Our readers' guide for the perfect St. Louis road trip

Axios07-03-2025

Spring break is almost here for thousands of Middle Tennessee students.
Why it matters: Schools in Davidson, Williamson, Wilson and Sumner counties are among the many that will be closed next week. That means many families will be hitting the road.
State of play: We've written about plenty of convenient vacation options for Nashville families over the years, but one location in particular seemed to inspire and delight our readers.
🏆 The winner: St. Louis, Missouri. Nashville apparently loves the Gateway City.
When we wrote about our plans for a team road trip to STL, we got flooded with enthusiastic recommendations.
Here are our readers' top picks.
🍦 Ted Drewes Frozen Custard: This St. Louis institution was by far the most-referenced attraction. The custard is so thick you can flip it upside down without losing a drop.
Virginia K. said the dessert staple is an "absolute can't miss."
"It tastes best in a Cardinal hat but it's good in a paper cup too."
🛝 City Museum, which Richard S. calls "an all-ages architectural playground." He means that literally.
You really need to see it to believe it. There are more than 30 slides for kids and adults, including some that twist all the way down from the roof; a vintage 1940 Ferris wheel; underground tunnels; and the world's largest pencil.
🐅 Forest Park, which David L. describes as "the St. Louis version of NYC's Central Park." (It's actually bigger than Central Park.)
Attractions include a free zoo, multiple museums and world-class musical theater presented outdoors.
🍕 St. Louis pizza is unlike any other pie you've tried. It's served on a thin, crispy crust with sweet tomato sauce. But the defining feature is the polarizing Provel cheese, a mixture of cheddar, Swiss and provolone.
Readers are split on the best place to try some. Imo's is a local giant, but Marjorie P. suggests Pirrone's Pizzeria in Florissant.
🍝 The Hill is an Italian neighborhood loaded with authentic cuisine, including the local delicacy, toasted ravioli.
🍔 Blueberry Hill serves what many Axios Nashville readers consider the city's best burger.
The intrigue: That's just a small sample. So many emails came in, we briefly thought we'd been hacked.
💭 Adam's thought bubble: I went to Saint Louis University in the 2000s, so I thought my Missouri bona fides were strong. But I was no match for our readers. We have several passionate STL stans in our midst.

What the food is like on a Viking Cruises ocean ship

Viking Cruises may be a luxury cruise line, but it offers laid-back luxury, at least when it comes to dining. The actual number of choices is fairly limited. There's "The Restaurant," essentially the Main Dining Room, and World Cafe, a buffet, which bother offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Those are supported by a small grill near the pool, Mamsen's, a unique Nordic-inspired spot which offers waffles, pastries, and other snacks, and a small selection of cookies, pastries, and sandwiches on the first floor at the bar in The Living Room. There's also an Italian specialty restaurants Manfredi's that's open for a dinner and a Chef's Table that serves a fixed menu which changes every three days, It's all very high quality and elegant, but also pretty chill as dress standards are casual, and you don't need reservations at The Restaurant. You won't go hungry, but you also won't find yourself regretting your dining decisions as there's much more fresh fish, chilled seafood, and nightly sushi than on many mass market cruise lines. You can eat well while staying relatively healthy (although the excellent gelato was a nightly temptation). Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. What the food is like on a Viking Cruises ocean ship (2:20) Transcript: Hey there, cruisers. I am Dan Kline, Executive Editor of Come Cruise With Me. That is And I'm coming to you from my cabin in Viking Jupiter. Things are a little bit different in Viking, and I thought I would want to talk a little bit today about what the food is like. So it's not quite as expansive as if you're on a megaship. There aren't as many places to eat. But basically, there's a main dining room that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner. You do not have to make an appointment. You don't need a time. You can just show up. It might take a minute or two. There is a buffet that does breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not quite as expansive, but absolutely top-notch. I actually think some of the best food on the ship. Dinner time, not only is there the buffet, which has many of the things the main dining room does, there's also the main dining room, which changes every night. There's an Italian specialty restaurant also included. You just have to make a reservation. And there's a chef's table. The chef's table is a different four-course meal every night. You really want to look at the menu before you go, because it's very specific. There's no substitutions other than for allergies. But everything is world-class. I would say the worst thing on the buffet is as good as any specialty restaurant I've ever been in. And there are things like king crab, shrimp cocktail, sushi every night for dinner. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise. There's also Mamsen's, which is a sort of Norwegian specialty snack place. And there's sandwiches and waffles and pastries. And it's a little bit weird. There's also tea every day at 4 o'clock, which is a drawn-out British affair. Have done it a couple of times. Absolutely lovely. And there's cookies and pastry on the first floor all day long. So it's not as much as you would eat on another wall. You'll eat plenty. It's not as many choices as the other cruise lines have. But it is all absolutely world-class. We got to tour the galley today. And honestly, I would have eaten off the floor. It was how unbelievably clean it was. And the chef tastes every meal himself. So literally goes through, tastes every single thing they have. They make every day. Chef said to me that he has not been hungry in many, many months. And he does not remember the feeling of being hungry because he has to taste so much food every day. But if you want to come on Viking, food is one of the calling cards. They pick up local ingredients in every market. And they'll do one dish. So we had Aberdeen beef the other day. They usually pick up mussels in one of the stops we were in. But they're actually out of them. That is, of course, the perils of going local. I am Dan Kline. Come cruise with me soon. I know I'm getting older, but at the same time, I still feel like I got a lot that I can prove in this league … It really wasn't that hard of a decision for me.'

