Second Shot at Love – K-drama Episode 1 Recap & Review
Episode 1
Episode 1 of Second Shot at Love begins with Dr. Seo Ui-joon giving a seminar on Prevention and Treatment of Alcoholism. He talks about how South Korea is too tolerant about alcoholism. He mentions that anyone can be an alcoholic, even a smart and hard-working person.
It cuts to Han Geum-ju, a brilliant senior engineer at an automobile repair shop. She is an alcoholic and one night, she makes a fool of herself in public. The next morning, Ju-yeop, her fiancé gives her an ultimatum. She chooses alcohol over him and breaks their engagement.
Her mom, Gwang-ok berates her for it. However, Geum-ju points out that Ju-yeop dated her because she was a party animal and only started nagging once they decided to marry. She sees no issue with social drinking and believes it is needed to keep up relationships at the workplace.
Unfortunately, she loses her job and is unable to pay the rent. Her mother takes her home and spins the narrative so it seems that they broke the engagement because the mother-in-law is a diva.
As they arrive in their hometown, Bochun, they pass by Ui-joon who heads out to treat his elderly patients. He is patient and friendly, ensuring that the elders are taken care of. He even does the fieldwork for an old woman and entertains the rest of the ladies. He is a natural farmer and we learn that he used to help his grandmother.
At the Hans', Geum-ju arrives to her father, Jeong-su and her older, divorced sister, Hyeon-ju day drinking. Gwang-ok scolds them and we learn that they are responsible for introducing alcohol to Geum-ju and normalising drinking. Gwang-ok declares that there will be no more drinking.
Hyeon-ju's twins love Geum-ju and she takes them to the town park. As they play around, she rants to her friend about Ju-yeop. Unfortunately, one of the neighbouring ladies overhears and soon the truth of her canceled engagement spreads like wildfire. While some pity her, many look down upon her. She runs into an old friend, Seon-wook who scolds her as well.
They visit Young-woong, a mechanic friend who struggles with a car. Geum-ju thinks out of the box and fixes it. But she is annoyed to learn that it is Ui-joon's car. We learn that they were close but something happened between them. He was a hotshot doctor in Seoul and was welcomed with fanfare when he recently opened a clinic in Bochun.
A flashback to 2007 shows Geum-ju running into Ui-joon who is a transfer student. His cycle is broken and she offers to fix it. She is chatty and flexes that she is the town genius. He is shy but watches her with awe.
At present, she runs into him. He is cordial but she lashes out at him. Her grocery bag tears but she refuses his help. He plays along and runs off which annoys her. Once his face turns away from her, he looks sad.
Meanwhile, Gwang-ok overhears her friends gleefully gossiping about how both her daughters are a mess. She is further upset when she goes home and finds her husband and daughters secretly drinking.
She calls Geum-ju selfish and Geum-ju is upset that no one understands her. A flashback shows Ju-yeop having an affair. The mistress is pregnant and he vows to break off the engagement. It is why Geum-ju gets drunk at the beginning of the episode. She breaks off the engagement first because she wants to have control and save face.
The next morning, Gwang-ok drags Geum-ju on a hike to a temple and tries to donate 1 million won to stop her drinking. Upset, Geum-ju steals her phone and runs off. Ui-joon finds Gwang-ok running after her daughter. She asks for his help but he reasons that the first step to quitting is to be aware that one has a problem.
That night, Seon-wook and Young-woong set up a surprise reunion for Ui-joon and Geum-ju. Ui-joon arrives first and the three men talk about her alcoholism. Ui-joon had wished that when they met again, she would be a much better person. Having just arrived, Geum-ju overhears and runs off. She drinks and wishes she was a better person.
At home, it is her grandfather's memorial service. The extended family is present and Gwang-ok refuses to serve alcohol, blaming the family for ruining Geum-ju. But she believes in Geum-ju and is sure she will come to her senses.
Unfortunately, Geum-ju arrives drunk and makes a scene. A makgeolli bottle falls at Gwang-ok's feet. She explodes and tries to beat Geum-ju up while the rest try to separate them.
The next morning, Geum-ju wakes up and Ui-joon approaches her. Her top is missing and she is scandalised. He begs her to stop drinking.
In the Second Shot at Love Episode 1's epilogue, Geum-ju promises to fix Ui-joon's cycle in 3 minutes. It cuts to nightfall and he teases her. She sulks and he wipes the grease off her face. They are flustered and he tries to get her to leave. She refuses as she wants to prove herself. She finally fixes it but her scooter runs out of power. He takes her home on his cycle.
