Port Saint John partners looking to diversity imports

CTV News04-06-2025

You may soon see more then just shipping containers being unloaded at Port Saint John.
DP World, who operates the six container cranes along the city's waterfront, confirmed to CTV in an email they are exploring the possibility of adding car imports to Saint John operations. The topic came up last week during Port Days 2025, an annual event held by the port to share its direction with key stakeholders.
Port President and C.E.O. Craig Bell Estabrooks says DP World and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Railway want to diversity their operations.
'We built this infrastructure years ago to be multipurpose,' Bell Estabrooks says. 'So yes, containers are our focus. They're going to continue to be the main focus, but if we could move some other commodities with DP world and other partners like autos, that's a real opportunity.'
Bell Estabrooks says DP World would likely start small when it comes to moving automobiles to see how manageable it is and what the business model would look like before making a full commitment. CTV has reached out to DP World for more information about the prospect of bringing car imports to the city and are awaiting their response.
Estabrooks said it's not just car imports that could be added to the port's growing capabilities.
'The other big one is around breakbulk,' says Bell Estabrooks. 'Importing Brazilian eucalyptus and from a wood pulp standpoint, that can be blended with existing forest products in New Brunswick and potentially even further than just New Brunswick.'
Despite a busy start to the year, including the addition of two container cranes and breaking ground for a new cold storage unit to be run by Americold, Bell Estabrooks says there is still a lot on the port's agenda. Continued rail upgrades top the list.
Bell Estabrooks says he would like to double, if not triple the tracks out of the port to Bayshore where there is a switching facility. He says Americold's addition to the waterfront has spurred conversation around food processing and refrigerated goods.
'I think food is one of the big opportunities for us,' he says.
Estabrooks says there is not a lot of space available on port property but there is still plenty of opportunity for growth. He says DP World added more equipment to its arsenal to help load and unload ships faster and improve the flow of goods through the terminals.
'We're dreaming much bigger than we did a decade ago,' says Estabrooks. 'It's really because of what our partners are telling us. So we always look at the port as we provide really good infrastructure. We provide really good services and operational model with the employees that we have and then we just let the private sector do the development.'
Estabrooks says the port hasn't processed hundreds of thousands of tons of breakbulk in the way they are proposing since the late 1990s and there is potential in the energy sector. He says meeting two or three of them in place would be a tremendous success.

‘It looks amazing': Restoration of 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertible for Princess Elizabeth tour finished

One of the 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertibles that Canada bought for Princess Elizabeth's tour is seen on June 21, 2025, after being restored by students at NAIT in Edmonton. (Galen McDougall / CTV News Edmonton) One of the 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertibles that Canada bought for Princess Elizabeth's tour that year has been restored to its former glory. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology students who did the work over this school year revealed it to owner Ron Lyons on Saturday. 'I was flabbergasted. It looks amazing,' Lyons said in an interview with CTV News Edmonton. 'I think the kids in the program here did an amazing job restoring it and invested a lot of time and effort. It turned out beautiful.' According to NAIT auto body instructor Ryan Pomedli, the car was one of 60 the Canadian government bought for the future queen. Lyons, owner of the Legends Golf and Country Club east of Edmonton, purchased it in 2024 for the club's Golf Car Museum. Having worked with NAIT to restore other vehicles for some 20 years, he was familiar with the caliber of work done by the NAIT program – yet still impressed by the students' latest efforts. (Galen McDougall / CTV News Edmonton) 'My car was in pretty decent shape when I first got it, but they took it up to another level – like, to an elite level.' Of entrusting his restoration projects to NAIT, Lyons added, 'It's not really the past, it's the future, right?' 'Having good, safe vehicles and properly repaired, and all that is important to the industry… At NAIT, the kids are properly trained. They're respectful. They have a beautiful, clean shop. They have the best equipment. They have the best instructors. And there's 80 of them going out into the industry and making the car industry safer.' One of those students, second-year Beverly Burke, was one of the last to work on the convertible. Her group sandblasted and painted the wheels. 'It's a once in a lifetime opportunity,' she said. 'Cars built in the 1950s, they don't build them like they do now.' Lyons plans on showing off the project at a few shows this summer before putting it on display at his club's museum. He told CTV News Edmonton, 'I have a nice spot for this. It's gonna have its own little bay.' With files from CTV News Edmonton's Galen McDougall

Vancouver lawyer suspended for submitting false documents in support of client's $3.3M loan application

A Vancouver lawyer has admitted to improperly notarizing documents and solemnly declaring affidavits that contained information he knew was false in order to help a corporate client secure a $3.3-million loan from a U.S. bank. Jason Chieh-Sheng Wang admitted his misconduct in a consent agreement with the Law Society of B.C., a summary of which was published online last week. According to the document, Wang was retained by 'a group of companies' in April 2023 to facilitate the loan application. 'Upon being retained, the lawyer was advised that the client was in difficult financial circumstances, and that it wished to obtain a loan from the lender on an urgent basis,' the summary reads. The loan was secured by 'five pieces of artwork as collateral,' according to the document. None of the parties involved in the situation – other than Wang himself – are named in the consent agreement summary. Instead, the document uses parties' initials. 'The loan was personally guaranteed by ZYZ and JM, whose respective families held the majority of the shares of the client,' the document reads. 'The loan also required the approval of their respective spouses, YP and LW, documented by spousal consents.' The lender told Wang it needed the spousal consent forms – along with other documents prepared in the U.S. – notarized, something the lawyer said would be impractical because some of the parties whose signatures were required were located in China. The bank eventually agreed that Wang could notarize the signatures in question via video call. Wang 'purported to notarize' four documents on May 15, 2023, but he had not actually met the signatories via video call, or at all, according to the consent agreement summary. The lawyer also created three affidavits in which he swore that the signatories had joined him on a video call and shown him both sides of their government-issued photo IDs before signing the documents. 'The lawyer solemnly declared the contents of the affidavits of execution to be true when he knew that he had not met with any of the signatories … via video conference or at all, and had not witnessed any of their signatures,' the summary reads. Wang also admitted to deleting WeChat messages he had exchanged with the client's representatives, in which he agreed to proceed with notarizing the documents without the requisite video call. 'The lawyer knew or ought to have known that deleting this client correspondence was contrary to his obligation to maintain and preserve his client's files and records," the summary reads. For all of this admitted misconduct, Wang agreed to serve a one-month suspension, which began on June 16. In accepting the consent agreement, the law society's discipline panel considered three mitigating factors:
