Drone pilots warned of ban around TT course

Yahoo25-05-2025

People have been reminded that a ban on drones has been put in place around the TT course during practice and race periods.
The restrictions come into force one hour before roads close for racing until all of them have been re-opened on each day of the event.
A spokesman for the Isle of Man's Civil Aviation Authority said the rules applied to all devices, regardless of size or weight.
Anyone caught breaching the ban could face a fine of up to £10,000.
Deputy director of civil aviation Colin Gill said the ban was vital as the airspace was used "by emergency and filming helicopters before, during and after racing and while practising was taking place".
They could also pose a "serious distraction to riders", and marshals had been told to report sightings immediately, which could lead to a practice or race session being halted, he said.
"No fly zones" were put in place to "ensure the safety of participants and that the events remain a safe and enjoyable spectacle of racing", he added.
The ban covers the airspace above the course within 305ft (1,000m) of the outside of the track.
Additional restrictions will also be in place on 5 June when the Red Arrows are due to perform over Douglas Bay.
That will see drones banned within 6 miles (9.7km) of the island's capital from 19:20 until 20:10 BST.
Drones used by organisers for coverage of the event have permission to do so, and work in conjunction with race control.

The World Cup of underrated Arsenal players

Who is the most underrated player in Arsenal's recent history? Ian Stone is joined by Amy Lawrence, Adrian Clarke and James McNicholas for a special Handbrake Off, in which the panel attempt to pick the player who has done the most for the club with the least fanfare. Ian, Amy, Adrian, James and The Athletic's Art de Roché gave producer Jay names of the Arsenal players they believe should be in the conversation. The only names they were aware of pre-recording were those they submitted individually. Advertisement The players were drawn out of a hat in knockout competition style, going up against each other head to head being put to a vote each time. In the spirit of the confusing Club World Cup, the tournament began with 17 names, meaning one had to be eliminated immediately. This left the panel deliberating on what it means to be underrated… Ian: We've got to get rid of one name who we believe is so terrible that he's not underrated. James: Or that he's too rated! It's funny because by definition the most underrated players won't be on this list. Adrian: Well I've got to say I put Alexis Sanchez in there because I think he is much much better than he is remembered for among Arsenal supporters. Amy: I think he's still my son's favourite player so I think he's quite highly rated in our house. James: It's hard because 'underrated', it's all relative isn't it. You could be an average player with a lot of positive perception, it's not necessarily about you ability it's about how you're perceived. Ian: I cannot believe Alexis Sanchez is even on the table… Adrian: Don't get me wrong I rate Alexis, that's why I put him in there. I just don't think he's as rated among certain sections of the support, as he should be. That for me is the ultimate underrated player. The round of 16 began as follows… Tune in to The Arsenal World Cup of underrated players on The Athletic's Arsenal podcast, Handbrake Off to find out who the team crowned as their underrated champion, and let us know in the comments below who your choice would be. Kamara, Rogers, Martinez – Who should Aston Villa sell?

