Fears gunman is targeting cats in village after pet shot with air rifle
A 'close-knit' village has been rocked after a family's adored pet cat was shot by an air rifle.
Vicki Waskett's beloved cat Bella was gunned down 'in broad daylight' on May 22 and needed emergency surgery to stay alive.
Residents of the sleepy village of Wendlebury, outside Bicester, 'don't feel safe' as the mystery shooter remains on the loose.
Bella, 4, a timid half-Burmese half-tabby cat who doesn't roam far, returned home with an 'odd puncture wound' on her leg.
When blood began pouring out of her limb, Vicki, 49, rushed her to the vet, where they discovered a 1cm long bullet lodged in her.
The mum-of-two told Metro: 'I was horrified, absolutely horrified. I cried all the way home.
'They were aiming for a vital organ. I couldn't think of anybody who would want to do that. It's a village where people generally feel quite safe.
'Somebody out there close by, potentially one of our neighbours, has got evil intent.'
The vets confirmed she had been shot with an air rifle or BB gun, and once the pellet had been removed, it appeared to come from a small rifle.
Bella was left 'depressed and crying' for days before a metal rod and pins could be placed in her leg in surgery.

The feline is slowly on the mend, but that has not stopped the incident two weeks ago from becoming the talk of the town.
Despite posting on a local Facebook page and reporting to Thames Valley Police, Vicki is still in the dark about who shot her cat.
Vicki, who owns two other cats, added: 'I actually wanted to move house after I found out.
'A couple of hours later, I thought, 'I just want to move, I don't want to live here any more.'
'I don't think I will ever feel safe, because when the cats go out, I will always be a bit more nervous.
'I hope whoever did this feels a bit ashamed at least. I really hope they feel ashamed of themselves and nothing else.'
Her 20-year-old son William has also been out knocking on doors in Wendlebury in hopes of finding answers.
Vicki believes Bella must have been shot in Wendlebury because she does not travel long distances, but is unsure whether the shooters live in the town or were just passing through.
Cat charity Cat Protection has been campaigning for the introductory licensing of air guns to stop 'cruel air gun attacks' on cats.
They told Metro there were 53 media reports of cats being shot with air guns in 2024 and already 8 so far this year.
Their Advocacy & Campaigns Manager, Stefan Blakiston Moore, added: 'These numbers are only the tip of the iceberg. It is something that comes up a lot more than we expect.
'It is horrific. Sadly, in many situations, air gun attacks can be fatal.
'From media reports alone, around 30% of those that were reported across the UK were fatal.

'Essentially, in England and Wales, anyone over the age of, age of 18 can go out and buy one of these weapons unchecked.
'Sadly, that does mean these weapons are sometimes in the hands of the wrong people who are wishing to do harm to people's pets.'
Thames Valley Police told Metro: 'The force was called on 25 May to report that a vet had said a cat in their care may have been shot with an air rifle or bb gun in the village of Wendlebury.
'If anyone saw anyone with an air rifle or BB gun in the village on that morning, please contact the force by calling 101 or our website, quoting investigation number INC-20250525-1857.'

Former Texas Republican U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, who left Congress amid sexual harassment allegations, has died. He was 63. He died in a Corpus Christi hospital and suffered heart and liver problems in recent years, Steve Ray, his former longtime political consultant, said. 'He did a tremendous job as congressman for this area,' Ray said, noting that Farenthold cared about fighting crime and promoting transparency. 'His heart was really always in the right place.' Before becoming a congressman, Farenthold was a sidekick for a conservative radio talk show host, Ray said. 'When he decided to run, nobody in the world thought he was going to win,' Ray said. When he left office, Farenthold started his own radio show, which he continued until he died. In addition to his wife, Farenthold is survived by two adult daughters, Morgan Baucum and Amanda Lawrence, Ray said.

Putin sends his own dead soldiers to Ukraine in 'disdain for fallen troops'
Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia repatriated at least 20 of its own dead soldiers in recent exchanges with Ukraine - 'they threw the corpses of their citizens at us,' he said Vladimir Putin's Russia has been handing over its own deceased troops to Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. Zelensky said the bodies of 20 Russian soldiers had been received. The exchange had been agreed in the early June talks between Ukraine and Russia. It saw Ukraine receive the bodies of 6,057 of its soldiers, while Russia said 6,060 bodies had been transferred to Ukraine and that the remains of 78 of its own soldiers were repatriated. It is not clear why there is such a large difference between the number of exchanged bodies, but Russia may have been able to recover its own dead following small territorial gains. The process was monitored by members of the Red Cross. "It has already been confirmed during repatriations that the bodies of 20 people handed over to us as our deceased soldiers are Russian," Zelensky said, describing it as a result of Moscow's disorganisation in carrying out large swaps of wounded POWs and remains of troops.. He said the Russian side insisted the dead were all Ukrainians, adding "Sometimes these bodies even have Russian passports". 'They threw the corpses of their citizens at us. This is their attitude toward war, toward their soldiers. And this is already documented. Sometimes these bodies even have Russian passports,' he said. One of the bodies is an ' Israeli mercenary' fighting for Russia, Zelensky said. It comes after Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the body of a Russian soldier being handed to Ukraine showed how Russia "treats its people with contempt". Mr Klymenko said that one of the bodies, labelled 'No. 192/25', was identified as Alexander Viktorovich Bugaev. Bugaev, born in 1974, was carrying a Russian passport and was dressed in a Russian military uniform. Officials also found a military ID that said he had served in the 1st Battalion of the 39th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, the Kyiv Independent reported. 'This is yet another proof of how Russia treats its people with contempt, throwing their bodies onto the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers," Klymenko said. He said that Bugaev's family had been searching for him for months. The minister also said that Russia had located his remains after he went missing amid fighting close to the village of Novomykhailivka in Donetsk, but they chose to 'dump' his body. "This shows how little human life means to Russia,' said Klymenko. 'Or maybe it's just a way to avoid paying compensation to the families. But they will have to pay anyway: we are returning these bodies." As the was continues to rage in Ukraine, a total of 77 combat clashes between the two sides were recorded today, according to an update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a Facebook post.
