SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Freedom Credit Union has pledged $7,500 to Square One's 'Back to Square One' capital campaign, furthering its commitment to community development.
The donation will help support early childhood education in western Mass. and fund Square One's new early learning and family support center in Springfield's South End.

The planned 26,000-square-foot facility is being built on the same site where Square One's original building stood before it was destroyed by a tornado in 2011. The new campus is scheduled to open next month.
'This gift represents Freedom Credit Union's strong support for our mission and vision for the future of the families who live and work here,' says Kristine Allard, Vice President of Development & Communication for Square One. 'We know that our new campus will play a vital role in positioning our region's young children for long-term success. We are so grateful to our friends at Freedom Credit Union and everyone who has supported our campaign.'
Since launching the campaign in March 2023, Square One has raised more than $13 million toward the construction of its new facility. However, the organization's rapid growth has already created a new challenge: a need for more space.
To help address the space limitations, Balise Auto donated a nearby unoccupied building adjacent to the construction site. That structure requires an estimated $4 million in renovations, which will begin once construction of the new main campus is complete.
'We are proud to support the important work Square One does every day to help children and families in our community grow and thrive,' said Freedom Credit Union President Glenn Welch. 'Their vision to effect meaningful change that results in more promising futures for children, families, and our community closely reflects our own cooperative spirit.'
Square One has seen rising demand for its family support services, a reflection of its growing impact in the region. The expansion of facilities is a strategic move to ensure continued support for Springfield-area families through high-quality education, care, and comprehensive family resources.
The 'Back to Square One' campaign continues to accept donations as it pushes forward with renovations and programming expansion.

Tesla (TSLA) Invites a Small Group of People to Test Its Robotaxi Service

EV maker Tesla (TSLA) has started inviting a small group of people to try out its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The test could begin as early as Sunday, according to Reuters. Riders must be at least 18 years old, and a Tesla employee will sit in the front passenger seat during each ride. Furthermore, the test will use about 10 Model Y SUVs running on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software. Those who receive the invitation can download Tesla's Robotaxi app to call a ride, and are asked to share their feedback on the experience. Confident Investing Starts Here: This trial is important for Tesla as the company shifts its focus from building affordable electric cars to working on robotics and artificial intelligence. Unsurprisingly, CEO Elon Musk says that safety is the top priority, with humans monitoring the cars remotely. He believes that the robotaxi service can grow quickly if the trial goes well. Still, experts are worried about Tesla's approach, which relies solely on cameras and AI, rather than incorporating additional sensors like lidar or radar. These worries grow in conditions like fog, heavy rain, or bright sunlight. As a result, some lawmakers and safety experts want more caution, which led a group of Austin-area Democratic lawmakers to ask Tesla to wait until September, when new state rules for autonomous vehicles take effect. It is worth noting that self-driving services are expensive and risky, and companies like Tesla, Waymo (GOOGL), and Zoox (AMZN) have already faced federal investigations and recalls after accidents. What Is the Prediction for Tesla Stock? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 14 Buys, 12 Holds, and nine Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $286.14 per share implies 11% downside risk.

Shawn Askinosie, Rose O'Neill among 2025 inductees to MSU Public Affairs Hall of Fame

America's first published female cartoonist, a chocolatier who supports sustainable farming, and a builder of affordable housing will be inducted into the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame. The 2025 inductees include Shawn Askinosie, Marie Carmichael and Rose O'Neill. Up to six citizens with a connection to the state of Missouri, who serve as examples of global citizens, are selected each year. They must work to benefit others. This year, the legacy award will be presented to O'Neill. 'Each inductee has left an indelible mark on their community and beyond. They exemplify what it means to lead with purpose and serve with heart,' said MSU President Richard "Biff" Williams, in a June 16 news release. 'It's an honor to celebrate their outstanding contributions.' The induction ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at The Old Glass Place in Springfield. Tickets for the black-tie optional dinner event are $50 and can be purchased online. In 2006, Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer to start a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and never looked back. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch, award-winning chocolate factory located in Springfield, Missouri. Askinosie graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and worked at a Dallas firm for three years before starting Askinosie Law Offices in Springfield. She moved to Springfield more than 50 years ago and began her career as a teacher. She later served 12 years on the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education and now chairs the Missouri Development Finance Board. She and her husband, Joe, run Affordable Homes Development, which has built over 700 affordable housing units across Missouri. Her work has earned several awards, including the Kurt Wallace Vision Award and the HOME Team Award. Born in Pennsylvania in 1874 and raised in Nebraska, O'Neill was America's first published female cartoonist and creator of the iconic Kewpie characters. Her Kewpies debuted in Ladies' Home Journal in 1910 and became wildly popular dolls by 1912. O'Neill became the highest-paid female illustrator of her time, owning properties in Italy, New York, Connecticut and Missouri, where her Bonniebrook home in Taney County became a creative retreat. New name in play for MassMutual Center in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority that owns the MassMutual Center arena downtown is nearing a naming rights deal. The authority received a 'low number' of eligible responses when it solicited bids last month, said spokesman David Silk. The authority is reviewing those proposals and expects to make a decision in weeks, not months, Silk said. The deal will need approval of the authority's board. First opened in 1972, the venue was the Springfield Civic Center until MassMutual signed a $5 million naming rights deal in 2003. That deal began when the arena reopened with a convention center addition in 2005 and was to have expired in June 2021. The MassMutual name remains on the building pending a new deal. MGM Resorts International manages the MassMutual Center in conjunction with its MGM Springfield Casino under a 10-year agreement reached with the authority in 2022. The authority feared tying the building too closely with the casino and sought a different company to be the naming rights sponsor. Earlier this month in Connecticut, Holyoke-based PeoplesBank, announced it bought the naming rights for the former Hartford Civic Center. The bank is expanding in the Nutmeg State. The Hartford arena — most recently called the XL Center — will be PeoplesBank Arena. The Hartford arena hosts many home games for the perennial national powerhouse men's and women's University of Connecticut basketball teams, as well as the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League. In Springfield, the arena's premier tenant is the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds. Read the original article on MassLive.
