Stampeders sign six-time CFL all-star LB Adam Bighill to practice roster
CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders have signed linebacker Adam Bighill to their practice roster, the club announced Sunday.
Bighill, 36, is a three-time winner of the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award, an eight-time West Division all-star and a six-time league all-star.
The five-foot-nine, 230-pounder from Montesano, Wash., has won three Grey Cup rings – one as a member of the BC Lions and two with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
However, the 12-year veteran was released by the Bombers in January and has yet to suit up in 2025. He stated in a social media post following the release that he planned to keep playing.
He began his career in 2011 with the Lions, who he spent six seasons with before playing for the NFL's New Orleans Saints in 2017. He returned to the CFL in 2018 with the Bombers, who he spent the following six seasons with.
Bighill ranks sixth in CFL history with 939 defensive tackles. He also has 39 tackles for loss, 71 special-teams stops, 50 sacks, 15 interceptions including one pick-six, 11 fumble recoveries including three returned for touchdowns, 14 forced fumbles and 25 knockdowns.

Zach Collaros makes season debut, Winnipeg Blue Bombers thump B.C. Lions 27-14
VANCOUVER - Zach Collaros threw for 179 yards with two touchdowns on Saturday, powering the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 27-14 victory over the B.C. Lions in his first game of the CFL season. The veteran quarterback connected on 18 of his 25 attempts and had two interceptions after missing Winnipeg's season opener last week due to suspension for failing to respond to an off-season drug-testing request. Jeremiah Masoli was 25-for-44, passing for 281 yards with one major and two interceptions in his first-ever start for the Lions (1-2). The 36-year-old American quarterback replaced Nathan Rourke as starter after Rourke suffered a core injury in B.C.'s 34-20 loss to the Blue Bombers last week. Winnipeg (2-0) was also without one of its stars in Saturday's rematch as Brady Oliveira sat out with a shoulder injury he picked up against the Lions. Collaros wasted no time in finding his form Saturday. Just over seven minutes into the game, the veteran escaped the pocket under pressure and hurled a rainbow into the far corner of the end zone where Dalton Schoen jumped up to make the grab. The 15-yard touchdown pass capped a 72-yard, 12-play scoring drive. The Lions responded with their own extended series, but couldn't break into the red zone and settled for a 22-yard field goal from Sean Whyte early in the second quarter. Sergio Castillo matched the score minutes later, booting a 55-yard kick through the uprights to boost Winnipeg's lead to 10-3. B.C.'s offence struggled to gain traction through the rest of the half. Midway through the second quarter, Masoli — who signed with the Lions as a free agent in February — tossed a harried pass to running back James Butler, who fumbled the ball. Parker was there to pick it up and sprint 57 yards the other way for the Bombers' second major of the night. Castillo hit the convert and Winnipeg took a 17-3 lead. The Lions got a glimmer of hope later in the frame when defensive back Cristophe Beaulieu picked off Collaros' deep throw to Nic Demski and darted up the sidelines 40 yards. Masoli and the B.C. offence couldn't make anything of the interception and punted on third down. Winnipeg hit the home side's confidence hard once again before both teams headed into the locker rooms, with Parker picking off Masoli's pass to Jermaine Jackson. Castillo upped Winnipeg's lead to 20-3 early in the third quarter with a 38-yard field goal. Whyte replied minutes later, booting a 43-yard kick for B.C. The Lions began stringing plays together early in the fourth quarter and found themselves with a first yard deep in Bombers territory. Masoli sailed a pass to Ayden Eberhardt deep in the end zone, only to see it picked off by Winnipeg's Evan Holm. B.C. then challenged the play, saying there was no catch, but a review upheld the call on the field. On the next play, Collaros chucked a pass way up field to Keric Wheatfall for a 48-yard gain. The Bombers' continued to build and Collaros capped the drive with a five-yard dish to offensive lineman Tui Eli in the end zone. Another convert from Castillo gave Winnipeg a 27-6 advantage. The Lions refused to go quietly, though. Masoli and his team steadily worked their way up the field and inside Winnipeg's 10-yard line, where they were stymied by the Bombers defence and turned the ball over on downs with less than five minutes to go. Another interception gave B.C. a final prime opportunity late in the fourth quarter. Robert Carter Jr. nabbed Collaros' pass inside Winnipeg territory and the Lions capitalized, with Masoli firing a seven-yard dart to Jevon Cottoy just over the goal line. Ottawa Redblacks weather conditions, down Calgary Stampeders for first win of CFL season
Redblacks 20, Stampeders 12 The Ottawa Redblacks did what they had to for their first win of the Canadian Football League season Saturday. On a windy, rainy and cold afternoon at McMahon Stadium, the Redblacks used a strong running game, a stout defence and the kicking boot of Lewis Ward to hand the Calgary Stampeders their first loss of the season. In the 20-12 victory that improved the Redblacks record to 1-2 and moved them from last in the East Division into second place, Dustin Crum surely improved his standing from third-string quarterback to the primary backup behind the injured Dru Brown by not turning the ball over and picking up the W. Crum, who completed just nine of 22 passes because the conditions gave normally sure-handed receivers slippery fingers, ran 11 times for 64 yards. And, while William Stanback had his best game as a Redblack with nine carries for 82 yards, stealing the spotlight was his platoon partner in the backfield. Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye scored the game's only touchdown with 5:02 left, when he pulled in a nine-yard pass from Crum. Right before that, Adeboboye made the biggest offensive play of the day when he took a handoff and burst up the middle for a 52-yard gain. Adeboboye finished the game with 10 carries for 96 yards. The Redblacks' defence was credited with five turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception by safety Charlie Ringland, and stopped the Vernon Adams Jr.-directed Calgary offence for the third time on a third-down play to seal the outcome. Ward was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts with scoring boots of 34, 22, 26 and 33 yards before a late 48-yard attempt hit the left upright and stayed out. The Redblacks also cleaned up a trouble spot by taking just four penalties for 26 yards. They held a 6-2 first-half lead that could have been mistaken for the score of a Senators-Flames National Hockey League game. On Ottawa's first possession, Crum ran three times for 30 yards during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Ward field goal from the 34. When Calgary's Rene Paredes was wide with a 43-yard field-goal attempt later in the first quarter, Devonte Dedmon returned the ball to Ottawa's 12-yard line, but the Redblacks' Robert Priester was called for an illegal block, and the ball was brought back to the one. Two plays later, Crum was sacked in the end zone by Jaylon Hutchings. It was the third time in two games that a Priester penalty preceded points by the opposition. In last week's loss to Montreal, he was flagged for horse-collar tackles before an Alouettes touchdown and a field goal. Ottawa took a 3-2 lead over Calgary late into the first half because of three turnovers forced by the defence. Along with a fumble recovery by defensive back Amari Henderson, the Redblacks 'stopped' Calgary when Clark Barnes dropped an Adams end-zone pass and again when defensive back Adrian Frye snuffed out an attempt by short-yardage QB P.J. Walker. It was another big play in a road game for Frye, who had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the season opener. From that goal-line stand, the Redblacks ran a 12-play drive powered by Stanback to set up Ward's 22-yard field goal. Stanback, who entered the game with 16 carries for 55 yards on the season, ran the ball seven times for 76 yards on that series alone. Ward's second field goal was made possible because Eugene Lewis, who last week had his consecutive games with a touchdown catch streak ended one short of the CFL record, dropped a Crum end-zone pass that hit him in the numbers.
