
Tube-net seaweed farming takes root along AP coast
VISAKHAPATNAM: Seaweed farming is gaining popularity along Andhra Pradesh coast as an emerging livelihood, and sustainable marine practice that boosts coastal productivity. Known as the 'Medical Food of the 21st Century', seaweed offers health benefits, and industrial uses ranging from pharmaceuticals to food additives.
Despite its potential, commercial seaweed farming in India's open seas remains limited due to strong wave action and environmental factors. Traditional bamboo raft-based mono-line farming, suitable for shallow, calm waters, often fails in rougher coastal areas.
To overcome this, scientists have developed a tube net-based farming method using floating high-density polyethylene (HDPE) rafts with a multipoint mooring system.
Speaking to TNIE, Joe K Kizhakudan, Principal Scientist and Head of ICAR-CMFRI's Visakhapatnam Regional Centre, said this system has shown structural stability and better yield in turbulent waters up to 10 metres deep.
Trials using Kappaphycus alvarezii off Visakhapatnam coast proved successful. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the government has promoted this system, establishing a unit in Budagatlapalem village in Srikakulam district. Subsidies are being provided to Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and fisher communities.
Seaweed is harvested every 45 days, with dry seaweed selling for Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg. Ten kg of wet seaweed yields 1 kg of dry product. The required tubes last up to 10 years, making the model sustainable with low recurring costs.

Tirupati: HRD minister Nara Lokesh appreciated the efforts put in by municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana in reviving the 150-year-old VR school at Nellore, where Narayana not only studied but also began his teaching career as a part-time teacher. The VR school, which has a rich legacy, had almost become defunct and was shut down during the erstwhile YSRCP regime. In the run-up to the 2024 general elections, Narayana promised to the people of Nellore that the VR school will be revived immediately after the TDP-led NDA govt comes back to power in the state. In an effort to fulfil his promise, the municipal administration minister has now revived the VR school with international infrastructure including digital classrooms, state-of-the-art labs and an impressive sports arena with the help of funds to the tune of Rs 15 crore extended under the CSR initiative by the NCC group. With the help of the state municipal administration dept, about 1,000 children from the most underprivileged sections of the society were handpicked and provided admission at the VR school, which is all set to be reopened in the last week of June.