Can you bring your dog to the mall? Here's what the rules say in South Florida

One of South Florida's biggest malls is a big fan of your dogs. Aventura Mall, ranked as the most popular mall in the country, not only welcomes dogs to stroll with their humans, it even offers two dog parks. 'The guest is at the heart of the experience, and that means their best friends, too.' mall management said in a statement to the Miami Herald. The mall, at Northeast 195th Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Northeast Miami-Dade, features dog hydration stations, pet relief areas, dog-friendly patios, and of course those pet parks. David Moskowitz, owner of Broward Bark, a local newsletter for pet owners, said businesses benefit when they're pet-friendly. 'Being able to bring them along to pet-friendly places makes errands fun,' he said. 'It also benefits retailers. Shoppers tend to stay longer since they're not rushing home to let their dogs out, by visiting more stores.' The dog rules at the mall Despite the welcoming atmosphere, there are still dog rules at Aventura Mall. And those rules listed on signs. Dogs must be accompanied by a human 18 or older. They have to stay on a leash or in a stroller. Their humans must clean up accidents. And the animals have to stay away from fountains and off the escalators. Dogs generally aren't allowed in restaurants and some stores might not be as dog-friendly as the mall in general, so check before you enter those areas with your pooch. At least one dog was spotted in the new Eataly on Thursday, but not in any of the Italian market's restaurants. Even though dogs are welcome to window shop, the mall doesn't extend the same hospitality to your pet bird or reptile, according to the rules. Do other South Florida malls allow dogs? Other malls in South Florida aren't as transparent when it comes to dogs. Simon-owner Dadeland and Miami International Mall declined to comment on their policies. The only Simon Malls property that allows dogs, as mentioned by several pet-friendly location trackers, is the outdoor Falls in Kendall. According to Pet-Friendly Travel, the mall features a 'dog comfort station' at guest services and allows dogs small enough to fit in a stroller, carrier, or held by the owner during the visit. Though the shopping center features various places to walk around, they aren't considered a 'dog-walking' friendly location. The Shops at Merrick Park, an open-air complex in Coral Gables, also allows dogs in accepting stores, common areas and public spaces. What you should know about bringing your dog to businesses? The best advice is to check with a business before bringing your dog inside. Some stores have different policies and don't always throw down the welcome mat for your pup. At the popular Miromar Outlets mall off Interstate 75 north of Naples, the outdoor center allows dogs, and individual stores post signs in their windows if canines are welcome inside. Under Florida law, restaurants generally don't allow dogs, but service animals are always allowed inside. And last year, Publix made it clear that dogs other than official service dogs, aren't welcome inside the supermarket. Florida's largest grocery store chain posted signs outside and the lobby to hammer home that point.
