Big wheel to return despite resident's plea

Big wheel to return despite resident's plea

Yahoo07-04-2025

An observation wheel in a public garden has been granted planning permission for another year despite a plea to give the park "back to the people".
Councillors at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) voted unanimously to allow the Royal Windsor Wheel in Alexandra Gardens.
Resident John Davey opposed the application, saying the garden should be "full of flowers, plants and wildlife" and "not forfeited to metal fairground rides".
But council planning officers said under the plans less than 5% of the total grassland would be damaged, and the site would be re-turfed afterwards.
They added that, when the wheel was in the park last summer, it left "plenty of garden area amenity area untouched by this development for members of the public".
Planning officer Briony Franklin also said the council had to be consistent in deciding planning applications, and had approved identical temporary plans last year.
Ward councillor Mark Wilson spoke in favour of the application and said it was an "attraction" for the town.
"It's a boost for business and while there are mixed views as we've heard from residents many do enjoy it," he said.
Councillor Amy Tisi said the wheel would take up about 0.5% of the park.
"It seems to be a very emotive thing that some residents say it's taking up all of the park and it's taking up all of this space," she said.
"I calculated that the site is 21 by 7m, so it works out to be 0.52% of the park is taken up by this."

Mom Sees Daughter Missing From Bed, Unprepared for Where She's Found—'Help'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A mom and dad had a moment of panic after going to check on their young daughter in her bed, only to find she was nowhere to be seen. Courtney Rey, from Lisbon in Portugal, took to her Instagram, @cbm, to share footage of the moment she and her husband discovered Romy, who was 2 at the time, missing from her bed. The video was filmed during a trip to Cape Town, South Africa, in December last year, when Rey was beginning the process of transitioning Romy from sleeping in a cot to sleeping in a bed. Rey told Newsweek she had been forced to begin the process at this particular point because Romy had "started crawling out of the crib." "The Airbnb hosts were kind enough to leave out both a crib and make up a queen bed in the same room, so we had both options during the transition time," Rey said. Parenting can be stressful at the best of times. In 2025 Cost of Care Report poll of 3,000 parents, 90 percent of respondents said they had lost sleep because of parenting stress, while the same proportion reported feeling burnt out. One of the biggest stresses Rey was facing as a parent happened after Romy was supposed to be sound asleep. In a somewhat apt development, switching over to a proper bed has seen Romy develop a habit of roaming around at night. "The temptation for Romy to escape her bed just because she physically can now often means we are hearing her door creak and having to walk her back to her bedroom multiple times a day for her nap or at night for bedtime," Rey said. It has led to some memorable days and nights, for good and bad reasons, like the one captured on camera during their Cape Town stay. That was the afternoon they went to check on Romy during her nap and realized she was nowhere to be found. "I saw on the monitor that she was not in the crib or bed, so ran in to check," Rey said. She added that her initial reaction after realizing Romy was missing was one of shock—but it didn't last. "First, there's a bit of fear," Rey said. "But we found her in the closet pretty quickly. The cupboard was open so it was pretty easy to spot her." Romy, in her half-asleep state, had chosen to climb inside a nearby closet with a duvet, creating a cozy spot for herself in the process and much to her mom's amusement. "Once I saw that she was safe in the cupboard, I thought it was the funniest thing ever and grabbed my phone and my husband," Rey said. Captioned "please help," the video went viral, much to Rey's surprise. "I just hope people get a laugh from it and realize that nothing is easy about being a parent, and being in it all together certainly makes it more manageable," she said. The good news is that Romy, who recently turned 3, has now fully graduated to a "big girl bed." "From Cape Town, we traveled on to Kenya where all of the beds have mosquito netting, and she loved this. It was such a great way to help with the transition as she felt secure below the netting and also like a princess," Rey said. Even so, Romy said she still likes to get in a crib every now and then. "If we travel, like to my parent's house and there's a crib, she does love to get back into it for old time's sake," Rey said. Just as long as Romy stays in there, of course.