‘We plan to add 1,700 beds by FY27; 57% beds likely in tier 2/3 cities'
Kochi- and Dubai-based Aster DM Healthcare, founded by Dr Azad Moopen in 1987 with a single clinic in Dubai, expects to complete the takeover of the Blackstone and TPG-backed Quality Care Hospital by the fourth quarter of this fiscal. The takeover will result in the third largest hospital chain Aster Quality Care, after Apollo and Fortis, with 38 hospitals across four brands -- Aster DM, Care Hospitals, KIMS Health and Evercare -- offering over 10,150 beds spread across 27 locations. Aster Quality Care is now jointly controlled by the Moopen family holding 24% and Blackstone owning 30.7%. In an interaction with Benn Kochuveedan of TNIE, Dr Azad Moopen shares his plans and expectations from the largest deal that his group has done. Excerpts: When do you see the merger of Quality Care Hospital getting completed? What are the targets in terms of revenue, profit expansion etc? The merger brings together four leading healthcare brands — Aster DM, Care Hospitals, KIMS Health, and Evercare — forming one of the largest hospital chains with 38 hospitals and over 10,150 beds across 27 cities. Financially, the merger strengthens the balance sheet and cash flow, enabling accelerated expansion plans. We aim to increase bed capacity to around 13,300 beds by FY27, further expanding our reach into tier 2 and 3 cities, providing a platform for sustained growth in the future. The merger is expected to be concluded by Q4FY26, with benefits expected to start flowing in from early FY27. What are the synergies you see from the merger? The merger unlocks significant synergies that will drive growth, operational efficiencies, and enhanced patient care across the combined network. Integrating our extensive hospital portfolios will allow the new entity to benefit from economies of scale by negotiating better terms with suppliers, reducing costs, and streamlining inventory management that will lower operational expenses and improve margins. What is the capex plan for fiscal 2026, especially in light of the merger-driven expansion? How many more hospitals and beds to come up this fiscal? We plan to add 1,700 beds by FY27, taking the total bed tally in India to over 6,800 through the organic route and will further look for expansion through the inorganic route. Our overall capital allocation for expansion across the domestic market is Rs 1,400 crore, of which we have already spent around Rs 350-400 crore. You have announced a Rs 850-crore investment in Kerala. What is the strategic thinking behind focusing so much on Kerala, which is often seen as a relatively mature market? Kerala is now poised for a significant transformation with a planned investment of Rs 850 crore over the next three years. This expansion will be anchored by two major greenfield projects: Aster Capital Trivandrum, a 454-bed tertiary care facility, and Aster MIMS Kasaragod, a 264-bed multispecialty hospital. In addition, our flagship hospital, Aster Medcity in Kochi, is undergoing a substantial upgrade. By FY27, our total bed capacity in Kerala is expected to reach 3,453, marking a milestone in our journey of delivering quality healthcare and driving sustainable growth. Affordable healthcare remains a chimera for the average citizen. What is Aster doing differently on this front? To balance affordability and sustainability, we centralise complex procedures in larger hospitals, while smaller units focus on primary/secondary care. By FY27, as much as 57% of our planned bed additions will be in tier 2/3 cities, reinforcing our commitment to these regions. Technology is key to bridging gaps, with telemedicine set to grow at 20.7% annually till FY30, reaching $15.1 billion. Our digital health arm is expanding tele-ICU, teleradiology, AI-driven diagnostics, IoT monitoring, and EMR platforms to enhance accessibility, affordability, and quality care nationwide. What are the digital initiatives of the group? Some of our technology-driven, patient-friendly initiatives include the introduction of the Aster Health app that offers appointment bookings, e-pharmacy, and access to digital health records. We have come up with AI-powered diagnostic solutions, including the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome detection tool in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science. We are also expanding the home healthcare services under Aster@Home, providing in-home consultations, diagnostics, and physiotherapy, catering to India's growing elderly and chronic care populations.

TN health dept to set up 750-bed multi-specialty hospital in Chennai: Minister
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Sunday that the state government is set to establish a state-of-the-art 750-bed multispecialty paediatric hospital at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research campus in Guindy. The new facility will be developed on six acres of land and will be attached to a postgraduate and super-specialty paediatric institute under the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Once completed, it will become the third major healthcare institution on the Guindy campus, following the Kalaignar Centenary Super-speciality Hospital and the National Institute of Ageing. The state government has allocated Rs 487.66 crore for the project, which will include a seven-storey hospital complex covering 3.15 lakh square feet. In addition to the main hospital building, the project will feature hostels for doctors, nurses, medical students, and professors, along with advanced medical equipment and infrastructure. "This is the highest allocation made for any hospital project in Tamil Nadu till now," said Minister Subramanian during his visit to the site, accompanied by senior health officials, including Health Secretary P. Senthilkumar. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has given his approval for the project, and tenders will be floated shortly. The construction of the new hospital is expected to commence by September this year. The institute will be fully funded and operated by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The upcoming paediatric hospital will be equipped with 100 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, pay wards, shared wards, and suite rooms. According to University Vice-Chancellor K. Narayanasamy, the hospital will house 20 departments, including 14 unique specialties. These will include general medicine, critical care, surgery, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, cardiology, urology, hemato-oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and an organ transplant unit. Narayanasamy added that the institute will offer postgraduate super-specialty courses in paediatrics after its establishment. It aims to function as a centre of excellence, particularly for rare paediatric diseases, and will focus on bridging the gap between academic training and real-world healthcare delivery, he said. The new paediatric institute is also expected to bolster the university's academic standing and aid in participation in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), enhancing Tamil Nadu's reputation in medical education and research.
