JK Rowling reveals how involved she is in Harry Potter TV reboot after backlash

J.K. Rowling has confirmed the extent of her involvement in the upcoming Harry Potter revival.
The 59-year-old author behind the iconic magical franchise has sparked backlash in recent years over her comments about the trans community, and HBO's TV series has been drawn into the controversy.
The network previously defended Rowling over her 'right to express her personal views', while confirming she has a hand in the project.
Now, the writer has gone further in explaining just how involved she actually is.
'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD,' she wrote on X over the weekend.
When a fan asked if her post meant she wasn't penning the series, she insisted while that's true, she has still been hands-on.

Rowling replied: 'No, but I've worked closely with the extremely talented writers.'
It was previously revealed the author is serving as an executive producer on the Harry Potter series.
'We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter – the heartwarming books that speak to the power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,' HBO told Variety.
'JK Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.'

Some of the cast have already been forced to respond to backlash over the show and wider franchise over its creator's comments, which some have deemed as transphobic.
In a recent interview with The Observer, Hot Fuzz star Nick Frost insisted he does not share Rowling's views.
'She's allowed her opinion and I'm allowed mine, they just don't align in any way, shape or form,' he said.
He also argued that the controversy and backlash might not be something people should want to 'blow over' for the sake of the wizarding franchise.
Asked if it could 'overshadow the series', he replied: 'I don't know. But maybe it shouldn't blow over? We shouldn't just hope it will go away, because it makes it easier. Maybe we should educate ourselves.'

However, Tom Felton – who played Draco Malfoy in the film series – was criticised recently when he refused to take a stance on Rowling as he signed on to reprise his character in the Potter stage play The Cursed Child on Broadway.
Asked directly whether the controversy around her divisive position on the trans community had impacted his work with the franchise, he replied: 'I can't say it does, I'm not really that attuned to it.'
He added: 'I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. She's responsible for that, so I'm incredibly grateful.'

Sizzling period drama saved from cancellation returns for 'best season yet'
The widely loved period drama, The Gilded Age, has returned for a third season after it was saved from getting the axe. The show, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, immerses viewers in the upper echelons of New York society at the turn of the 19th century, where wealth, status and scandal ruled supreme. The Emmy-nominated series has had a rocky time since it was first announced in 2012. Almost eight years later, it had to shut down production just days before filming the first season when the pandemic started. Then, in 2024, one of the lead stars Carrie Coon (The White Lotus) admitted there was a strong sense that the HBO show may not even return at all – ultimately she credited the fans with saving the show. Reflecting on the time before season two, the actor told Deadline: 'We were on the bubble. We really didn't think we were going to come back. Our options had lapsed. It looked very unlikely, but it was the streaming. 'It was the number of people watching the show and loving the show.' Then, in February 2025, she reiterated that the show had been in perilous waters. 'The gays saved it,' Coon joked with Entertainment Tonight. 'Thank you, right now, you saved it. We would not have a season three without you.' Season three was confirmed in December 2023 and, after a one-and-a-half-year wait, fans can finally sink their teeth into a brand new season. As usual, we will see tensions boil as old and new money clash with Coon's character Bertha returning alongside Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga. The synopsis for the third season reads: 'Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionise the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first. 'Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.' Aka… salacious drama, what's not to love? The new season has already raked in rave reviews ahead of its premiere. Variety has praised it as the 'best season yet'. 'The Gilded Age no longer feels torn between ogling the past and honouring its flaws. Three seasons in, it's on firmer footing than ever,' the review continued. Roger Egbert said the new season 'dazzles and delights', and Slate said the 'new season is peppered with twists and scandal, heartbreak and horror – and, of course, more extravagant hats than Churchill Downs has ever seen.' For those still needing to catch up, there are plenty of glowing reviews of seasons past from fans as well. 'Awesome interweaving of real-life events and characters make this show exceptional and the acting is stellar. The most sumptuous costumes and sets I have ever seen top it off; it is a veritable feast for the eyes,' Google reviews user Fleur Purdeu said. Strictly judge Anton du Beke tells wife to 'grow up' over 'extraordinary' issue

Chatting on the My Time Capsule podcast, the 58-year-old Strictly Come Dancing judge disclosed one of his biggest gripes, which centres around how people use their mobile phones. The ballroom dancing star is not at all impressed by folks who use their phone's loudspeaker in public places. He quipped that "everyone's got an earphone" and humorously noted that it's possible to "actually hold these things up to your ear". This led to a broader discussion about contemporary mobile phone habits. Anton observed that nowadays, people no longer "like to pick the phone up", something his own wife, Hannah Summers, also tends to avoid. Anton recounted: "Young people will be going, 'Phone calls? What's he talking about? We just text and email and WhatsApp. We never actually answer the phone. Are you mad?'" She goes, 'Oh, I don't really like speaking on the phone'. "I just go, 'Grow up, I said. Grow up. Sort yourself out. What are you talking about?'I don't like talking on the phone'." Anton and Hannah, who tied the knot in 2017, first crossed paths at a golf club back in 2011. The couple resides in Buckinghamshire with their twins, George and Henrietta. In a bit of telly gossip, Anton, a stalwart of the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing' since its 2004 debut, offered a glimpse into his family life, revealing that his children "burst into tears" upon seeing him on TV for the first time. He kicked off his Strictly journey as a professional dancer and once ranked 14th globally in ballroom dancing with his partner Erin Boag. In a twist of fate, 2021 saw him hang up his dancing shoes to take up the mantle of judge, stepping in for 'Britain's Got Talent' sensation Bruno Tonioli. The first time my children, when they were very little, they saw me dancing on television and I was in the living room, and they saw me dancing on television and they burst into tears." Anton said they "couldn't quite grasp the concept" of him being at home and on the television, as well as "this other woman in Daddy's arms", adding that the show is a "massive part of the family". On another note, Anton once confessed to making a rather "terrible" initial impression on his now-wife. Recounting the tale on the 'White Wine Question Time' podcast, host Kate Thornton quizzed him about his early attempts to woo Hannah. Kate recounted: "Apparently the first thing she said to you was weirdo. Because you were hanging around outside a toilet at a golf club event to try and catch her eye, she thought you were odd." He responded that she did something "that you girls tend to do", saying that she "didn't look at me but looked at me". Anton went on to say she "did that thing with the hair around the ears".
