Spotlight on Michael Misa as Saginaw Spirit forward emerges as elite playmaker ahead of 2025 NHL Draft

Michael Misa, an explosive center for the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit, is rapidly making a name for himself as the 2025 NHL Draft's best prospect. His spectacular skating, phenomenal hockey IQ, and historically high level of offense make him a unanimous No.
1 overall pick candidate — especially for a team like the New York Islanders, which is in desperate need of a play-changing forward.
Michael Misa provides Islanders, Sharks, or Blackhawks with premium-level offensive firepower
Is Michael Misa an obvious pick for Sharks at No. 2 overall?
With a resume already distinguishing himself as an exceptional status, OHL scoring titles, and a Memorial Cup championship, Michael Misa delivers more than potential — he delivers proven output. The 17-year-old winger recorded 134 points as a member of the Saginaw Spirit last season, pacing the league and tying with John Tavares for the most under-18 point total in the OHL since 2000.
That combination of output and genealogy is the reason why teams like the New York Islanders, San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Blackhawks are keeping tabs.
For a franchise such as the Islanders, which does not have top-end offensive prospects beyond Calum Ritchie and Cole Eiserman currently, Michael Misa would become an instant centerpiece of their rebuild. His skating and vision could pair with star forward Mathew Barzal and bring much-needed imagination to New York's locked-up forward corps.

Michael Misa is only the eighth player in OHL history to have been given exceptional status, which is bestowed upon players deemed ready to play at the major junior level a year ahead of schedule. Other names to have earned that moniker include Connor McDavid, John Tavares, and Aaron Ekblad — all eventual first-overall NHL draft picks. Although Misa has had a few injury setbacks on his path, he has always provided top-level production, with a full-range offensive arsenal and excellent leadership skills.
In 2022–23, Misa fought through injury to pace Saginaw in points at age 15. He took his game up another notch the next season with 75 points in 65 games. This season, he dominated completely, finishing 10 points ahead of the next-best OHL scorer and helping the Spirit charge to a Memorial Cup title.
A game-changing center with NHL first-line potential
Misa's recent center success has drawn scouts from all around the league. Most young forwards spend years jumping between wing and center, but Misa thrived in the middle this season, playing with elite edge work, effortless puck control, and an ability to create controlled zone entries with ease.
Experts such as Scott Wheeler and Corey Pronman of The Athletic call him a dynamic skater with misleading explosiveness, premium-level creativity, and the kind of potential to be a legitimate No.
1 center in the NHL.
Why is Michael Misa such an asset to struggling NHL teams?
The New York Islanders' offense has lacked consistency behind Mathew Barzal. Michael Misa would provide them with a ready-made scoring dynamo who could be the start of a new era for the franchise. The San Jose Sharks, already having Macklin Celebrini, could pair Misa with last year's No.
1 pick to create a frightening 1-2 center combination for the future.
And for the Chicago Blackhawks, getting the playmaking minds around Connor Bedard is a priority. Having accumulated defensemen in recent drafts, Chicago could see Misa as the missing ingredient to unleash the maximum potential of Bedard.

A trade rumor indicates that NHL free agency 2025 is set for a wild ride with $10M deals, surprise offer sheets, and Aaron Ekblad buzz

