Kroger doubles up on ice cream giveaway offering 92,000 pints to celebrate summer

Yahoo4 days ago

This Friday is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.
If you're looking for a way to kick off summer, how about some tasty and cool scoops of ice cream? And for free!
It's time to scream, or rather download, for ice cream.
Kroger is back with a freebie to start the summer season by dishing out coupons for tens of thousands of pints of ice cream to celebrate.
This year, the nationwide grocer is doubling down on its offer, giving away more than double last year's 45,000 pints.
On Friday, Kroger will make available a downloadable coupon giving away 92,000 pints of its Kroger brand ice cream or, according to a news release, 1,000 pints for each of summer's 92 days.
While that sounds like a lot of ice cream, the giveaway is online and valid across the Kroger family of stores nationwide, including in Michigan.
According to a Kroger news release, the offer isn't valid in California, Colorado, Louisiana, Tennessee and Nevada or at its Mariano's, Metro Market, Pick 'n Save and QFC stores.
"Last year, we were blown away by customer excitement for our free pint offer and this summer we are making it even sweeter," said Mike Murphy, group vice president of center store merchandising at Kroger, in a news release.
At noon Eastern time, Friday, June 20, customers can go to FreeKrogerIceCream.com to download a digital coupon. Coupons are available only while supplies last, and each coupon is for a single use. The coupon is valid from Friday through the Fourth of July. When Kroger offered the free, downloadable coupon last year, coupon supplies were depleted shortly after the 8 a.m. release. And if you don't get a free coupon for Kroger Brand of ice cream, customers can get a digital coupon, which goes live also at noon on Friday, for $1 off two Kroger brand pints of ice cream.

Fireside Nights: A take on classic s'mores is this toasted marshmallow-flavored ice cream with s'mores pieces and "glittering swirl that radiates the orange hue of a campfire flame."
Sandy Shores: Coconut-flavored ice cream "reminiscent of crystal-blue seas" with a sweet and salty pretzel crunch.
Poolside Tan Lines: Swirls of vanilla bean, chocolate and coffee ice creams.

Major grocery chain to close over 60 locations by end of 2026

Kroger will be closing more than 60 stores it considers underperforming across the U.S. by the end of 2026, according to a recent announcement by the grocery chain. The news was part of Kroger's first-quarter earnings report, which was released on Friday. It states that the closures are expected to provide the company a "modest financial benefit." "In the first quarter, Kroger recognized an impairment charge of $100 million related to the planned closing of approximately 60 stores over the next 18 months. As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit," the company said in the report. Kroger said it aims to reinvest the money it saves through the closing into improving its customer experience at other stores. "Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance," the company said. The report was also clear to mention that none of the forthcoming changes signal a need for layoffs. Employees at the affected stores will be offered roles in other stores, according to the report. The company's first-quarter earnings fell to $866 million, down from $962 million during the same quarter last year. Its total sales were also down, from $45.3 billion last year to $45.1 billion this year. Despite the first quarter losses, the company still increased its full-year earnings forecast to between 2.25 percent and 2.35 percent growth. The chain said that demand for its fresh food, store branded products, and its digital services is strong and will likely remain so throughout the year. While the company is closing stores by the end of next year, it also announced plans to open around 30 new stores by the end of this year. Kroger operates nearly 2,800 stores in the U.S. under the name Kroger as well as Ralphs, King Soopers, Fredy Meyer and Harris Teeter. The company is currently in the process of selecting a new CEO after its previous CEO, Rodney McMullen, resigned in March amid an internal ethics investigation. Sign in to access your portfolio
