GEORGE TOWN: A wide range of career opportunities are being offered at the ongoing myStarJob Fair 2025 at Setia SPICE Convention Centre.
The two-day event, which ends today, has drawn job seekers from across the region eager to explore employment prospects and personal growth opportunities.
Organised by Star Media Group, the fair features almost 20 companies and agencies from various industries and sectors.
Apart from offering job openings across different levels and positions, there are also on-the-spot interviews, career talks and personal development sessions aimed at helping visitors boost their career potential.
Among the participating exhibitors is Prudential BSN Takaful Bhd, whose recruitment head Ahmad Firdaus Ab Halim reporting strong interest from job seekers.
'We are looking for takaful consultants and offering a support programme dubbed the Elite Development Programme (EDP).
'Designed to develop and groom young emerging talents to succeed as wealth planners and future leaders regardless of background, it is open to those aged between 20 and 50.
'New graduates with diploma qualifications and above are eligible to apply, and they can benefit from between RM2,000 and RM5,000 in monthly financing.
'There are also additional term and performance rewards of up to RM15,000, respectively,' he said.
Within the first two hours of opening yesterday, the Prudential BSN booth received more than 200 potential leads.
As a Gold Sponsor of the event, Prudential BSN was presented with a certificate of recognition by Star Media Group senior manager (event & exhibition) Elaine Wong.
Financial services provider Manulife Malaysia was also acknowledged as the event's Bronze Sponsor with the certificate received on behalf of the company by its recruitment director (Northern region) Lau Wai Kin.
Visitors, who arrived in droves to look for job prospects and consultations, were not left out from gaining from the session there.
Universiti Malaya fresh graduate Nur Aisyah Zulkifli, 24, who recently completed her studies in Human Resource Management, said she is hoping for an advantage into the workforce.
'The job market is very competitive, so I came to the fair to explore openings and meet recruiters directly. I'm also hoping to find out more about companies I might not have considered before.
'To my surprise, it was eye-opening as some companies were actively conducting on-the-spot interviews, which was great.
'I collected some brochures and managed to speak with human resource reps who gave practical advice on curriculum vitae improvement and interview preparations,' she said.
Technician Alvin Loke, 29, who is seeking a career switch, managed to explore new sectors.
'I've been working in tech support for five years but looking to transition into data analytics or cybersecurity.
'The job fair has provided me a chance to network with companies directly and explore new sectors that align with my current skill set.
'The opportunity to talk to employers face-to-face makes a big difference compared to online applications,' he said, adding that career progression, upskilling opportunities and work-life balance were his top priorities.
Admission to the job fair from 11am to 7pm is free.

KLIA aerotrain to resume service
Loke: It will undergo several more tests before operations start on July 1 SEPANG: After a hiatus of more than two years, passengers travelling through Terminal 1 of the KL International Airport (KLIA) will only have to wait nine more days before they can use its signature aerotrain to get from the main terminal building to the satellite terminal building, and vice versa. The aerotrain replacement project, which is currently in its final testing phase, is set to begin operations on July 1. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said it will undergo several more tests over the coming days, including an emergency response plan test together with the relevant authorities. 'If everything goes well, it will begin operations at 10am on July 1,' said Loke when giving the media a preview of the aerotrain service here yesterday. He said there will be three train sets on deck, with two operating concurrently during peak hours. During off-peak hours, or between 12am and 5am, only one train will operate to allow maintenance works to be carried out. Each train has three carriages and can ferry 270 passengers at one time. Loke also expressed hope that the aerotrain's return will improve KLIA's service and image. 'There will be more Asean meetings coming up in the next few months, with another summit to be held at the end of the year. '2026 is also a major year as we are organising Visit Malaysia 2026 and the aerotrain is a vital part of preparations here,' he said. On the series of delays in the resumption of aerotrain services, Loke said it was to ensure safety is made priority. According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the aerotrain has now entered its final stage of testing. This comes following the successful completion of the critical fault-free run (FFR) and final detailed inspection by the Land Public Transport Agency. Under the FFR testing, the first train was required to complete 2,000km of continuous fault-free operations, while the remaining two trains logged 1,000km each. 'This ensures all three trains are fully commissioned and that the system's built-in redundancy is in place for live operations,' it said. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, who was also present, said the airport is now in the final stretch of preparations. 'Our volunteers are also participating in trial runs to simulate passenger movements,' he said. The aerotrain, which came under public scrutiny for frequent breakdowns, had its services suspended in March 2023. There was an episode where the train stopped midway from the main terminal building and the satellite building. A second train was deployed to retrieve the stranded passengers, but the rescue train also experienced technical difficulties, resulting in passengers having to complete the journey on foot.