Stories of Aston Villa's profit and sustainability problems are bordering on the monotonous. It is a matter well-told and widely reported, but few know what it takes to fix the deficit in Villa's accounts, thought to be around £50million ($67m) after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Factor in Villa having to distinctly reduce their wage bill to comply with UEFA's Squad Cost Rule (SCR), then the water becomes even murkier. Advertisement Rules dictate that 'spending on player and coach wages and transfers and agent fees' must be capped at 70 per cent of a club's revenue from the 2025-26 season onwards. Villa are expected to incur a substantial fine from UEFA following last season's breaches and if guilty this time, could face points deductions. Club sources, who have spoken on the condition of anonymity, state Villa's wage-to-turnover costs are projected in the mid-eighties, meaning they will have to remove further salaries from the books. In some respects, UEFA's (SCR) — with Villa participating in the Europa League next season — is more alarming than PSR. So, with Villa needing to sell, who should be the player(s) to go? Please allow The Athletic to argue with itself… At the end of last season, Martinez felt his race was run at Villa, hence the tears following the final home match against Tottenham Hotspur. The Athletic reported last month that an exit was the likely direction of travel, yet no move can materialise unless a club makes an offer. Saudi Arabian sides have expressed an interest but this, as it stands, does not entice Martinez, who aims to continue playing at the highest level while his wife, Amanda, has businesses in England. The argument for his sale: Martinez is 32, his performances showed a stark decline last season and his exit would help Villa with PSR — due to fetching a significant fee — plus SCR, with the Argentina international the squad's highest earner. Against: Villa are unlikely to find an oven-ready replacement as large a presence or with Martinez's charisma and pedigree. A replacement would be costly, especially as Villa also require a No 2. Digne, 32 in July, is on Atletico Madrid's list of left-back options, alongside Andy Robertson. Villa accept PSR means they cannot carry top-level players in the same position, with the salaries at left back — between Digne and Ian Maatsen — far too high. Digne's contract expires next summer and no talks have started. For: He is on a £120,000 a week, has a year left and Villa boast a £37.5m signing in Maatsen waiting to stand in. Against: Despite Maatsen waiting, he is young, defensively vulnerable compared to Digne and has not yet shown he can be trusted to play every week, especially in important games. Digne's exit would not fix Villa's financial problems entirely, even though the other left-back, Alex Moreno, has been told he can leave. Advertisement Kamara adores playing for Unai Emery but not securing Champions League football has increased uncertainty. A contract has been on the table for several months and is still unsigned. European and Saudi clubs have asked to be kept informed of discussions, with Kamara keeping his options open. For: With two years left on his deal, this is the final window to sell Kamara for a substantial fee. He has had injury issues since joining in 2022 and with club record signing Amadou Onana — who, admittedly, has received his own speculation — plus other alternatives, Villa are well-stocked in midfield. Against: Many close observers believe the Frenchman is Villa's most important player. He is the midfield anchor and critical to Emery's structure. There is an acceptance that Bailey will leave, barring interest shown not materialising. His representatives have discussed moving to Saudi Arabia, with Villa keen to grant a departure. For: The winger's form has fallen off a cliff since extending his contract in February 2024. The 27-year-old scored just twice last season as faith dwindled and he looked void of confidence. Against: Like Digne, Bailey's sale will not be the instant remedy for the financial complexities. Villa will need to replace him — they have approached Real Betis for Jesus Rodriguez — adding to the list of tasks in this window. Ramsey has long been a potential fall guy in helping to arrest the PSR issues. As a homegrown product, the 24-year-old midfielder offers pure bookable profit. However, injury issues and failing to hit the heights of when he first broke through have seen his market value decrease. For: When he has been available, performances have been solid, though not eye-catching. Villa have shown they can live without him and have solid alternatives in the left No 10 role. Against: One of Villa's own. Being an academy graduate gives him an emotional connection as well as appearing as a homegrown talent, vital for when Villa register their Europa League squad. If Ramsey can recapture form, his value will rise considerably again. If he stays, a new deal is not out of the question. Advertisement Rogers is Villa's greatest asset. He has several Premier League suitors, who know they will have to pay a sizeable fee to land him. Villa do not want to sell Rogers, owing to his talent ceiling, importance and that he can play multiple positions across the frontline, which is handy in a trimmed squad next season. Yet, money talks. For: Villa will solve their PSR at the click of a finger. Rogers would provide a considerable profit on the £15m paid for him from Middlesbrough in January 2024. Against: The 22-year-old is not on a huge salary, so this aspect can be managed. The player he is and can become is frightening — Emery would love to keep working with a talent who contributes so much. Villa rejected a £40m offer from Arsenal in January. The club were not pleased with the timing of the story surfacing hours before a crucial Champions League fixture against Celtic and dismissed the overall package, offered to be paid in several instalments. Watkins was behind Jhon Duran and then Marcus Rashford at different times last season, which caused frustration and created doubts over his future. Tellingly, Villa were not totally opposed to selling him in January, before Duran left for Al Nassr for €77m (£64.3m, $79.9m). For: Watkins is 29 and this summer may be the last chance for a big move. Emery has begun to show he is prepared for life without Watkins, instead picking Rashford in crucial games after the England international's form dipped. Against: How many players on the market consistently score 15 or more league goals a season? Despite his form concerns, niggling injuries and time out of the starting XI, Watkins was still Villa's top scorer. Replacing him would be a chasmic task, financially and from a scouting perspective, especially with no Duran in the squad or a striker of his ilk. It remains to be seen if any team is prepared to stump up the cash to persuade Villa to sell, so keeping Watkins would be the safe option.
