at every five-kilometre stretch across the capital.
The upcoming policy, expected to replace the current one, which was extended until mid-July, also aims to promote
battery swapping facilities
and offer attractive incentives for retrofitting EV kits and scrapping older vehicles.
An official said that govt was also planning an EV corridor in the next policy. He added that the corridor could be alongside Outer Ring Road, considering its status as one of the city's most congested thoroughfares linking key destinations. He further stated that the charging stations would be strategically positioned beneath flyovers and on vacant plots to avoid disrupting traffic flow. The design will incorporate entry and exit points carefully planned to ensure minimal disturbance to motorists.
The official said that the idea was to brand this as a route where finding an EV charging station would be easy. This will offset the range anxiety seen among new EV buyers. "This stretch also has several residential areas along its circular length."
Officials said the revamped EV strategy would prioritise employment generation, targeting the creation of at least 20,000 jobs. "The establishment of a dense charging network and battery swapping ecosystem will be at the heart of this job drive," a senior govt official said.
Since its introduction in 2020, Delhi's EV policy has played a pivotal role in pushing the city towards cleaner transport. It offers a wide range of subsidies, including ₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity (up to ₹30,000) for electric two-wheelers, ₹30,000 for e-rickshaws and e-carts, and ₹5,500 or 25 per cent of the cost for e-cycles. The current EV policy, introduced in 2020, has received multiple extensions, the latest one for three months after April 15, 2025. The policy offers a range of incentives, including a 25 per cent purchase subsidy (up to ₹5,500) for e-cycles, ₹30,000 for e-rickshaws and e-carts, ₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity (capped at ₹30,000) for two-wheelers, and ₹30,000 for e-light commercial vehicles.
Officials said that looking ahead to 2027, govt was aiming to achieve 95 per cent electric vehicles among all new registrations, leading to a substantial reduction in urban pollution levels. The plan focuses on establishing comprehensive accessibility to charging stations and battery exchange facilities across the region.
Recently, Delhi govt had also withdrawn a recommendation of the draft EV policy, which suggested the elimination of CNG autos and fossil fuel-powered two-wheelers in the coming years. The draft proposal suggested phasing out CNG-powered three-wheelers and replacing them with electric autos by Aug 2025. Similarly, it also suggested that petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheeler registration won't be allowed from Aug 15, 2026. However, transport minister Pankaj Singh said there was no plan to make it binding for CNG autos to shift to electric or put any restriction on bikes.

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned the replacement of eight aging cattle-catching vehicles with newly designed, CNG-powered alternatives. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency and support the city's green initiatives. The civic agency has set aside 2.56 crore for the new vehicles. Cattle roaming in public areas not only pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians but also contribute to frequent traffic congestion, particularly in densely populated and commercial zones. Currently, GCC operates 20 specially fabricated vehicles equipped with hydraulic lifts to manage such situations. However, eight of these vehicles have been in continuous operation for over 10 years and are now beyond economical repair, officials said. "Additionally, diesel engines contribute to urban air pollution. Administration is now exploring cleaner alternatives," said a senior GCC official. During the budget session, the mayor announced that the civic body will procure CNG vehicles for cattle. Each of the new CNG vehicles is estimated to cost 32 lakh, bringing the total project cost for all eight units to 2.56 crore. The city gas distribution (CGD) sector is at the core of India's energy transition, with compressed natural gas , in particular, poised for significant growth, according to a report by Crisil Intelligence. This projected growth, according to Crisil, will be powered by government thrust, urban mobility demand, and expanding infrastructure. With more than 18,000 CNG stations proposed and 12 crore households unlocked through licensing rounds, the momentum remains strong. "With the top states continuing to anchor demand, the next phase of growth should come from new geographies, backed by evolving gas-allocation patterns, private investments and aggressive vehicle conversion trends," the Crisil report titled 'City Gas Pulse' read. On the other hand, the competitive intensity is rising, exclusivity periods are closing, and infrastructure gaps are being bridged selectively. City Gas Pulse provides a sharp, state-wise and player-wise view of CNG demand evolution, infrastructure rollout, investment concentration and market readiness. CNG is becoming the focal point of India's energy mix and the city gas distribution (CGD) sector's growth as the country works towards achieving a 15 per cent share in the primary energy mix for natural gas. According to Crisil, expansion of geographical areas and the increasing demand for cleaner mobility position CNG as a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional fuels. "Regional infrastructure development and readiness play a significant role in enabling wider gas access amid a shift in market focus to electric vehicles," read the report. "CNG remains competitive despite evolving allocation and pricing pressure," it added. India meets a sizable portion of its energy needs through fossil fuels, and various renewable energy sources and relatively cleaner energy sources are seen as an avenue to reduce dependence on conventional sources of power. Green energy for climate mitigation is not just a focus area for India; it has gained momentum globally. At COP26 held in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part "Panchamrit" pledge. They included reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. India as a whole also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070.

It also stated that on average, a modern electric vehicle's battery degrades by 1.8 per cent every year, which results in most of the EV batteries lasting 20 years or more. These findings defy the concept of the majority of people who believe that EV batteries don't last more than a couple of years. The study has revealed that an EV battery loses 1.8 per cent of the original range every year, which is something not a dealbreaker for anyone buying an electric car. It further stated that, after 20 years, if nothing goes extremely wrong, the EV owner can still enjoy 64 per cent of an electric vehicle's original range. Geotab claims to have arrived at this conclusion after analysing more than 10,000 electric vehicles. According to another study, electric vehicles made in the last decade have a battery failure rate of less than 0.5 per cent. EV battery degradation is not linear Electric vehicles' battery degradation is not a linear process. It depends on multiple factors. Temperature, location, driving pattern, charging technology, and charging frequency impact on the lifespan of the battery.
