'Laws Under Attack': ICRC Sounds the Alarm Over Strikes on Hospitals in Conflict Areas

Dubai, UAE, May 22, 2025 – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has launched a bold new campaign, Laws Under Attack, to draw global attention to the repeated targeting of hospitals and medical personnel in conflict areas —despite the Geneva Convention's explicit protections established over seven decades ago.
When violence escalated in Lebanon in 2024, the last operational hospital in southern Lebanon became a direct casualty of targeted attacks. In a powerful statement to the world, the ICRC partnered with TBWA\RAAD to transform the very laws being violated into an urgent plea for accountability.
Amid the rubble and scars of the Hospital, Lebanese muralist and calligrapher Ghaleb Hawila meticulously inscribed articles from the Geneva Convention onto the building's shattered walls. Each crack and burn stands as concrete evidence of international law violations—an arresting reminder that these laws must be honored and not ignored.
This unprecedented initiative does more than commemorate the resilience of frontline medical workers—it demands that governments and armed groups alike respect humanitarian law and protect critical medical facilities. It is a resounding call to the global community to remember that laws written in ink cannot be erased by bombs.
'This campaign is crucial', said Simone Casabianca – Aeschlimann, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Lebanon, 'because it reminds us of what is needed and what can actually be done by the parties to a conflict to spare the civilians. It also ensures that medical and humanitarian teams are protected and can perform their duties in a dignified manner.'

Cheaper flights from Beirut? Count us in! Lebanon's national carrier, Middle East Airlines (MEA), is officially looking into launching a low-cost Lebanese airline – and yes, that could finally mean affordable travel to Europe and the Middle East straight from Beirut. The plan is to create a budget airline under the MEA group, but fully independent. MEA chairman Mohamad El Hout told The National: 'We are thinking of preparing within the next two years to launch a low-cost airline under MEA, starting with four aircraft.' But it all depends on finding the planes. MEA's currently hunting for aircraft in a super competitive market. If they manage to get them, the new airline would focus on popular routes where people are looking for cheaper options. We all know how expensive it can be to fly out of Beirut. So, hearing that MEA is looking to offer a budget option (just like many other international airlines already do) is kind of a big deal. Recently, low-budget airline Wizz added a route between Dubai and Beirut. There are also plans to build a new terminal at the Beirut airport to serve up to 5 million passengers and potentially make room for more affordable airlines. PM Nawaf Salam recently said that Lebanon's second international airport, the Rene Mouawad Airport in Qlayaat, will be rebranded and launched soon. The new airport is expected to focus on cargo and low-cost travel.

First Romanian flight brings stranded Lebanese home from Sharm El-Sheikh

The first Romanian flight carrying Lebanese nationals stranded in Sharm El-Sheikh landed this morning at Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport. The passengers had been unable to return home due to regional airspace closures following the recent escalation between Israel and Iran, which disrupted commercial flight operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, under the guidance and coordination of Minister of Public Works and Transport Fayez Rasamny, intervened promptly. In coordination with the relevant airline and the local tour operator, the airline submitted an urgent request to operate repatriation flights. The directorate granted preliminary approvals and instructed the company to proceed with the necessary arrangements. Additional similar flights are expected to arrive throughout the day as part of the effort to ensure the safe return of all affected Lebanese travelers.
