China joins US in brain implant race with successful clinical trial test

China's first clinical trial of a technology that allows signals from the brain to control an external device has proved successful, making it only the second country after the US to reach this stage, according to the Global Times.
Chinese researchers used brain-computer interfaces, or BCI, a wireless invasive implant in a patient with tetraplegia in March, the English-language newspaper reported. Only a few weeks after the surgery, the patient was able to play racing games and chess on the computer using only the mind to control the electronic devices, it said, citing a statement from the Shanghai-based Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology.
BCI is an emerging technology to help restore functionality to people with paralysis, and Neuralink Corp., co-founded by Elon Musk, is at the forefront of this research. The implant used in the Chinese trial is the world's smallest so far, with a diameter of 26 millimeters and thickness less than 6 millimeters, the Global Times said, adding that it's over 100 times more flexible than the one developed by Neuralink.
For the next stage, the team plans to enable the patient to operate a robotic arm using thoughts to perform more complex physical actions as such grasping and holding a cup. The center launched the trial in collaboration with Fudan University's Huashan Hospital.
Beijing has reported some experiments with implants by startup companies over the past months, but the clinical trial shows China is in a tight race with the US in developing this frontier technology. The center said the BCI system could get approval from the authorities, and be able to enter the market as early as 2028.

To fund the Arizona project, SoftBank is likely to adopt a project-based financing model, similar to the approach used in oil pipeline development. This would reduce upfront capital needs while using the firm's existing $23 billion liquidity and its stake in Arm Holdings as collateral. Following the reports, SoftBank's stock rose by 2%, while TSMC shares increased by 1.9%, reflecting market optimism around the potential scale and impact of the project. "Electronics exports hit USD 38+ billion in FY24-25, a 32 per cent year-on-year increase," Malviya said. The email shows the department will no longer cover the costs for those transgender veterans preparing for gender dysphoria treatment and seeking cryopreservation. Dsyphoria treatment is a process in which eggs or sperm (gametes) are frozen and stored to be thawed for later since Donald Trump has returned to office, he has taken a slew of actions regarding transgender people, including signing an executive order stating that there are only two unchangeable sexes and another attempting to ban transgender women from competing in women's sports. He also signed an order aimed at restricting access to puberty blockers and other gender care for people under age 19 with some of his actions sparking legal challenges in the March, it was announced in the VA specifically that the department began phasing out treatment for gender dysphoria following Trump's executive order recognizing only two sexes. However, the VA stated that transgender veterans would still have access to VA health care the email now indicates a shift from the previous policy. "On yesterday's (6/16/2025) National Fertility Interdisciplinary Teams Office Hours call, it was announced that VA will no longer pay for cryopreservation of gametes for a medical indication if it involves transgender veterans seeking cryopreservation in preparation for treatment of Gender Dysphoria or Gender Identity Disorder. This will reportedly affect new authorizations and will not disrupt cryopreservation that has already been initiated," the email viewed by NewsWeek added that according to another senior official in the Veterans Health Administration "the change is reportedly already in effect and an official announcement will be forthcoming" and advised the department to "hold on authorizing any new cryopreservation for medical indications related to gender dysphoria/gender identity disorder" while waiting for further guidance."We want to avoid a situation where veterans could be told they are approved for cryo, only to find out after the fact that VA cannot pay for care they received," the email Keith, the founder and executive director of the Michigan-based transgender charity Stand With Trans, said the policy was "discrimination.""Clearly, the rights of the trans community are the target of attack," she told Newsweek. "It doesn't matter whether someone is an adult, a minor, a veteran, a professional, or other, if one is trans identified, they are seeing rights being taken away one by one. It is deplorable. If one class of people can receive treatment paid for with their benefits, then other classes of people should receive the same.
