Businessman, wife found murdered at home near Kottayam
A businessman and his wife were found brutally murdered at their residence in Thiruvathukkal, near Kottayam, on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Vijaya Kumar, owner of the Indraprastham Auditorium at Thirunakkara, and his wife Meera. The murders came to light around 8:45 a.m. when their domestic help arrived at the house and found the couple lying dead.
According to the police, both victims were found in separate rooms, lying in pools of blood with deep injuries, particularly on their faces, inflicted by a sharp weapon. The bodies were found lying unclothed. A weapon suspected to have been used in the murder was also recovered from the scene.
The police have ruled out robbery, pointing instead to personal enmity as the likely motive. A search is on to trace an inter-State migrant worker who had previously been employed at the residence. The person, identified as Amit, was dismissed last year following a theft involving a mobile phone.
'This individual used the stolen phone to withdraw money from Mr. Vijaya Kumar's account,' a police official said. 'A complaint was lodged and he was arrested . He, however, is currently out on bail.'
Preliminary investigations suggest the assailant scaled over the compound wall and gained entry into the house by breaking the window near the main door. He then unbolted the door from inside and entered the house.
'The data recorder of the CCTV network at the house is missing and we suspect the assailant removed them,' said Kottayam District Police Chief Shahul Hameed. 'We have received strong leads pointing to the accused, ' the official added.
The weapon used for the murders is believed to have been taken from the outhouse on the property.
The bodies were later shifted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital for post-mortem following the completion of inquest procedures.
The couple had earlier lost their elder son, who was found dead near a railway track in June 2017. That case is currently under investigation by the CBI. Besides the auditorium, Vijaya Kumar also owned several other business ventures. The couple is survived by a daughter who lives abroad.

His associate has been identified as Sahil Masih who also belongs to Dhariwal, the police chief said. In a release issued here, Yadav said that preliminary investigation revealed that Gurpreet was in direct contact with operatives of the Pakistan ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. The key ISI handler involved in the case has been identified as Rana Javed, he added. The DGP said two mobile phones containing virtual numbers, reportedly used to communicate with ISI operatives, have been recovered from the possession of both the arrested accused persons. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators in this case, he said. Sharing more details, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amritsar rural, Maninder Singh said Gurpreet joined the army in 2016 and systematically exploited his official position to collect, store and transmit classified military information via pen drives and discs. The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations. The SSP said in lieu of this espionage activity, Gurpreet was receiving monetary compensation through a complex financial network involving intermediary bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign associates to evade detection. In an intelligence-led operation, police teams arrested Gurpreet and his associate Sahil Masih, while they were attempting another handover of sensitive data, he said. He added that further investigations are in progress to unravel the wider nexus and identify additional conspirators, both domestic and foreign-based. Army jawan held by Punjab police on spying charges, was ‘introduced to ISI by Dubai-based smuggler'
Gurpreet, who joined the Army in 2016, was posted in Jammu with the Sikh regiment, and was at his native place on a month's leave at the time of his arrest. The arrest was made Saturday by Amritsar Rural police, who took the Army jawan identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Fauji, along with his aide, Sahil Masih, into custody. New Delhi: Police in Punjab have arrested a serving Army jawan for allegedly sharing sensitive information with operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), state police chief Gaurav Yadav said Sunday. Both Gurpreet and Sahil belong to Dhariwal village in Amritsar and were introduced to operatives of the ISI around five months back by a Dubai-based drug smuggler from the same town, DGP Yadav said in a statement Sunday. He added that the probe conducted so far has established that Gurpreet was in direct contact with ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. Additionally, he said that two mobile phones containing virtual numbers allegedly used for communication with ISI handlers have also been recovered from the accused. The key ISI handler involved has been identified as Rana Javed, DGP Yadav said. Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh said Gurpreet systematically exploited his official position to collect classified information, which he then allegedly passed on to his handlers via pen drives and discs. 'The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, while adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations,' a Punjab Police spokesperson said Sunday. SSP Singh added that Gurpreet had been receiving money from ISI operatives in exchange for classified information. The funds, he said, were deposited into the bank accounts of Gurpreet's friends, relatives, and foreign associates through credit to avoid detection. According to an FIR filed by Amritsar Rural district police, the duo was arrested on a tip-off from a source who alerted them to Gurpreet's suspicious activities. 'Even today, these two (accused) were sitting on the newly built Bharat Mala National Highway in Kaler village and making some plan. If they are raided now, they can be caught, and their phones, documents, and other belongings can be searched, allowing a significant amount of information to be obtained from them. Among them, information about the virtual/WhatsApp and money transactions of the agents of Pakistan's ISI can be found,' a police officer documented in the report that formed the basis of the FIR. The duo has been booked at Lopoke police station in Amritsar Rural under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deals with common intention in criminal acts. ThePrint reached Army spokesperson Colonel Nishant Arvind for comment via calls and WhatsApp messages but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received.
