Atletico de Madrid becomes partner in Rwanda's global tourism push
Kigali, May 1 (UNI) Rwanda and Atletico de Madrid, a Spain-based football club, have entered into a partnership to promote the Visit Rwanda tourism brand, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) said.
The deal marks Atletico Madrid's first-ever commercial collaboration with an African brand, according to the RDB statement issued Wednesday.
The multi-year partnership, running until June 30, 2028, "reflects Rwanda's strategic ambition to position itself as a premier global hub for investment, tourism, and sports development," Jean-Guy Afrika, chief executive officer of the RDB, was quoted as saying.
As a premium partner, Visit Rwanda will feature prominently on the front of Atletico de Madrid's men's first team training and warm-up kits for the remainder of the current La Liga season, including the Club World Cup.
From next season, the branding will also appear on the women's first team training kits and on the back of official match jerseys for both teams, the statement added.
According to the RDB, the agreement includes significant visibility across Atletico de Madrid's home stadium Riyadh Air Metropolitano, digital platforms and global fan engagement campaigns.
Rwanda has also been designated as the club's official training partner, official tourism destination partner, and official coffee supplier, offering a global stage to promote Rwanda's renowned coffee and hospitality.
Beyond branding and tourism promotion, the collaboration is expected to support the technical development of football in Rwanda by granting young players and coaches access to Atletico de Madrid's world-class expertise and training programs.
Visit Rwanda is the tourism arm of the RDB, which spearheads Rwanda's economic transformation by enabling private sector-led growth.

River Plate, Monterrey play out goalless stalemate in Club World Cup
River Plate were left frustrated after a 0-0 draw with Mexico's Monterrey on Saturday, missing a chance to secure a spot in the Club World Cup knockout stage. Despite dominating large stretches of the match, the Argentine side couldn't break through, with former Boca Juniors goalkeeper Esteban Andrada producing a string of crucial saves for Monterrey. The result leaves Group E finely poised heading into the final round of matches on Wednesday, with River and Inter Milan both on four points and Monterrey close behind on two. Monterrey will face already-eliminated Urawa Red Diamonds in their final group game. — FIFACWC (@FIFACWC) In front of over 57,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Monterrey started brightly, forcing River goalkeeper Franco Armani into an early save from Sergio Canales. But the match soon became disjointed, with 23 fouls disrupting the flow in the first half. Live Events River missed two golden chances just before the break - Giuliano Galoppo fired wide from a central position, and Lucas Martínez Quarta misfired from close range after a corner fell kindly to him. The Argentinians pushed forward in the second half, with 16-year-old Franco Mastantuono and striker Miguel Borja both denied by Andrada, whose performance proved decisive. River's night ended on a sour note as Kevin Castano received a second yellow card in stoppage time, capping off a disappointing evening for the Buenos Aires club. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

'Squad Must Be Trimmed': Manchester City Coach Pep Guardiola's Big Suggestion
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said Saturday his club will have to sell players this summer for the stars' own good. The Premier League side brought in several players ahead of the Club World Cup, leaving Guardiola with a large squad. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray in recent days. Guardiola said he did not know anything about it, but said several players would have to be sold following the purchases of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri. "I will love to have the players we have right now all season," Guardiola told reporters in Atlanta. "The problem is they will be unhappy during the season, they will be sad, they will be disappointed. "I don't want that. I do it for them, not for me. For them. We have to see what happens, it's a long time until the transfer window will be closed, we have to see step by step." Guardiola has said in the past he prefers a squad size of around 20 senior players, whereas City have more than 30 at present. Before trimming the squad City are hoping to win the Club World Cup in the United States with their new arrivals providing fresh energy. They beat Wydad AC in their first match and face Al Ain on Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium where they can seal qualification to the last 16. Guardiola said Spanish defensive midfielder Rodri was not able to start the game as he continues his comeback from injury. "He's getting better. He can play 20 minutes, 30 minutes at a time. He wants to play to help but we want to protect his knee," said the coach. 'Privilege' Guardiola said he was keen to take City far in the Club World Cup and it was a "privilege to be here". The coach dismissed some of the complaints about the competition and pointed towards the attitude of the South American clubs as an example of follow. "I love when I see Botafogo, all the Brazilian teams, Argentinian teams, how they celebrate, how they are together, I love them," said Guardiola. "I'm pretty sure for the South American teams, for the Brazilian teams, for Argentinean teams, this competition is maybe the maximum... "I like how all the games are tight, except one or two, and people are surprised, European teams lose. Welcome to the real world. Welcome to the real world my friends." Guardiola said Brazilian sides would have a "carnival for one week" if they won the tournament. After Manchester City failed to win a trophy apart from the Community Shield, it would provide a boost heading into the new season. Guardiola said his team and staff, both featuring new arrivals, were enjoying spending time with each other and their facilities in Florida. "It's a privilege to be here... to be back in four years time you have to win big, big, prizes," said Guardiola. "Once we are here why should not we fight to stay longer and longer and longer... "We can say it's annoying to come here (but) I want to arrive to the last stages, and that's the truth." Alcaraz, Lehecka set up final clash at Queen's club
London, June 22 (UNI) The top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and Czech hopeful Jiri Lehecka both reached the men's singles final at the ATP 500 Queen's Club Championships here. The world No. 2 Alcaraz from Spain was too good to be beaten by compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut as the 22-year-old sensation extended his longest winning streak in his career to 17 matches after outplaying the 37-year-old 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday. "I'm feeling great. I'm just enjoying my time here," said the 2023 Queen's club champion. "So the confidence is pretty high right now." The five-time Grand Slam champion is going to fight for the trophy against Lehecka as the 23-year-old world No. 30 saw off home favorite Jack Draper 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Lehecka showed his great form in west London as he reached the semifinals by winning three matches in a row all in straight sets. He faced strong challenges from the world No. 6 Draper since the second set, but managed to keep his sharpness in crucial moments to seal the victory in two hours and seven minutes. "It was painful for me that last year I wasn't able to play," said Lehecka, who missed the whole grass-court season last year due to a back injury. "So this year I came on grass even more motivated than before." "It's going to be a great challenge. He's going to be the favorite," Lehecka said while looking ahead to the final with Alcaraz on Sunday. "So I will just try to stick to my game. Last time I played against him in Doha and I beat him. So I will just try to rethink that match." UNI/XINHUA BM