Warisan urges explanation of ‘hidden' tariff hikes in Sabah
Warisan Kota Kinabalu division information chief Samuel Wong has called for transparency over Sabah's electricity tariff structure, alleging hidden rate hikes under the tiered billing system. KOTA KINABALU: The city's Warisan branch has urged the state government to address what it claims are hidden electricity tariff hikes in Sabah through a quietly restructured tiered billing system. Its information chief, Samuel Wong said that although the state recently announced a six-month waiver of the electricity surcharge under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, Sabahans are still experiencing rising bills due to a more complicated and punishing tier structure. 'The government says there's no surcharge, but our bills tell a different story. What Sabahans are facing is a hidden tariff hike, not through official announcements, but via subtle changes to how electricity usage is charged,' he said in a statement. He explained that in 2022, there were five usage tiers ranging from RM0.175 to RM0.450 per 100 units. However, by 2025, the structure expanded to seven tiers, with a new highest rate of RM0.470 per 100 units. 'This expansion and reshuffling of thresholds means ordinary households are now more likely to hit the highest rate even with moderate usage. It's a disguised price hike,' he said. Wong contrasted Sabah's situation with upcoming reforms in Peninsular Malaysia, where the tiered system will be scrapped by July 2025 in favour of real-time tariff reviews based on actual fuel prices and foreign exchange rates. 'The peninsula is seeing meaningful reform. What about us in Sabah? Is the GRS-Pakatan Harapan government even trying to fight for a fair deal for us?' he asked. He also urged the government to abolish the 8% Sales and Service Tax (SST) imposed on residential electricity usage, calling it a burden on essential needs. 'Electricity is essential. Why are we taxing families who are already overpaying under a broken system?' he said. Wong called on Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and the state government to fully disclose the current tariff structure and present a clear roadmap for reform. 'Sabahans have paid more than enough. We need answers, we need reform, and we need action now,' he said.

MONEY THOUGHTS: A practical blueprint for modest wealth
This is our current reality: United States President Donald Trump's asinine trade tariff tantrum will make life tougher for both Americans and the rest of the world, because the economic friction introduced by his tariffs will lower Earth's potential aggregate economic growth. The reduction will make life less palatable for most of Earth's 8.2 billion people. Thankfully, there are ways for regular people to restructure their finances to benefit from the economic and capital market volatility stemming from bad policies gushing out from the once-respected White House like a high-pressure stream of raw sewage. In April, Forbes magazine released its 39th annual World's Billionaires list. It unearthed a record number of 3,028 billionaires with an aggregate net worth of US$16.1 trillion. The mean net worth of those 3,000-plus super-wealthy men and women this year: US$5.3 billion. The world's first billionaire was oilman John Davison Rockefeller — later referred to as John D. Rockefeller Sr when his son John D. Rockefeller Jr was born. JDR Sr became a billionaire in 1916 at the age of 77. To their credit, he and his progeny nurtured a culture of philanthropy that benefitted millions over many decades. JDR Sr died in 1937 at the age of 97 years and 10 months. Five years before his demise, in writer John Thomas Flynn's book God's Gold: The Story of Rockefeller and His Times, JDR Sr is quoted saying: "I believe the power to make money is a gift from God — just as the instincts for art, music, literature, the doctor's talent, the nurse's, yours — to be developed and used to the best of our ability for the good of mankind. "Having been endowed with the gift I possess, I believe it is my duty to make money and still more money; and to use the money I make for the good of my fellow man according to the dictates of my conscience." I find that almost century-old statement of mission and intent (from 1932) inspiring. LESSONS AND PRINCIPLES I recognise it is unlikely any of Earth's current crop of 3,028 billionaires will read this Money Thoughts column, including the 19 of them who are Malaysians with average net worths of about US$3 billion or RM12.7 billion. I probably don't have anything of value to share with those super-elite individuals who account for 0.000037 per cent of all living humans. However — and this I know from decades of client interactions — when it comes to attaining modest levels of wealth, say in the much lower RM100,000 to RM10 million range, I do have viable lessons and principles to share with many people. Toward that end, there is a multi-part blueprint which I'm happy to share with ambitious readers. Note: Meaningful levels of domestic, regional, and global philanthropy can be achieved by the many millions of people worldwide who are capable of building wealth levels in the range of RM100,000 to RM10 million. So, to help such individuals, I've been laying the foundation of this blueprint over several weeks. Here it is: 1. Recognise the value of two distinct processes; 2. Embrace high market volatility as a long-term aid to wealth-building; 3. Harness a logical long-term investment strategy; and 4. Use a readily available banking facility to put your plan on autopilot. Allow me to elaborate: 1. The Two Processes The six-step financial planning process and a logical three-part wealth-building process can be of use to almost all adults of sound mind. Read that recent Money Thoughts column for a rundown of both processes. Do take note of the second process, which comprises one principle, one strategy and one system. Each of which will be sequentially covered below to provide you — hopefully — with a robust framework to build future wealth for your family, most likely within the target range of RM100,000 to RM10 million. 2. Volatility's hidden value In both business and investing, the most straightforward way to make money is to buy low, and sell high. It is a powerful principle. When we understand this unchanging economic truth, we can begin looking upon asset price volatility as a beneficial wealth-building mechanism. Elaboration: 3. Understand dollar-cost averaging Unfortunately, a mere cerebral acceptance of the validity of buying low and selling high is useless unless we can also implement a disciplined strategy to do so consistently. The dollar-cost averaging (DCA) fits the bill. Perfectly. 4. Rely on standing instructions Finally, even after we reach the point of understanding that it is economically beneficial to implement a personal DCA strategy when aiming to build lifelong wealth, we still need a pragmatic system to automatically and emotionlessly implement that strategy. The system I recommend hinges on bank Standing Instructions that regularly shunt cash out of our bank account into, ideally, a diversified savings and investment portfolio for decades on end. Digesting all the material in today's column requires time and attention. I know most readers won't embark on the full journey, but the minority that does will prosper; and in all likelihood, bigtime. © 2025 Rajen Devadason
