At 37 years of age, Jonathan Toews finds himself ready to once again lace up the skates, not for just any team but for the home team, the Winnipeg Jets. After leaving the NHL due to health issues, the three-time Stanley Cup champion is making a comeback in the league with a one-year deal expected to come to fruition on July 1.
This move brings him back to Manitoba, and given the anticipated return to the shape of the veteran center, hopes of him making an impact in the 2025 season are rekindled.
Jonathan Toews adds veteran poise and winning mentality to the Winnipeg Jets
The arrival of Jonathan Toews to Winnipeg is much more than just a nice hometown return. It is good reinforcement for a team facing leadership voids, with captain Adam Lowry expected to sit out at least until the start of the season because of a late-stage hip surgery.
Toews comes in-proven leader and an added forward. Formerly captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, Toews is a 15-year veteran of the NHL elite and a three-time Stanley Cup champion at that.
For Winnipeg, Toews offers NHL prowess, face-off dominance, high-pressure composure, and a great hockey sense: traits that almost defined the Blackhawks' heyday. Through 2023, he had an absence from the ice due to immune-related health complications, but Toews' resurrection hints at his not only physical and mental recovery, but also his return to embracing top-level competition with a palpable tang.
Kevin Cheveldayoff, Jets GM, emphasized the special qualities of a player with Toews' background: from the intimate knowledge of his hometown to his competitive nature, to his joining locker-room experience under a proud player. He further enunciated that Toews' presence alone could provide a stabilizing voice for young teammates and perpetuate the winning culture.
It could not be a better time for him to join. Winnipeg, making inroads in the past few seasons, can surely benefit from Toews' seasoned insights and offer him a skilled and tested playoff mindset.
With a very long layoff, his role may be a transitional one at first. Yet predominantly, his impact will exceed just numbers on the stat sheet.

Such a profoundly full-circle moment has been brought forth by Jonathan Toews' decision to sign with the Winnipeg Jets. A term used more than simply as a comeback, but for resilience, identity, and unfinished business on the ice. Toews could potentially be one of the greatest infamous free agents of any season.

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill, Jonny Bairstow's heated sledging war resurfaces

Shubman Gill of India (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) NEW DELHI: As Shubman Gill marked his captaincy debut with a brilliant unbeaten century at Headingley on Friday, an old verbal exchange between him and England's Jonny Bairstow resurfaced online, going viral across cricket circles. The clip, originally from the final Test of the 2024 India-England series in Dharamshala, captures the two batters engaging in a light-hearted yet sharp sledging battle. The moment unfolded after Gill had scored a fine century but was soon dismissed by James Anderson. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Reportedly, Gill had earlier told Anderson, who had just become the first pacer to take 700 Test wickets, that he should retire. When Bairstow came out to bat in England's second innings, he decided to revisit the conversation. Bairstow: "What did you say to Jimmy about him retiring?" Gill: "I told him he should retire." Bairstow: "And then he got you out next ball?" Gill: "So what? He can get me out after my 100." Bairstow: "100 percent." Gill: "How many hundreds do you have this series?" Bairstow: "How many have you scored, full stop?" Watch: Though the exchange ended with smirks, the scoreboard soon tilted India's way. Bairstow was dismissed just four balls later by Kuldeep Yadav, and India won the match by an innings to seal the series 4-1. Poll Who do you think performed better in the sledging exchange: Shubman Gill or Jonny Bairstow? Shubman Gill Jonny Bairstow Both were equally entertaining Neither, it was just banter Now, months later, Gill has led from the front in his first innings as India's Test captain, scoring a commanding 127 not out against England in the series opener at Headingley. Yashasvi Jaiswal credits Shubman Gill after maiden Test ton in England: 'I love it' With Jaiswal's 101 and Pant's unbeaten 65, India finished Day 1 on 359/3, firmly in control. The resurfaced sledging video has added another layer of drama to the new series. While England, without Bairstow, look to regroup, Shubman Gill's performance, both with the bat and as leader, signals a confident new era for Indian Test cricket. 'Yoga is our culture, and it should be part of everyday life,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi , addressing a grand yoga gathering on the Visakhapatnam coastline, echoed a more global sentiment. IND vs ENG: Michael Vaughan criticises Ben Stokes' bowling decision as India dominate Day 1

England captain Ben Stokes, (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed astonishment at England's decision to bowl first against India on a dry Headingley wicket in the first Test, as India dominated day one by reaching 359 for 3, with Shubman Gill scoring an unbeaten 127 and Yashasvi Jaiswal contributing 101. England captain Ben Stokes opted to field first despite hot and humid conditions offering minimal assistance to bowlers on the dry surface. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds The decision may have been influenced by recent history at Headingley, where teams bowling first have won the last six Test matches. "I am an old school traditionalist. Here at Leeds, when the sun is shining, with dry weather, you bat," Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. "You look at the England side and their strength is in the batting. And there is inexperience in the bowling at the moment. Ben clearly had a gut feeling, and sometimes it has worked." Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Vaughan emphasized that current conditions should determine decision-making rather than historical precedents. "You always have to pick your decisions on that moment, and not things that you did here years ago or at other times. It can't affect what the decision is today," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beachfront Living in Mumbai at Sunteck Beach Residences Sunteck Realty Learn More Undo Vaughan acknowledged the challenge of containing runs on a good batting surface but noted Stokes remains optimistic. "It was a good pitch, so it's not easy to restrict runs. Ben Stokes is still positive and he will come back tomorrow saying 'let's get seven wickets'," he said. Vaughan reserved final judgment on the pitch conditions until seeing Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah bowl. "We won't know that for sure until we see Jasprit Bumrah bowl on it. He can bowl you out with anything. Until I see that, I will hold my judgement on how flat this pitch is," he added. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
