Pact Group and BlockTexx Partner on Fashion Recycling in Australia

Yahoo11-03-2025

Plastic recycler and packaging manufacturer Pact Group has teamed with textile recycling technology company BlockTexx to develop garment recycling operations for fashion brands and retailers in Australia.
The two Australia-based companies signed a memorandum of understanding to determine the feasibility of creating an end-to-end solution for discarded polyester and cotton-blend clothing. The operation would include collection, sorting and pre-processing used garments, then recycling poly-cotton, polyester and cotton pieces into raw materials. Those materials could then be converted into yarn for new clothing, non-food-grade plastic packaging or other applications.

According to Seamless, an Australian clothing stewardship initiative, the country's garment industry manufactures and imports around 1.4 billion items of new clothing each year. Most of those items are made with non-renewable materials, and more than half of those garments end up in landfills, accounting for 200,000 metric tons of waste annually.
Pact and BlockTexx each bring specialized expertise in recycling to the collaboration. Through its Retail Accessories division, Pact collects and redistributes used plastic hangers from retail stores to garment and accessory suppliers for reuse or recycling.
'Pact's existing presence in the global fashion supply chain through our Retail Accessories business enables us to expand our expertise across the garment supply chain beyond just hangers,' said Sanjay Dayal, CEO of Pact. 'This initiative with BlockTexx demonstrates our commitment to leading the circular economy through partnerships and collaboration to offer sustainable solutions for our customers.'
Polyester recycling has proved difficult for the fashion industry to take on for several reasons, one being that most clothing containing the material is blended with other fibers such as cotton, making it harder to separate the polyester for recycling. Often, polyester goes through chemical treatments and finishes that can also interfere with recycling.
BlocTexx developed a chemical recycling process for hard-to-recycle polyester and cotton blends, and currently recycles textiles at its facility near Brisbane for use in new clothing and agricultural applications, among other uses.
Through this partnership, the two companies will conduct a feasibility study to assess Australia's garment collection supply chain, the technical requirements necessary to meet BlockTexx's recycling process and the suitability of using the resulting recycled raw materials in Pact's packaging products and other applications. Pact and BlockTexx said they hope to complete that study this year.
'This project aims to accelerate the fashion industry's shift toward more sustainable products by combining Pact's capabilities in sustainable retail supply chains with BlockTexx's textile recycling innovations,' said Adrian Jones, co-founder of BlockTexx. 'This could enable businesses in the fashion and textiles sector to transition to more sustainable and circular practices and assist in the reduction of CO-2 emissions and prevent unwearable textiles from going to landfill, both here and overseas.'

Budget to entice companies to invest in major projects

A multi-million dollar innovation fund is expected to make Australia's most populous state a more attractive place to invest and start a business. The 2025/26 NSW budget, to be handed down on Tuesday, will allocate nearly $80 million in funding to make the state the best place to innovate, connect with investors and scale a business. The funding includes $38.5 million for Australia's largest technology and innovation hub, Tech Central, and $20 million for emerging technology commercialisation to help boost growth in the housing and energy sectors. In 2024, NSW accounted for 65 per cent of Australia venture capital investment, and is home to five out of eight "unicorn" companies, privately held companies valued at over $1 billion. Tuesday's budget will also include $17 million to set up an Investment Delivery Authority. The authority will be tasked with helping to accelerate approvals for major projects across all industries, including advanced technologies and energy. Major projects to be considered by the authority may include hotels, data centres, renewable energy projects and commercial developments. Too many major projects from the private sector were getting bogged down in red tape, Premier Chris Minns said. "Our state is open for business and this change will encourage more people to bring their best ideas to life in NSW, all backed by our government," he said. Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the government was creating a way to address blockages, speed up the process and ensure NSW was properly open for business. "The Investment Delivery Authority is the turbocharger to drive economic growth across the state," he said.

Weber Grill Restaurant to be first tenant in Orland Park downtown development

Weber Grill Restaurant will open a location in Orland Park next year, becoming the first tenant announced for the village's downtown development project northwest of La Grange Road and 143rd Street. The company is owned by the same family that makes the grills, which are used to prepare meals at the restaurants. Weber Grill will build an 8,500-square-foot space at the southwest corner of La Grange and 142nd Street, said Ramzi Hassan, president of Edwards Realty Co. Orland Park-based Edwards was selected by the village to develop that has been called the Main Street Triangle project. 'This is exactly the type of tenant we envisioned when we first imagined downtown Orland Park,' Hassan said in a news release announcing the restaurant's plans. 'Weber Grill represents a high-quality, experience-driven restaurant that aligns perfectly with our vision to create a dynamic, walkable destination for the community.' Planned to open next spring, the restaurant will feature indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a hands-on cooking school offering both public and private cooking classes, according to Weber Grill Restaurants. The company also has restaurants in downtown Chicago and suburban locations in Lombard and Schaumburg. 'We're thrilled to bring the unique Weber Grill experience to the new downtown Orland Park,' Jon Crost, chief operating officer of Weber Grill Restaurants, said in a news release. 'This location allows us to connect with a vibrant and growing community while being part of a visionary redevelopment that emphasizes both quality and community.' Hassan said Friday that Weber 'is a really good brand that's a household name,' and its decision to open in Orland Park could attract other tenants. He said that Weber was looking to the Orland Park market for a restaurant, but 'they were more interested in the type of development they are joining.' 'They had to find the right fit,' Hassan said. He said Edwards has been very selective about the users and businesses coming in to the development, and said the Weber Grill Restaurant could be destination drawing customers from beyond the Orland Park area. 'It's not like they have 300 restaurants all over the country,' Hassan said. Edwards plans to develop more than 140,000 square feet of entertainment, retail and office space. No residential space is planned. An expansion of Crescent Park, to be renamed Heroes Park, is included, and what is now a stormwater detention pond in the northeast corner of the triangle would be enhanced with fountains. The company and village held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the downtown project in March. Edwards owns and operates Orland Park Crossing, a retail center northeast of La Grange and 143rd, directly to the east of the downtown development. The downtown development would be situated around the Ninety7Fifty on the Park apartments, University of Chicago Medicine Center for Advanced Care, a parking garage and the 143rd Street Metra station. Hassan said he expects Edwards to break ground in spring on space for a second tenant, which would be on a site west of La Grange on the south side of 142nd.
