BOSTON -- Shin Yoo-yeol, head of global strategy at Lotte Biologics and the eldest son of Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin, was seen engaging with industry players at the 2025 BIO International Convention in Boston on Monday.
While most of the practical discussions at exhibitor booths were led by Lotte Biologics CEO James Park, who accompanied the younger Shin throughout the event, Shin was seen listening attentively to key business updates, exchanging business cards with booth representatives and showing genuine interest in the conversations.
'This is my second time attending the Bio USA, and I have high expectations for this year," Shin told reporters at the venue. 'I plan to attend several key meetings with global companies throughout the period.'
Shin's booth tour included Korean and international names, such as Dong-A ST, Celltrion, Dr. Reddy's Biologics, Thermo Fisher Scientific and SK Pharmteco, reflecting his broad interest in potential partners and future collaboration.
'While there's a predetermined list of booths to visit, Shin also adds companies he finds interesting on the spot,' said a Lotte Biologics official.
At the Dong-A ST booth, with Shin present, ST Pharm CEO Sung Moo-jae and Lotte Biologics CEO exchanged questions regarding antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) development, and discussed the potential for future business cooperation.
Earlier this year in January, Shin made an appearance at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, where other second- and third-generation conglomerate leaders, including Celltrion's Seo Jin-seok and SK Biopharmaceuticals' Chey Yoon-chung also attended.
At the time, Shin's participation followed a visit to CES 2025 in Las Vegas. This time, he is believed to have arrived at Bio USA after participating in the 2025 Consumer Goods Forum Global Summit, held June 10–13 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

S. Korean steel exports to US drop 16% in May on tariffs

South Korea's steel shipments to the United States fell more than 16 percent in May from a year earlier, with export prices down over 9 percent following the imposition of steep US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The US government began imposing a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports on March 12 and doubled the rate to 50 percent on June 4. South Korea's steel exports to the US dropped 16.3 percent to $327 million in May from $390 million a year earlier. Export unit prices declined 9.4 percent to $1,295 per ton from $1,429 over the same period, according to the Korea International Trade Association. "US steel tariffs appear to have begun affecting Korean steel shipments in May, as domestic steelmakers lowered their export prices last month to maintain a certain level of exports to the US," a KITA official said. Industry officials expect the higher tariffs will have a greater impact on Korean steelmakers in the second half of the year. The increased rates are likely to make Korean steel products less competitive in the US market and local clients may turn to more price-competitive suppliers, they said. Worse still, Nippon Steel's acquisition of US Steel is widely expected to further weigh on Korean steel exports to the US beginning next year. POSCO Group and Hyundai Steel Co., South Korea's two leading steelmakers, have been exploring ways to mitigate the impact of the steep tariffs on their operations. In March, Hyundai Steel announced plans to invest $5.8 billion to build an integrated, electric arc furnace-based steel mill in Louisiana by 2029, with production scheduled to begin that year. POSCO has decided to invest in Hyundai Steel's US steel mill project. (Yonhap)

SK Group teams up with AWS for Korea's largest W7tr AI data center

Set to launch in 2027, the mega project marks the largest corporate investment since President Lee Jae Myung took office SK Group said Sunday it has signed a partnership agreement with Amazon Web Services to expand cloud infrastructure in Korea by jointly building an artificial intelligence data center in Ulsan. SK plans to invest 7 trillion won ($5.1 billion), including $4 billion raised through investment from AWS. It is scheduled to begin operations by 2027 and generate up to 78,000 direct and indirect jobs as operations expand. Once completed, the facility will be Korea's largest AI infrastructure, powered by 60,000 graphics processing units and with a power capacity of 103 megawatts. SK will lead the construction of the data center while AWS will establish a new AI zone in Ulsan, delivering a broad selection of AWS' leading AI and cloud capabilities to customers in Korea. Ulsan is considered the optimal location for the establishment of the AI zone, as SK possesses a stable gas supply network, advanced energy solutions and ideal sites in the region. Additionally, the city offers a favorable environment for submarine cables and is highly supportive of industrial activities. The AI zone will combine industry-leading capabilities from the two companies through a 15-year partnership to provide top-tier network operations, a semiconductor supply chain and efficient power infrastructure. The partnership is in addition to AWS' long-term $5.88 billion planned investment in Korea through 2027. 'When SK Group's exceptional technical capabilities combine with AWS' comprehensive AI cloud services, we'll empower customers of all sizes, across all industries here in Korea to build and innovate with safe, secure AI technologies,' said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS. 'This partnership represents our commitment to Korea's AI future, and I couldn't be more excited about what we'll achieve together.' SK and AWS are expanding their strategic partnership to pursue wide-ranging collaborations that will benefit customers, giving them the ability to meet the growing demand for generative AI with compute, storage, database and edge computing capabilities. The new cloud infrastructure is a part of the AI Infrastructure Superhighway strategy announced last year by SK Telecom, which is involved in AI initiatives within the Group. SK expects to establish a key hub for hyperscale AI infrastructure through the superhighway project. It plans to enhance data sovereignty and strengthen its global competitiveness in AI by processing AI workloads generated in Korea directly within the country. 'We are pleased to combine the technological capabilities of SK Group with AWS, the world's leading cloud provider, to establish a core infrastructure for a Korean AI ecosystem and create a powerful new engine for 'AI highway,'" said Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group. SK and AWS held a signing ceremony to launch a project to build an AI data center on Friday in Ulsan with President Lee Jae Myung in attendance. Lee vowed full-scale support for AI to create a new growth engine. 'The new government will make every effort to actively support Korea in adopting AI as a new national growth engine so that the country can once again leap forward as a dynamic, growing nation,' the president said.
