London Underground driver sacked after knitting and watching videos at the wheel

A London Underground driver who was caught knitting behind the wheel has been sacked.
Footage shows the driver of the Northern Line train at Hendon Central station appearing distracted as pulled away from the stop in February.
They can be seen watching a video on their phone as well as knitting.
It was only when a commuter spotted the driver and filmed the driver were they eventually caught.
The witness who caught the incident on camera said: 'I was so surprised. I didn't expect to see someone meant to be at work being so casual about the job.
'Especially because, at the time, there were Tube strikes going on, so it felt mad they were complaining about the job then relaxing on it.
'And, although I don't know how automatic the system is for the tubes, I remember thinking that this person has the passengers' lives in their hands.
'It felt crazy that this driver wouldn't take that more seriously.'
Transport for London said: 'This video was made earlier in the year. We carried out a full investigation and the person involved no longer works at TfL.'
Meanwhile commuters have decided to take the state of the network's graffiti into their own hands and have started scrubbing them.
Recent months have seen a dramatic increase in defaced carriages, with Underground trains frequently seen covered with graffiti both on the inside and outside.
Joe Reeve, from Looking for Growth, led a team to spruce up trains on Sunday morning.
He told Metro: 'We are seeing this [graffiti] every single day. I take the Bakerloo Line every day. I see someone push through the barriers, and then every carriage is covered in graffiti.
'Londoners are fed up and the cavalry is here. We are not going away.'
His team used an environmentally friendly water-based graffiti remover to clear the writing plastered all over the carriages, including on the doors, floors and ceilings.

The incredible moment was captured by film crews for the latest episode of Channel 5's Fare Evaders: At War with the Law. Shocking footage shows how the young fare dodger refuses to present his ticket after being asked to do so by inspectors. When asked if his ticket was a child ticket by revenue protection officers Sharon and Carlos, the fare dodger brazenly admits to having a ticket but rejects multiple requests to show it. As the tense moment begins to boil over, the young fare dodger exclaims: "You can't actually physically touch me." Then, he begins to make his way along the walkway over the tracks at the station, heading towards one of the platforms. Despite other officers stepping in to try and help stop the cheat, he appears insistent to make it to his train without showing a valid ticket. Finally, officers manage to block him at the top of the staircase of one platform, confronting him continuously to present his ticket. At one point, an exasperated ticket checker asks: "Why don't you just show us your ticket?", to which the fare dodger replies: "Because I don't need to." Despite his continued protest, the young fare dodger eventually gives in, admitting he had bought a child's ticket, despite being over the age of 15. Top Tory Robert Jenrick becomes 'bobby on the beat' as he confronts fare-dodgers on the Tube Sharon explained that the traveller had been short of buying the adult fare by around £1.30 and had therefore opted to buy the cheaper child ticket instead. As a result, the fare dodger was issued with an "unpaid fare notice", which is the lowest penalty enforced in these situations. It means the young passenger was able to travel without a ticket on the day but he would need to pay the fine within 21 days. Sharon explained: "A colleague's been really fair with him. "He's issued an unpaid fare notice, which is the lowest penalty we can give and it's just the price of the ticket that he should have bought." Another inspector filmed for the show said how sometimes he and other staff are abused verbally by travellers. He said: "Sometimes we get bad language towards us, they will just push through and then we've got to stop them. "We do get that level of abuse from them. And these are kids that are between 14 and 16 and they're effing and jeffing at us. "And I'm like, well, hang on." He added: "You do get people who are unhappy about being spoken to. "No one wants trouble. You hope that everyone is going to be nice, but not everyone is the same, are they? "But then you get customers who do actually appreciate it as well." Just last month, South Western Railway revealed it had recovered a total of £3.4 million from revenue protection work last year. Unpaid fares cost the railway nearly £240 million each year - with South Western Railway estimating roughly 4.6 per cent of users of its network travel without a valid ticket. Moment officer tells Christian street preacher 'it's not right' outside station

The group had been on the concourse between Kings Cross Station and St Pancras International when the officer told the religious group, 'It's so loud'. 'These people just want to do their journey, they're not coming here to listen to you,' the officer said. Preacher Mon B, who leads Mad 4 Jesus Ministries, asked if she was performing a happy song, and if it would be okay for them to be present outside the station. The officer then began to walk away from the discussion, before adding: 'I just think it's all wrong.' The moment happened shortly after the group were allegedly told they couldn't stand in front of the barriers near the station. Metro has contacted BTP for more information. Preachers have previously had run-ins with police – one preacher who was forcibly stopped and moved on by police for 'attracting a crowd' with his public speaking and singing was awarded £1,250. Dominic Muir, who runs Christian charities Now Believe and Jesus Fields, was preaching and singing Amazing Grace in Blandford, Dorset, on April 22, 2020, when the UK was in its first lockdown. A police officer asked him to move on and then grabbed him by the wrist to get him to leave. Dorset Police believe the officer used 'reasonable force', but they reached an out-of-court settlement paying Dominic £1,250 in damages and costs. Onlookers filmed the encounter, and a video shows the preacher speaking about the gospel on the back of a truck. Prisoner painstakingly dug a tunnel but failed to escape after getting stuck

Prisoner Alan Leandro da Silva, 32, spent two days using a broomstick handle and a nail to dig the opening in his cell at Rio Branco Penitentiary. Thinking the hole was wide enough, he tried to slip through while the guards were distracted, only to find himself lodged firmly in the concrete. Wardens foiled the attempted prison break after seeing 'strange movement' in the cell on June 16. They called firefighters to help free da Silva, whose upper body had started to strain from dangling over the floor. Footage shows the convict leaning on a blue chair as rescuers drill through the concrete around his torso. Officers completed the painstaking extraction and freed da Silva unharmed. A fire department spokesman said: 'According to the inmate's own account, the hole was dug for two days using a nail and a broomstick. 'However, during the escape attempt, he was trapped inside the opening. In view of the situation, the Criminal Police called the Fire Department to carry out the rescue. 'After thorough work, the rescue team was able to successfully release the victim, who was safely handed over to the Criminal Police team that was already on standby at the scene.' The man was given first aid before being hauled back into his cell, but it's unclear how he got the tools to make his escape attempt possible. In 2018, a prisoner suffocated to death just metres from escaping after digging a 70-metre-long tunnel from his cell toilet to freedom. More Trending Judson Cunha Evangelista, 26, suffered from a lack of oxygen as he carved the tunnel, which had already passed under the perimeter wall of the maximum security jail in Boa Vista, northern Brazil. The escape route was discovered by police after the inmate, who was serving time for murder, managed to make it back to his cell after becoming ill inside the hole, but he died soon after. Shocked officers discovered a hole which began underneath the toilet in Evangelista's cell in Wing 7 of the Monte Cristo penitentiary, the largest prison in Brazil's northernmost state of Roraima. The dirt tunnel continued for 70 metres underneath the prison and had already passed under its heavily-fortified outer walls and electric fences, according to prison authorities.