The Episode Review
Second Shot at Love Episode 1 introduces a sensitive topic but in a lighthearted manner. Which means this show can go either way. Given that alcoholism is a prevalent issue all over, but especially in South Korea, the K-drama has a responsibility to tread carefully. It is still too early to judge it but it seems that they are trying.
We get the perspectives of both parties and how they are affected by Geum-ju's alcoholism. While the first episode hashes out how it affects the people around her, particularly her mother and very likely her first love, it also explains why Geum-ju does what she does. It is clear that her father and her sister are her enablers and it has been an issue way before her fiancé cheated on her. However, it also shows Ju-yeop's hypocrisy with how he enables her drinking and then nags her for it to ensure that he gets a docile wife.
While all the subtext and nuances can create a heavy atmosphere, so far, Second Shot at Love has done a good job of balancing it out with the comedy. Even the difficult and toxic scenes like Gwang-ok beating Geum-ju during the memorial are followed by funny moments like Geum-ju finding herself at Ui-joon's place. The cast keeps it light and portrays likeable characters even though they are flawed and messy. We really do hope that the show is able to do justice to the story and its characters.

JJ Slater feeling ‘insecure' as Katie Price blasted over being ‘disrespectful'
As Katie Price faces backlash for partying with celebs in Ibiza, a source says that her antics will be tough on her boyfriend JJ Slater - and fans urge him to 'dump her' Katie Price' s outrageous bikini-clad antics in Ibiza have sparked calls for her reality star boyfriend John 'JJ' Slater to dump her. The 47-year-old let her hair down last week on a wild trip to the party island, where she was snapped cosying up to a number of shirtless men – including some very famous faces. And her behaviour didn't go down well back home, with Katie accused of being 'disrespectful' towards Married At First Sight UK hunk JJ, 32, who she started dating early last year. However, despite the flood of negative comments, a source tells OK! the warnings will fall on deaf ears and that 'Katie is just being Katie'. 'She can't help but flirt and cosy up to people – it's the life she's always led,' said our source. 'She thinks it's all just a bit of innocent flirting because she's a very loud and larger than life character, but for her boyfriends it's another thing. 'Seeing your girlfriend in a tiny bikini surrounded by a load of topless men is bound to make anyone feel a bit insecure, and JJ is no exception. He's put up with a lot and it's not easy dating someone as famous as Katie. It's not nice for him to see the photos. 'He's aware of what people are saying and he tries to ignore the comments, but it's not easy.' The former glamour model – who was joined for part of the trip by her son Junior Andre, 20 – was snapped partying with former UFC champion Conor McGregor, EastEnders star Dean Gaffney and night club boss Wayne Lineker, owner of the island's famous O Beach club. Her social media posts quickly attracted a slew of critical comments from fans expressing their shock, with many of them calling on JJ – who previously dated his MAFS co-star Ella Morgan – to 'dump her' over her disrespectful behaviour. 'I am in a long-term relationship and out of respect for my partner I wouldn't pose like this with another man,' one follower wrote. Another demanded, 'How can you pose with men like this when having a so-called partner back home?' Other comments included, 'I'd dump her if I was JJ, she's just rubbing his nose in it', and 'JJ should dump her.' Katie got together with JJ in early 2024, a few months after she split from her ex-fiancé Carl Woods, 36. She recently described JJ as 'the most kindest, genuine, easygoing, chilled person'. But she admitted she still didn't feel free or at her 'happiest'. 'It's not a reflection on him, maybe that's what I need to change for myself,' she told Celebs Go Dating's relationship guru Paul C Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast. Katie has often said that men have been her biggest 'downfall', and once admitted she sought out 'neediness' and ended up in 'toxic relationships'. As well as her failed marriages to Peter Andre, Alex Reid and Kieran Hayler, Katie has a string of other famous exes, including footballers Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham, and rugby player Danny Cipriani. She dated her most recent ex, Carl, for three years. He recently accused her of being unfaithful, claiming she cheated on him multiple times and that he'd caught her messaging several footballers, including a 'very famous' England star. However, Katie's camp hit back, describing him as 'another ex cashing in on Kate'. The star flew out to sunny Spain shortly after having her Brazilian bum lift topped up. Dressed in a bikini, two bloodied plasters on the injection sites were visible on her buttocks. But it was the photos of Katie with UFC legend Conor, 36, and footie icon Gary Lineker 's brother Wayne, 63, that created the biggest furore. According to our source, while JJ trusts Katie and knows she's happy with him, he's not immune to feeling insecure over her antics. 'While JJ is a really patient man, everyone has their limits,' the source said. 'He's been there for her through all her surgeries, her bankruptcy hearings, helping with Harvey, so he wants to feel like a priority, not a spare part. 'He knows that she loves him and that she appreciates that he treats her differently to some of her exes, so he works hard to not let it get to him. And he knows that at the end of the day, it's him she comes home to.'

