at 17%. Only 15% of those surveyed in Germany shared this concern. Police in the United Kingdom are searching for suspects and the military is reviewing its security procedures after pro-Palestinian activists broke into a Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire and damaged two planes with red paint, officials said on Friday. The group Palestine Action said two members entered RAF Brize Norton, some 110 kilometres west of London, on Wednesday and used electric scooters to approach the Voyager jets, which are used for air-to-air refuelling. The duo sprayed red paint into the planes' turbine engines with repurposed fire extinguishers. Posts misrepresent Thailand air force chief's remarks as Cambodia border row rumbles on

The video of Air Force Chief Punpakdee Pattanakul answering questions from reporters was viewed at least 1.7 million times after it was posted on TikTok on June 9, 2025. Thai-language text superimposed on the clip reads: "If Cambodia doesn't back off, Thailand will completely seize the country. The air force says Phnom Penh could be reduced to rubble within 5 minutes." It circulated as Thailand and Cambodia faced off over a border dispute that led to an exchange of fire on May 28 in which one Cambodia solder was killed (archived link). Both the Thai and Cambodian armies said they had acted in self-defence. While Thailand and Cambodia agreed to reposition their troops in the area to reduce confrontations, Phnom Penh has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to help resolve the border dispute (archived here and here). Cambodia banned the import of Thai fruit and vegetables on June 17 after Bangkok refused to lift recently imposed border crossing restrictions.