Hiker trapped for 3 days after falling onto active Indonesian volcano

A massive rescue operation is underway after a hiker tumbled from a cliff next to the crater of an active Indonesian volcano, according to reports. Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 26, was hiking with a group when she disappeared at 6:30 a.m. local time Saturday around Mount Rinjani, the BBC reported. 3 Juliana Marins, 26, was hiking with a group Saturday morning when she fell off a cliff by a trail and plummeted down near the crater of Mount Rinjani. @julianamarins She then fell off a cliff surrounding a trail and plummeted next to the volcano's crater, the outlet reported. Rescuers heard 'screams for help' as drone footage from later Saturday showed her still alive and perched on grey soil, according to the outlet. But when a vertical rescue team tried to reach her nearly 1,000 feet below the cliff, Marins was nowhere to be found — and attempts to find her using a thermal drone were hampered by thick fog conditions surrounding the volcano. 3 Rescue efforts are underway to save Marins, who was reportedly last seen Monday, but could not be reached due to weather conditions. @julianamarins Marins was located again on Monday, even further below where she was originally perched. But, weather conditions stopped rescue efforts once again, according to a family-run Instagram account dedicated to saving the young hiker. Rescue teams were less than halfway toward reaching the hiker when they were forced to retreat, the account claimed. The account chronicling Marin, a tourist from Niterói who frequently posted pictures dancing and traveling, has accrued over 400,000 followers since word of her disappearance on Saturday. The family also slammed the park for allegedly remaining open and allowing hikers to use the same trail that Marins walked on when she tumbled near the crater. 'While Juliana is NEEDING HELP! We don't know the state of her health! She still has no water, food, or warm clothes for three days,' the account wrote. 3 Marins family and rescuers have taken to social media to chronicle her rescue. @agam_rinjani Comments have flooded drone videos and photos posted by rescuers attempting to reach Marins. 'We are very grateful for your help, and we know you are doing this at great risk and with all your heart. We, Brazilians, are praying and we truly appreciate your support,' one commenter said. Marin's family contacted the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta, which is mediating contact with the company responsible for the tour by the volcano, Brazil TV reported. 'As of now, the evacuation process is still ongoing. Authorities urge all climbers to remain vigilant and thoroughly prepare before attempting the Rinjani trek,' Mount Rinjani National Park said in a statement on Instagram.

No weights, no problem — this is the 15-minute no-equipment workout I'm doing to keep up my strength training on holiday

When I go on holiday, working out isn't a priority for me. However, I do like to give myself the option, so I often pack a pair of my best running shoes into my luggage for either a run or a quick visit to the hotel gym. I'm heading to Portugal next week and staying in a rental apartment, so with no gym available, I've been on the hunt for a no-equipment strength workout I can do from anywhere. One trainer who never lets me down when I need a quick and effective home-friendly workout is Kayla Itsines. With nearly 16 million Instagram followers, I know I'm not the only one who loves her content. That's where I came across her travel-friendly full-body workout, and it went straight into my saved posts. It includes six moves performed across three sets, which might sound like a lot, but the full routine only takes 15 minutes to complete. I gave it a test run before packing and found it quick, effective and surprisingly energizing. As I'm an early riser. Even on holiday, I'll likely be doing this routine out on the balcony before everyone else wakes up. That said, it's the kind of workout you could easily squeeze in during a midday siesta or before heading out for dinner. If you're heading somewhere warm and planning to keep up your running, the Saucony Triumph SG is a great pick. It's lightweight, breathable, and has a quick-pull lacing system that makes it easy to slip on and go. A post shared by KAYLA ITSINES (@kayla_itsines) A photo posted by on There are six exercises involved, all demonstrated by Itsines in the post above. It's worth watching her video so you can note the correct form. Each exercise is listed below. You'll spend 30 seconds on each move, so make sure to do this on each side for the unilateral exercises and don't forget to do all three rounds. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Itsines' routine is proof that you don't need a gym or a lot of time to get a solid full-body workout in. With six simple bodyweight moves repeated across three rounds, it targets your major muscle groups and gets your heart rate up in just 15 minutes. You'll kick things off with double-pulse sumo squats, a lower-body move that works your inner thighs and glutes while building strength and stability in your hips. Then it's into glute kickbacks and fire hydrants, which isolate the glutes and help improve balance, especially since you'll be working one side at a time. The commando and hover-to-plank combo brings in upper-body strength and core control, challenging your shoulders, arms and abs. Finally, ab bikes round things off with a burst of core work that also gives your obliques some attention. While it's quick, this type of session helps you build functional strength — the kind you use in everyday movements like climbing stairs, bending, or carrying things. As it's bodyweight-based, you're not just building muscle, but also working on your balance, mobility and endurance. The combination of core activation, unilateral work (where you focus on one side at a time) and full-body engagement means you're training in a balanced way that can help reduce injury risk and support long-term strength goals, too.
