BMTC's UPI revenues beat expectations, nearing 50%

BENGALURU: BMTC's QR-code-based UPI revenue has crossed the bus corporation's expectations and is almost nearing 50 per cent of the total revenue.
'The bus corporation, when it launched the UPI service only aimed to touch 30 per cent of the revenue through the UPI. However, now the revenue through UPI is nearing 50 per cent,' BMTC chief traffic manager G T Prabhakar Reddy said.
In the initial weeks after BMTC rolled out the QR-based ticketing, it faced a lot of resistance from the conductors. Even though people were willing to make payments for the tickets through the QR codes, conductors refused to accept them and insisted on only cash payments. Reddy said that they had to conduct training programmes for their conductors about UPI, how to accept it and how to confirm if the payment is made or not and then issue the tickets.
He attributed the increase in revenue to conductor training and the embracement of UPI by BMTC passengers, as they need to worry about providing the exact ticket amount.
Reddy shared the revenue through UPI and said, 'BMTC's daily ticket revenue is around Rs 3 crore. In January, the monthly UPI payments stood at Rs 10 crore, jumped to Rs 19 crore in February, Rs 21 crore in March and Rs 24 crore in April. In May, the payment set a new record with Rs 29.5 crore.' In May, the revenue through UPI was 42 per cent. He also informed that in June the revenue will cross 45 per cent.

SECI set to finalise tender for 7,24,000 tonne green ammonia production annually

Agencies Green hydrogen (Representational Image) State-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) is set to finalise a tender for production and supply of 7,24,000 tonne of green ammonia annually across 13 fertilizer plants under Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition scheme. Ammonia, an essential component in urea and other nitrogen-based fertilizers, is currently produced using fossil fuels, leading to high greenhouse gas emissions. SECI's tender leverages renewable energy to produce green hydrogen and ammonia, promoting low-emission, domestic fertilizer production. SECI will anchor demand aggregation and sign long-term offtake agreements, providing producers with market certainty over a 10-year contract period. The tender was issued on June 7, 2024 and the last date for bid submission is June 26, 2025. To ensure financial viability, the government is offering financial incentives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with Production Linked Incentives (PLI) of Rs 8.82/kg, Rs 7.06/kg, and Rs 5.30/kg for the first three years respectively- amounting to a total support of Rs 1,533.4 crore. A robust Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) is also committed by the Centre to de-risk potential payment delays from fertilizer companies. India consumes approximately 17-19 million tonnes of ammonia annually, with more than 50 per cent of its hydrogen requirement used in fertilizer production. However, most of this is derived from imported natural gas. SECI's initiative is expected to drastically cut this dependence, reduce exposure to global gas price fluctuations, and lower the trade deficit. Producing green hydrogen emits less than 2 kg of CO₂ per kilogram, compared to up to 12 kg CO₂ from conventional grey hydrogen.

Ankur Warikoo shares how his salary increased from Rs 3 LPA to Rs 33 LPA in 5 years

Entrepreneur and author Ankur Warikoo shared a reflective post this week, mapping his growth from a PhD dropout to one of the top hires on campus. He also revealed how his salary increased from Rs 3 LPA to Rs 33 LPA in just five years. In the now-viral post on LinkedIn, he recalled how, at the age of 24, he returned to India from the US, uncertain about the future and in urgent need of a first salary was just Rs 14,746 a month. 'I got my first job at 24, earning Rs 14,746 per month. At 26, I was earning 12 lakh per annum. At 29, 33 lakh per annum,' Warikoo said. With no MBA, no network, and limited exposure, Warikoo knocked on doors, newspaper ads, walk-in interviews, referrals, until he landed a role at NIS Sparta. 'Here's how it happened: At 24, I dropped out of my PhD in the US and came back to India. With no plans and no visibility over my future, I needed financial stability.I had to get a job,' he said. He added, 'I tapped into my (limited) network, applied through newspaper ads, and went for walk-in interviews. After 45 days, I appeared for the final round of NIS Sparta. They asked me what my salary expectations were,' Warikoo said, adding, 'I had no idea what to ask for. They offered me Rs 15K in hand—more than I expected'.advertisementBut soon, he realised his limitations. Colleagues with management degrees had a stronger grasp on the work. That's when he came across ISB, a one-year MBA programme, albeit with a hefty price tag. The loan would become his family's first ever. 'I asked myself, can I land a job post-MBA that pays me at least Rs 35K a month? The data said yes. So I took the bet.'From struggling to break into the top consulting shortlist to eventually cracking ATKearney, Warikoo's climb was anything but straightforward. 'I bombed my BCG interview. Fumbled in ATK's second round, too. But someone gave me another chance. I gave it everything.'He landed the job with a package of Rs 12 lakh per annum, and in just 18 months, became the firm's fastest-promoted employee. By the time he left in 2009, he was earning Rs 33 lakh a concluded his post with a lesson that resonated with several users: 'I reached where I did because people bet on me. I stayed grateful and worked hard. If someone takes a bet on you, double down. On yourself.'Take a look at the post here: Social media users praised the honesty in his story. 'When someone bets on you, the best thing you can do is outwork their expectations,' a user said, while another added, 'The humility, the grit, the way you respected every opportunity, it's the kind of story we don't hear enough.'advertisement'All it takes is one chance. And the determination to make it count,' said one of the users. PhonePe eyes $1.5 billion IPO, draft papers likely by early August

PhonePe, India's leading digital payments platform and a subsidiary of Walmart Inc, is preparing to file for an initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to $1.5 billion. The move would value the fintech firm at approximately $15 billion, according to a report by Bloomberg. The fintech aims to submit its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), a preliminary filing required by Indian regulators, by early August. However, the plan remains fluid and subject to change, as the discussions are still ongoing. To manage the IPO, PhonePe has enlisted the services of top investment banks, including Kotak Mahindra Capital, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley. Founded in 2015, PhonePe has grown to become the dominant player on India's real-time payment system: Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The platform boasts over 610 million registered users and processes daily transactions worth around ₹340 million. In 2023, the company secured $100 million in funding from Ribbit Capital, Tiger Global Management, and TVS Capital Funds, with a valuation of $12 billion at that time. UPI transactions hit a record high in May 2025, clocking 18.68 billion in volume and ₹25.14 trillion in value, marking a 4 per cent rise in volume and 5 per cent in value over April. Leading the pack, PhonePe processed 8.68 billion transactions worth ₹12.56 trillion, accounting for nearly half of the total UPI activity. Google Pay followed with 6.74 billion transactions and ₹8.85 trillion in value, while Paytm trailed with 1.27 billion transactions. Together, PhonePe and Google Pay handled over 80 per cent of UPI transactions. PhonePe maintained its dominance both in volume and value, strengthening its position as it gears up for an IPO. PhonePe had originally been incorporated in Singapore but shifted its legal domicile to India in 2022. This move has been believed to be done in anticipation of its public filing in India. Earlier this month, the company added Zarin Daruwala to its board. Daruwala, the former CEO of Standard Chartered Bank India, led the bank from 2016 and previously held senior leadership roles at ICICI Bank, where she oversaw the wholesale banking division. PhonePe's board features a mix of global and Indian business leaders, including Walmart executives John David Rainey, Donna Morris, and Leigh Hopkins; TeamLease Services vice-chairman Manish Sabharwal; former Indian bureaucrat Tarun Bajaj; PhonePe chairman Rohit Bhagat; and the platform's co-founders Sameer Nigam and Rahul Chari.
