Uzbekistan Airlines commences direct Islamabad-to-Tashkent flight
KARACHI: Uzbekistan Airlines has commenced direct flight to Pakistan connecting Islamabad to Tashkent, strengthening air links between Pakistan and Central Asia.
According to the details, the flight HY466 departed Islamabad International Airport at 1:09 PM local time, carrying 126 passengers on the historic route that promises to boost regional connectivity and foster stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) organized a ceremonial send-off that transformed Zone 1 of the airport into a festive venue, complete with colourful balloons and celebratory decorations befitting the momentous occasion.

The launch ceremony drew significant diplomatic attention, with ambassadors from four Central Asian nations attending the event. Representatives from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan were present, underscoring the broader regional importance of this new air route.
Senior aviation officials also participated in the celebrations, including the Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager, the Managing Director of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), and Uzbekistan Airlines' Country Manager.
The festivities included a warm reception for passengers at Stand 3, followed by a formal cake-cutting ceremony in the airport's upper lounge area. This new direct route represents more than just another flight connection – it opens a gateway for enhanced trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Pakistan and Central Asia.

The meeting also discussed integrated logistics solutions bonded warehouses, multimodal transport systems, and smart port infrastructure as enablers of efficient cross-border trade. Synergy with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was recognised as vital for expanding Uzbekistan's reach to a $6 trillion regional market. Chaudhry stressed the importance of integrating Uzbekistan into maritime ecosystem through ports like Gwadar and Karachi offering cost-effective and efficient access to global markets. 'Uzbekistan can invest in improving road infrastructure and connectivity to Gwadar port underlining its commercial viability and alignment with global sustainability goals,' the minister suggested. The both sides explored avenues for joint ventures in key blue economy sectors, including marine fisheries, aquaculture, seafood processing, and coastal tourism, all poised to generate high returns in Gulf, African, and Southeast Asian markets. Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry extended an invitation to Uzbekistan to invest in Pakistan's port-based industries, shipbuilding, and renewable ocean energy initiatives. This engagement marks a significant step forward in Pakistan-Uzbekistan relations, laying the groundwork for a long-term maritime partnership rooted in blue economy collaboration, innovation, and regional integration. Responding to the minister's proposal, both sides agreed to convene fast-track consultative meetings involving technical experts. These sessions will identify Uzbekistan's specific maritime needs and determine Pakistan's potential offerings to support them. Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry further proposed a trilateral collaboration between Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan to enhance overland connectivity to Gwadar Port positioning it as a key gateway for Central Asian states through integrated road and rail networks. Uzbekistan's Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev expressed strong interest in launching joint ventures in the seafood sector, particularly in fisheries production. He also suggested the allocation of an off-dock terminal dedicated to Uzbek trade operations in Pakistan. The ambassador informed the minister that a delegation of Uzbek business leaders would soon visit Karachi to inspect port infrastructure and operations especially those related to the Marine Fisheries Department as part of efforts to deepen commercial cooperation. The summit in Astana brought together Xi with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Under Russia's orbit until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the five Central Asian states have courted interest from major powers including China, the European Union and the United States since becoming independent. At the summit, the group signed a pact of "eternal" friendship as Xi called for closer ties with the resource-rich region. "We should... strengthen cooperation with a more enterprising attitude and more practical measures," said Xi in comments carried by state news agency Xinhua. Central Asia is also seen as a key logistics hub, given its strategic location between China, Russia, the Middle East and Europe. Speaking as Western leaders gathered on the other side of the world for the G7 in Canada, Xi refreshed his criticism of US President Donald Trump's trade policies. "Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners," Xinhua quoted him as saying. While Central Asian leaders continue to view Russia as a strategic partner, ties with Moscow have loosened since the war in Ukraine. Xi signs treaty to elevate ties with Central Asia
BEIJING: China President Xi Jinping signed a treaty to elevate ties with Central Asian nations on Tuesday, as Beijing looks to further deepen cooperation on trade, energy and infrastructure with the resource-rich region. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Beijing has been stepping up efforts to boost economic links with Central Asian nations traditionally within Russia's sphere of influence, drawn by their strategic location and energy resources. At a regional summit in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Tuesday, Xi, lauding a milestone, signed a treaty of 'permanent good-neighbourliness and friendly cooperation' with leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. The summit this week is the second such gathering, following the pomp-filled, inaugural gathering in northwest China in 2023. Both occasions have coincided with meetings of G7 leaders. 'At present, the world is undergoing accelerating changes unseen in a century, entering a new period of turbulence and transformation,' Xinhua quoted Xi as saying in a speech at the summit. 'Trade wars and tariff wars produce no winners, and unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemonism are bound to harm both others and oneself,' he said, in a thinly veiled swipe at the United States that had engaged in escalating tariffs with Beijing. 'China is ready to work with Central Asian countries to safeguard international justice, oppose hegemonism and power politics,' Xi said. He also pledged 1.5 billion yuan ($208.86 million) in grant assistance to the Central Asian countries this year to support their livelihood and development projects, and called for more cooperation in areas including trade, minerals and agriculture. Despite a trade truce with the US, Beijing has been keen to consolidate relations with its regional partners. China's two-way trade with the five Central Asian countries reached a record 286.42 billion yuan in the first five months this year, a 10.4% year-on-year increase, Xinhua reported citing the Chinese Customs. Turkmenistan, a major supplier of natural gas for China, is the only Central Asian nation with a trade surplus with China. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan's trade deficits with China run into the tens of billions. ENERGY, MINERAL COOPERATIONS In separate bilateral meetings with the regional leaders, Xi called for expanded cooperation in natural gas, minerals, international railway and law enforcement, according to summaries posted by the Chinese foreign ministry. In meetings with the Uzbek and Kyrgyz presidents on Tuesday, he urged progress on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, an overland route bypassing Russia.