Second Shot at Love Season 1 Review – A wholesome K-drama with a mediocre ending
Season 1 Episode Guide Episode 1 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 2 -| Review Score – 2.5/5 Episode 3 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 4 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 5 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 6 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 7 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 8 -| Review Score – 3/5 Episode 9 -| Review Score – 2.5/5 Episode 10 -| Review Score – 2.5/5 Episode 11 -| Review Score – 2.5/5 Episode 12 -| Review Score – 2.5/5 Mini slice-of-life K-dramas hit just the right spots and usually crop up right after a barrage of intense, ambitious and melodramatic shows. They are perfect for a quick binge session with light angst that is quickly resolved, lovable ensembles and hilarious antics. We can easily recall several such wholesome shows like Once Upon a Small Town, Summer Strike and Hometown Cha Cha Cha. And the latest to join this genre happens to be Second Shot at Love. Second Shot at Love is an exciting K-drama from tvN which is known for fun rom-coms like Lovely Runner, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and True Beauty. Said to be a wholesome rom-com, it has everything from small-town chaos and drunken mistakes to first love and healing. The cast includes Choi Soo-young, Gong Myung, Jo Yoon-hee, Kang Hyung-suk, Kim Sung-ryung and Kim Sang-ho among others. It is created by writer Myung Soo-hyun who is known for comedies with a message like Monthly Magazine Home and Drinking Solo. The K-drama follows Han Geum-ju, a genius mechanic and bubbly woman who loves drinking. But after her engagement falls apart, she loses her job and her apartment, her mother, Gwang-ok, tries to get her to stop drinking. As she is forced to move back to her home town, she struggles to come to terms with her alcoholism and the need to get sober. It doesn't help that her sister and father are alcoholics as well and seem to join her in her drunken antics. On top of that, Geum-ju's former best friend and first love, Dr Seo Ui-joon, hates alcohol and constantly preaches the treatment of alcohol abuse. Despite having a successful practice in Seoul, he moves back to their home town and is more than happy to ignore Geum-ju, much to her annoyance. Second Shot at Love Season 1 is the perfect mini-healing drama as it is full of minor conflicts which are quickly resolved. Along with it, all the characters grow, heal, find love and acceptance. The light and peppy music, paired with the bright and cheerful town of Bochun, sets up the atmosphere for Geum-ju and her friends to grow and get better. The physical comedy is hilarious and actually needed to stop the show from getting too heavy, given the tackling of a difficult issue like alcoholism. But don't worry, the show doesn't take it too lightly either. With alcohol abuse being a rampant issue in South Korea, it seems that the studio has taken it upon itself to churn out a gentle PSA with this show. Without getting too didactic, it explores the different perspectives of those who drink and the bystanders who are affected by it. It ends up fleshing all the secondary characters and giving them their own, relatable storylines like that of Gwang-ok, Geum-ju's sister and even the town gossip. The cast also puts on a commendable portrayal of sharing the story of Bochun's alcoholics, clowns and well-wishers. Soo-young plays into Geum-ju's desperation and co-dependency while also keeping it light and funny with all the goofy moments her character finds herself in. Those who watched Second Shot at Love live will definitely get whiplash from Gong Myung playing a psychopath in Mercy for None and then the lovable dork that is Ui-joon in the same breath. And Kim Sung-ryung deserves a shout-out as her Gwang-ok steals the scene, whether with a hilarious chase sequence or an emotional rant. Unfortunately, there is a melodramatic plot twist near the end involving damaged livers and transplants. Its purpose is to help the characters empathise with those suffering and to help them grow. The only problem is that the characters have already grown and accepted their mistakes, making the transplant twist unnecessary, except to add some spice to the story. This seems to be a recurring problem, as the main story is wrapped up in the first 10 episodes. And the final two episodes are reserved for a sudden thriller involving Ui-joon's missing parents. This is the second whiplash of this series, given that it completely changes the tone and is quite unnecessary as well. Had the writers never introduced this thriller subplot in the first place, maybe this wholesome K-drama and Han Geum-ju could have gotten the ending they deserve.
