When Paresh Rawal admitted feeling trapped as Baburao in ‘Hera Pheri': ‘I need mukti from that role'
Who doesn't love Babu Bhaiya? From his big glasses and white dhoti to his hilarious one-liners like 'Ladki ka chakkar Babu Bhaiya' and 'Arey tu jaa re', the character of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte from the hit film 'Hera Pheri' has become a cult favourite across generations.
Actor
Paresh Rawal
brought the role to life with his perfect comic timing and unforgettable expressions, making Baburao one of the most loved comedy characters in Bollywood.
Paresh recently shocked fans when he revealed that he would not be returning as Baburao in the much-awaited 'Hera Pheri 3', directed by
Priyadarshan
. His decision left fans disappointed.
In an earlier interview with The Lallantop, Rawal had confessed that while people still adore Baburao, the role now feels like a trap to him. Speaking candidly, he said his 'Hera Pheri' character feels like a 'gale ka phanda'- a noose around his neck
'I felt choked.
I need mukti.'
Rawal didn't hold back while explaining his feelings about being typecast. He shared how he once went to filmmaker
Vishal Bhardwaj
in 2007, just a year after 'Hera Pheri 2' was released, asking for a different kind of role. He said, "I went to Vishal Bhardwaj [director] in 2007. In 2006, Hera Pheri 2 was released. I told him that I have a film. I want to get rid of this image. You are the person who can offer me a completely different role in the same getup."
Bhardwaj was curious why Rawal wanted to move on from such a popular role. To this, Rawal responded, "Whoever comes to me, he has an image of Hera Pheri in mind. I am an actor. I don't want to get stuck at one place."
This shows how deeply Rawal felt about his artistic journey. As he explained further, "I asked him to offer me a new character in the same getup. I felt happy but dum ghutta hai (I felt choked). I need mukti (liberation) from that role.'
Paresh Rawal's exit from 'Hera Pheri 3'
When news emerged that Paresh Rawal had quit 'Hera Pheri 3', many people assumed it was because of creative differences. However, the actor was quick to clear up the misunderstanding and put the rumours to rest. He stated, 'I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences. I REITERATE THAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DISAGREEMENT WITH THE FILM MAKER. I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr.
Priyadarshan the film director.'

Rana Naidu 2 actor Rana Daggubati on online negativity against cinema: Art has to disturb those who are comfortable
Actor Rana Daggubati, who recently returned with season 2 of the web show Rana Naidu, continues to balance his presence between the big screen and the OTT space. No stranger to long-form storytelling - having made his streaming debut in 2023 - Rana says he has developed a measured understanding of cynicism often disguised as opinion - and how to rise above it. 'Art has to disturb the guys who are comfortable and create some kind of satisfaction to those who are disturbed and I believe in that,' says Rana, as he goes on to talk about online trolling. Rana Daggubati takes on trolls and shares with negativity. Sharing how he remains unfazed by online negativity, the 40-year-old says, 'Commenting is everybody's job and social media is a real thing. Everyone feels the need to say something and that necessarily doesn't have to be right or wrong - it's just someone's opinion.' Also Read| Exclusive| Rana Naidu 2 actor Rana Daggubati: Globally, theatres are on a decline Rana, who has worked across the Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi film industries, is well-versed in the different cultural expectations and the varied emotional responses of audiences when a film falls short of those expectations. 'When you take the size of a country like ours, the cultural understanding of people is very different,' Rana says. Recalling his experiences promoting films across India, he adds, 'We travel so many kilometers with a sense of what they (audience) understand, and it can be very different from how we choose to live our own lives.' He acknowledges that in a country as vast and diverse as India, different opinions are inevitable and one should take it in their stride. 'It just gives us a sense of understanding of those people because our jobs will not change. I have been doing this for 15 years and I will continue to do it,' he says before signing off, 'As creators, it's our job to say, 'Here's a story, let's see how many people it reaches.' That's what we need to focus on.'

'I don't ever want to lose Sonam and Dhanush," said Aanand L Rai; Revisiting 'Raanjhanaa' as 'Kuberaa' releases
In 2013, the movie 'Raanjhanaa' was not just a film; it was a cultural mood. Directed by 'Aanand L. Rai,' it introduced ' Dhanush ' to Hindi cinema and gave ' Sonam Kapoor ' one of her most emotionally layered roles. The film has reached its 12-year milestone. Kundan and Zoya The movie was set against the vibrant chaos of Banaras. 'Raanjhanaa' told the story of Kundan, played by Dhanush, a Hindu boy hopelessly in love with Zoya, portrayed by Sonam Kapoor, who was a Muslim girl with dreams far beyond her hometown. Their love was utterly messy, one-sided, and ultimately tragic but at the end felt real. Dhanush's vulnerability and Sonam's quiet strength made the film unforgettable. The film's recent 12-year anniversary was marked by a special screening in Mumbai, attended by Dhanush, director Aanand L. Rai, and other cast members. Though Sonam couldn't attend in person, she joined the celebration online, resharing clips and tributes that overflew social media. Rai's heartfelt words in an old interview with The Indian Express still resonate: 'I don't ever want to lose Sonam and Dhanush'—a statement to the rare chemistry and emotional depth they brought to the screen. From Kundan to Deva in ' Kuberaa ' Now in 2025, Dhanush returns to Hindi cinema with 'Kuberaa,' a socio-political thriller directed by 'Sekhar Kammula.' Released on June 20, the film sees him as Deva, a beggar caught in a chaos of corruption and class war. The film also stars 'Nagarjuna' and 'Rashmika Mandanna,' and is set to stream on OTT in July. While 'Kuberaa' is far from the romantic idealism of 'Raanjhanaa,' both films showcase Dhanush's ability to humanise the marginalised. His journey from Kundan's heartbreak to Deva's rebellion is a dual change in emotional storytelling. Legacy and Continuity What makes 'Raanjhanaa' effective is not just because of its music or visuals; it's the honesty between its leads emotionally. Sonam and Dhanush, though from different worlds of cinema, created a bond that was felt through the screen. As Rai once said, 'They gave me more than performances—they gave me their hearts.' With 'Kuberaa' now capturing headlines and 'Raanjhanaa' still being in the hearts of fans, it's clear that some collaborations are not just cinematic; they are a deep mark on the souls.
