AI 171 crash: 22 more DNA samples of victims matched, says Gujarat minister Sanghavi
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that 22 more deceased in the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad have had their DNA samples matched. With this he said that a total of 42 deceased in the tragedy have been identified so far through DNA sampling.
'Update as of 1.00 pm- From 9 PM last night to 1 PM today, our teams have worked tirelessly to match DNA samples. We are pleased to report that an additional 22 DNA samples have been matched, bringing the total to 42 matched DNA samples so far,' Sanghavi said in a post on X today.
'Ongoing Efforts: State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit team and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples,' he said.
Sanghvi said that former Chief Minister Late Vijay Rupani's DNA had also been matched.

By 9 PM on Saturday, 19 samples had been matched, with the state home minister sharing regular updates regarding DNA sampling of the victims.
Addressing a press conference at the residence of former Gujarat CM Rupani, Sanghavi said, 'Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India crash in Ahmedabad on 12th June. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has matched. He worked for the people of the state for several years..,'
The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples.
According to Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghavi, DNA examination is critically needed to identify the victims of the tragic crash, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective.
On Saturday, Ahmedabad Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr Rajnish Patel said a total of 31 DNAs have been identified and 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members.
'The bodies of 31 DNAs have been matched. 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives', he told reporters.
Air India has announced that an interim financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh (approximately GBP 21,000) will be provided to the 'families of the deceased and to the survivor' of the tragic crash after the plane rammed into a doctors' hostel in the Meghani Nagar area in Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. In a post on X, the Tata-owned airline stated that the package was in addition to the Rs 1 crore support already announced by Tata Sons.
On Thursday, the Air India flight AI171 was en route to London from Ahmedabad when it crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport, ramming into a doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College in Gujarat's Ahmedabad.
There were 242 people on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. (ANI)

CBI books former chief manager of JNPA, others in ‘Rs 800 crore corruption' case linked to dredging project in Mumbai
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Sunil Kumar Madabhavi, former chief manager of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), as well as several private individuals and entities in connection with alleged corruption of over Rs 800 crore involving the Capital Dredging Project at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai. The case, registered on June 18, 2025, stems from allegations that a criminal conspiracy was orchestrated between JNPA officials and a consortium of private firms, one based in Mumbai and the other in Chennai, to siphon off public funds under the guise of project payments. A private consulting firm, which acted as the project management consultant for JNPA, is also under investigation for its role in the matter. This includes M/s Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), Mumbai; its director Devdutt Bose; M/s Boskalis Smit India LLP, Mumbai; and M/s Jan De Nul Dredging India Pvt Ltd, based in Chennai According to the CBI, the alleged irregularities occurred during the execution of a Capital Dredging Project aimed at deepening the port's navigational channel to accommodate larger vessels. During Phase-I of the project, JNPA reportedly made excessive payments, adding up to Rs 365.90 crore to contractors for supposed over-dredging work. However, the payments came under scrutiny after it was revealed that during Phase-II, which coincided with the maintenance period of Phase-I, an additional Rs 438 crore was disbursed under the claim that no over-dredging had taken place in the previous phase, thereby contradicting earlier assertions. In coordinated search operations across five locations in Mumbai and Chennai, CBI teams raided the residences of former JNPA officials, offices of the involved private companies, and the premises of the consulting firm. Officials recovered a large cache of project-related documents, digital devices, and evidence, allegedly indicating illicit investments made by public servants linked to the scam. 'The seized materials are currently under examination, and further inquiries are underway to determine the full scope of financial irregularities and identify all individuals involved,' a CBI spokesperson said.

Air India faces DGCA action over crew safety violations; Suspends airline's head of crew rostering
India's civil aviation regulator has pulled up Air India for serious and repeated violations of crew safety norms, ordering the removal of three senior officials, head of crew rostering, from their positions in the airline's scheduling department. The aviation watchdog has asked the Tata Group-owned airline to initiate internal disciplinary proceedings against these officials without delay. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA ) has identified Choorah Singh, Divisional Vice President, Pinky Mittal, Chief Manager - DOPS, Crew Scheduling, and Payal Arora, Crew Scheduling - Planning directly, responsible for the continued non-compliance. The action comes after Air India voluntarily disclosed that flight crew were being scheduled and operated in violation of licensing, flight duty time, and rest period regulations, key requirements for flight safety. DGCA, in a letter issued on June 20, said the violations were uncovered during a post-transition audit following the airline's shift from the ARMS platform to the CAE Flight and Crew Management System. Ahmedabad crash: DGCA orders Air India to remove 3 officials; roles related to crew scheduling
NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Saturday directed Air India to remove its three senior officials from all roles related to crew scheduling and rostering, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. As per the report, one of those named is a divisional vice president at the airline. On 12 June, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, tragically crashed into a hostel at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar, shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Of the 242 people aboard, 241 died, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, along with dozens more on the ground.
