Forward Township residents remain worried, frustrated about Center Avenue Bridge closure
People living in Forward Township, Allegheny County, say a crucial bridge is out of commission and it's creating a huge hassle.
The span has been closed for just a few months, but those who use it say it's already been way too long.
The bridge is essential for connecting Forward Township and Elizabeth Borough.
Now, people living on the forward Township side of the of the bridge say it might as well be the Golden Gate because without its access, they must drive a significant distance to get to Route 51, and residents are worried if it doesn't get fixed quickly, something terrible might happen due to the lack of access.
Barricaded and looking beat up, the Center Avenue Bridge was closed a few months back after PennDOT determined it needed major repairs. Add to that a sewage line under the span needed to be moved as well, and people have not been shy to voice their displeasure with the closure.
"It's big for me. It's big for everyone else. It's a small bridge, but you can't stop your life because of a damn small bridge," resident Cecilia Fox said.
Fox says the tiny span requires a large detour if you want to head to the other side.
"I must travel every day to Blaine Hill to babysit, it usually takes me five minutes at most. Now, you've got around the long country roads and whatever," Fox added.
Fox says a bad storm a while back had her finding a detour for the bridge detour.
"A couple of days ago, I was coming home, we had lightning and thunder, rain and whatever, and a tree fell on the road."
"I go to work at 4 o'clock, 5 o'clock, early in the morning, and drive all those back country roads with deer in the snow, it's been bad," fellow resident Karen Klimkos said.
Klimkos says she's in the same boat when it comes to detours.
Both women also worry about emergency services access with the bridge down when seconds count.
PennDOT says they're working on it.
"That's always what we hear. Where? Where are they working on it?" both women opined.
KDKA-TV spoke to Forward Township officials, who say they have completed the sewage line work.
PennDOT says it will start prep work to repair the bridge next week. If all goes as planned, the small bridge that means big things for residents will be done in about six weeks.

Arnold Palmer Regional Airport hosting 2025 Westmoreland International Airshow this weekend
Arnold Palmer Regional Airport is celebrating 100 years of airshows with an air spectacular this weekend, and there is a lot of excitement in the sky around Latrobe. The Shop 'n Save Westmoreland International Airshow is set to take place, rain or shine, this Saturday and Sunday. This show is being dubbed an international airshow because one of the big headliners this year, the Royal Canadian Air Force's Snowbirds, who flew south from Saskatchewan, Canada, to help make this weekend a success. Captain Marc-Andre Plante says that there is a very special relationship between the United States and Canadian militaries, and the Snowbirds are proud to be in the U.S., performing a show for people they consider friends. "At the speeds that we are flying at, about 300 knots or about 300 miles per hour, we will fly at 300 feet over the ground," Captain Plante said. "And given our maneuvering, we are able to do an entire show while maintaining in your field of view, which is an advantage that we have over faster aircraft." While the Snowbirds will be delighting in the sky, there is plenty for people to do on the ground, with everything from seeing souped-up muscle cars to getting photos with rolling food like the Big Idaho Potato Truck and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Still, the air is where the show is, and this show will be a special one for Major Taylor Hiester, who is not only the commander and a pilot for the F-16 Viper Demo Team, but he's from Reading, Pennsylvania, and a proud Penn State graduate. "As a Pennsylvania native, to come back to my home state, to be here and perform for the people in Pennsylvania is a dream come true," said Major Hiester. "We can't tell you how honored we are for the hospitality as we start the show here at the Westmoreland County International Air Show." Nakheel issues $204m infrastructure contracts for Palm Jebel Ali, Dubai
Nakheel, part of Dubai Holding Real Estate, has issued three major contracts for infrastructure works on Palm Jebel Ali in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Totalling more than Dh750m ($204.1m), these contracts are said to be a 'significant milestone' in the ongoing development of the waterfront destination, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. DBB Contracting, a construction company within the Dutco group, has been selected for these projects. The company has a history of working on the island, including previous infrastructure projects such as public access and road construction. UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum initiated the Palm Jebel Ali development, which supports the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The infrastructure scope includes utility connections, ground works, road and pavement construction for Fronds A to G, and related utility works for 11kV power distribution and telecoms. The Spine District's infrastructure works will comprise utility mains, connections to utility links on the fronds, and major and secondary road construction. It also involves rough grading for the DEWA power transmission line serving the area, including associated works. Palm Jebel Ali spans 13.4km and features seven islands with 16 fronds and more than 90km of beachfront. It aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan's commitment to expanding public beach access and is poised to support waterfront living with mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods offering Arabian Gulf views. The development will provide residents and visitors with diverse recreational spaces, smart city technologies, sustainable practices, and mobility solutions to enhance connectivity. Dubai Holding Real Estate CEO Khalid Al Malik said: 'Palm Jebel Ali exemplifies Dubai's ambition to redefine global waterfront living through an innovative luxury lifestyle mega project. "The iconic development is set to transform the city's urban landscape in alignment with the leadership's vision to create a world-class destination that will attract residents, tourists and investors. We are pleased to extend our association with DBB Contracting LLC, a partner whose proven expertise and unwavering dedication to quality will help ensure the successful delivery of this important project." In October 2024, Nakheel awarded contracts worth more than Dh5bn for a luxury villa development on the island. Earlier this year, Nakheel entered a partnership with six architecture companies to design ten unique styles for The Beach Collection villas at Palm Jebel Ali. "Nakheel issues $204m infrastructure contracts for Palm Jebel Ali, Dubai" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