Aaron Ekblad #5 of the Florida Panthers celebrates with the Stanley Cup (Credit: Getty Images) The 2025 NHL free agency market is expected to heat up quickly, thanks to a sharp increase in the salary cap and limited top-tier talent available. With this combination, multiple players could likely secure contracts north of the $10 million average annual value. Mitch Marner remains the most obvious candidate to land the league's richest deal, as teams line up to lure the star winger away from Toronto if an extension doesn't materialize. Aaron Ekblad to Buffalo Sabres is gaining serious traction One of the boldest free agency predictions centers around Aaron Ekblad potentially leaving Florida and signing with the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres have a strong young core, but after years of playoff absence and growing pressure internally and externally, they may be ready to make a serious move. With over $23 million in cap space and the need for a right-shot defenseman to pair with Owen Power, Buffalo could offer Ekblad a $10 million deal that not only boosts their blue line but also signals a shift in franchise expectations. Aaron Ekblad | Journey to the NHL Mavrik Bourque and Will Cuylle could sign offer sheets Offer sheets are rare in the NHL, but this summer might buck the trend. While names like Matthew Knies and Marco Rossi have drawn attention, teams may take a different route. Dallas Stars forward Mavrik Bourque is a prime target. The second offer sheet prediction involves New York Rangers forward Will Cuylle. His power-forward style and 20-goal season make him an attractive piece. At 6-foot-3 and over 215 pounds, Cuylle brings the physicality and production that teams want in a playoff run. Jonathan Toews returns home: NHL veteran signs with Winnipeg Jets for comeback journey

Image Via Getty (Jonathan Toews returns home: NHL veteran signs with Winnipeg Jets for comeback journey) At 37 years of age, Jonathan Toews finds himself ready to once again lace up the skates, not for just any team but for the home team, the Winnipeg Jets. After leaving the NHL due to health issues, the three-time Stanley Cup champion is making a comeback in the league with a one-year deal expected to come to fruition on July 1. This move brings him back to Manitoba, and given the anticipated return to the shape of the veteran center, hopes of him making an impact in the 2025 season are rekindled. Jonathan Toews adds veteran poise and winning mentality to the Winnipeg Jets The arrival of Jonathan Toews to Winnipeg is much more than just a nice hometown return. It is good reinforcement for a team facing leadership voids, with captain Adam Lowry expected to sit out at least until the start of the season because of a late-stage hip surgery. Toews comes in-proven leader and an added forward. Formerly captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, Toews is a 15-year veteran of the NHL elite and a three-time Stanley Cup champion at that. For Winnipeg, Toews offers NHL prowess, face-off dominance, high-pressure composure, and a great hockey sense: traits that almost defined the Blackhawks' heyday. Through 2023, he had an absence from the ice due to immune-related health complications, but Toews' resurrection hints at his not only physical and mental recovery, but also his return to embracing top-level competition with a palpable tang. Kevin Cheveldayoff, Jets GM, emphasized the special qualities of a player with Toews' background: from the intimate knowledge of his hometown to his competitive nature, to his joining locker-room experience under a proud player. He further enunciated that Toews' presence alone could provide a stabilizing voice for young teammates and perpetuate the winning culture. It could not be a better time for him to join. Winnipeg, making inroads in the past few seasons, can surely benefit from Toews' seasoned insights and offer him a skilled and tested playoff mindset. With a very long layoff, his role may be a transitional one at first. Yet predominantly, his impact will exceed just numbers on the stat sheet. (Credit: X/@TSN_Sports) The New York Islanders appear to be going all in ahead of the NHL Draft. According to multiple reports, they are aggressively pursuing a second top-10 pick to go alongside the one they already hold. The rumored goal is to select both star defenseman Matthew Schaefer and local standout forward James Hagens. Boston Bruins open to trading seventh overall pick for roster-ready player The Boston Bruins, owners of the 7th overall pick, are reportedly willing to part with the selection if it lands them a player who can help immediately. Their front office has made it clear they are more focused on improving the current roster rather than adding another developmental prospect. According to reports from RG Media's James Murphy and Stefan Rosney, talks between the Bruins and Islanders have become increasingly serious. Sources close to the situation suggest that Boston's priority is to add a top-six forward or a top-four defenseman if they are to surrender such a valuable draft position. Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov floated as trade options In order for the trade to materialize, the Islanders would have to offer more than draft capital. Reports indicate that defensemen Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov, along with forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau, have come up in trade discussions. Among the trio, Dobson would be the most impactful piece. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The 24-year-old logged a career-best season and has grown into one of the Islanders' most dependable blue liners.
