Myanmar junta battles guerillas for control of jade hub
AI- Generated Image
YANGON: Myanmar's junta and anti-coup guerillas battled over the country's jade mining hub Friday, a combatant and a local said, displacing desperate civilians as they vied for supplies of the precious stone.
Myanmar has been consumed by a many-sided civil war since a 2021 coup toppled the democratic government, with the myriad of fighting factions plundering the nation's vast natural resources to fill their coffers.
Jade is considered auspicious in Chinese culture and high-quality stones can fetch astronomical sums in the neighbouring country.
Fighting has raged during a Myanmar military offensive around villages and mining sites in Hpakant township of northern Kachin state, according to Naw Bu, spokesman of the Kachin Independence Army battling the junta in the area.
"They came to the jade mining areas of some companies and they burned down trucks and destroyed other things," he added. "They intended to stop our income from jade mining."
AFP was not able to verify the claim and a spokesman for Myanmar's junta could not be reached for comment.
Battles in the area began around three weeks ago but continued in the early hours of Friday, Naw Bu said.
A local resident who asked to remain anonymous said around 15 civilians had been killed since May 28 and "some residents didn't dare to stay in the combat zone and have been displaced".

As Myanmar's civil war enters its fifth year, more than 3.5 million people in the Southeast Asian country of around 50 million are currently displaced, according to United Nations figures.
Kachin state hosts the largest jade deposits in the world according to geologists.
Myanmar also has a huge and loosely-regulated mining sector for gold, rubies and rare earth minerals which has flourished in the war.
China is also a key market for rare earth minerals, where they are used in electric vehicles the country is producing at prodigious rates.

Putin says 'the whole of Ukraine is ours' in theory, may take city of Sumy
President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russians and Ukrainians were one people, "and in that sense the whole of Ukraine is ours," and said he did not rule out Russia taking control of the Ukrainian city of Sumy. But Putin, speaking at an international economic forum in St Petersburg, said Russia had never doubted Ukraine's right to sovereignty, but noted that when Ukraine declared its independence in 1991 it was as a "neutral state". Putin, who says Russia is fighting in Ukraine to protect its own security, was answering a question about Russia's war aims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1941-1979 Receive 12+ Benefits This Month if They Ask USWalletSaver Learn More Undo "We have a saying, or a parable," Putin said. Rajnath Singh likely to visit China next week for SCO meet
New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to travel to China next week to attend a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), people familiar with the matter said on Friday. It will be the first visit to China by a senior Indian minister after the ties came under severe strain following the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh that began in May 2020. New Delhi and Beijing are in the process of finalising Singh's visit to China, the people said. The SCO defence ministers' conclave is scheduled to be held in Qingdao from June 25 to 27. It is learnt that Singh may hold a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the SCO conclave. Live Events China is hosting the meeting in its capacity as the current chair of the SCO. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, and a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points, Demchok and Depsang, under an agreement struck on October 21, 2024. In December, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Beijing and held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi under the framework of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary dispute. The decision to revive the SR mechanism and other such dialogue formats was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok. PTI Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
