Michael B. Jordan's gothic musical horror Sinners continues its phenomenal box office run, officially crossing the USD 350 million global mark and setting its sights on dethroning Hannibal soon. The latter film peaked at USD 351.7 million and currently stands as the 12th highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Sinners collected USD 83 million from international markets after seven weekends, lifting its global earnings to USD 351.1 million. The Ryan Coogler- directed period horror film has also made a substantial domestic impact, amassing USD 267.1 million in the US alone. With a production budget of USD 90 million excluding marketing, Sinners is not only a critical darling but also a commercial one, with eyes set on a final worldwide total in the range of USD 370-400 million.
By Tuesday, Sinners is projected to surpass both Alien: Romulus (USD 350.9M) and Hannibal, officially cementing its place as the 12th highest-grossing horror film in history. It will also become the second-highest-grossing horror release in the post-COVID era globally, trailing only behind Scream VI.
Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, Sinners stars Jordan in a dual role as criminal twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown seeking a new start in life, only to be confronted by a sinister supernatural force. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo, and newcomer Miles Caton.
Coogler, known for Black Panther and Creed, began developing Sinners through his production company Proximity Media in early 2024. Following a competitive bidding war, Warner Bros. Pictures secured the distribution rights. Principal photography took place between April and July 2024, with longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson handling the musical aspect of the film with his haunting score. Göransson also acted as an executive producer.
Sinners debuted theatrically across the globe on April 18 and has since become one of this year's standout entertainment pieces. Its critical acclaim, period setting, and genre-blending appeal have helped it transcend horror audiences and become a behemoth success. With momentum still on its side despite its impending June 3 digital debut, Sinners is poised to continue making record books for modern horror cinema.

Johnny Depp reflects on career after Amber Heard trial, calls himself crash test dummy for MeToo

Washington [US], June 22 (ANI): Johnny Depp has opened up about the impact of the highly publicised legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard, describing himself as a "crash test dummy" for the #MeToo movement. As per People magazine, in a recent interview, the 62-year-old actor, who won a defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2022, reflected on the personal and professional fallout from the trial, including the people he felt turned their backs on him during one of the most challenging periods of his life. Depp's legal battle with Heard stemmed from an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, where she spoke out about domestic abuse, though she did not directly name Depp. According to People magazine, after a lengthy trial in Virginia, Depp was awarded USD 10 million in damages, and Heard received USD 2 million on one of her counterclaims. The public scrutiny from the trial, combined with the media's intense focus on the allegations, left Depp questioning the loyalty of those around him. As per People magazine, during the interview, Depp admitted that certain individuals in his inner circle had "done him dirty," particularly those who had previously celebrated his success but remained silent when the allegations against him surfaced. He explained, "As weird as I am, certain things can be trusted. And my loyalty is the last thing anybody could question," as quoted by People magazine. Depp specifically called out an unnamed agent he had worked with for three decades, who spoke negatively about him in court during the trial. "That's death by confetti," he said, referring to the "fake" people who "celebrate you" to your face while speaking ill behind your back. "They lie to you, yet keep the money coming in, what do they want? Dough," he said, as per People magazine. Depp also shared his thoughts on the #MeToo movement, which gained widespread attention in 2017 after multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment were levelled against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Reflecting on his own experience, Depp said, "I was pre-MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for MeToo." He explained that, at the time of his legal battle, the movement was still in its early stages, and people in the industry were hesitant to stand up for him out of fear of backlash. Depp said that he "sponged it all in" during the difficult period and noted that the situation created an environment where people were "playing it safe" in order to avoid being labelled or criticised. "Better go woke!" he added sarcastically, implying that many in Hollywood were more concerned with maintaining their public image than standing by him. Despite the years of legal and personal turmoil, Depp seemed to find solace in the knowledge that his case was a turning point. "The jury gave me my life back," he said after the verdict, as quoted by People magazine. For Depp, the case was about more than legal justice; it was also a matter of personal truth. "Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me," he remarked, adding that he now feels "at peace" having finally accomplished that. Throughout the interview, Depp also addressed his so-called "comeback" in Hollywood and discussed how his career has evolved since the trial. Despite media reports suggesting that his professional life had been on hold, Depp was quick to assert, "Honestly? I didn't go anywhere." He pointed out his recent projects, such as the films Minamata and Jeanne du Barry and his commercials for Dior. Depp also hinted at an exciting upcoming project, 'Day Drinker', signalling that he has remained active in the industry. However, Depp made it clear that he doesn't view his return as a "comeback."

Did My Dearest writer scam K-drama production after advance pay? Full scoop on 350 million KRW feud over Namkoong Min, Ahn Eun Jin starrer

K-drama writer Hwang Jin Young, best known for My Dearest starring Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin, is currently facing serious legal consequences. She was recently found in breach of a past contractual agreement with a local production company. A Seoul court has ordered her to return 350 million KRW (approx. 254,000 USD). It was an advance she received for a television drama she never completed. The Seoul Western District Court recently ruled in favor of the unnamed drama production company. It stated that Hwang had failed to deliver on a commitment made in 2017 to complete a 20-episode series, despite having already received half of her total agreed fee. The contract: What went wrong? Back in August 2017, Hwang entered into an agreement to pen a full-length television drama. According to court documents, her fee was set at 35 million per episode, totaling 700 million for all 20 episodes. The production company fulfilled their part of the agreement by paying her 350 million in advance. They were expecting delivery of the scripts within a five-year period from the date of signing. However, the drama project saw no major progress over the following years. According to the company, Hwang submitted only one initial draft about a year after the contract was signed. When they responded with criticism and requested revisions, she allegedly did not provide any follow-up drafts or communicate further about the status of the work. Deal with MBC caused contractual conflict What complicates the matter is that at the time she signed this new contract, Hwang was already bound by an exclusive writing agreement with MBC for My Dearest. This earlier contract spanned from July 2014 to December 2019. It prohibited her from working with other companies during that period. As a result, she was contractually unable to dedicate time to the new project she had committed to in 2017. Despite this clear conflict, no proper arrangement was made to resolve the overlap. This led to a prolonged period of inactivity on the 20-episode drama she was commissioned to write. Legal action After years of inactivity, the production company reignited the issue in August 2023. They sent formal notice to Hwang to fulfill her original commitment. In response, she claimed that the five-year period stipulated in the contract had already expired. Therefore, she argued that she had no legal obligation to continue the project or return the funds. In early 2024, the company filed a formal lawsuit against Hwang. They claimed her refusal to complete the scripts constituted a clear breach of contract. The company also argued that she unjustly withheld a large sum without fulfilling her end of the deal. Court's ruling The court sided with the production company. It concluded that Hwang showed no clear effort or intention to meet her contractual obligations. The ruling stated that, 'It is highly questionable whether Hwang ever had the intention to faithfully fulfill the scriptwriting contract in this case.' The court emphasized that the original terms were not met and that her defense was not sufficient to excuse her inaction. As a result, Hwang was ordered to repay the entire 350 million advance. Hwang Jin Young files appeal While the initial ruling went against her, Hwang has not accepted the outcome quietly. She has filed an official appeal. The case is now set to be heard in the Seoul High Court, where a final decision will be determined after further review and legal proceedings.
