'Mission Buniyaad' comes to abrupt halt; no reason cited by government
Speaking to the newspaper, MCD education director Sanjay Singh said, "We discontinued the programme from this year. We are still discussing and getting clarity on the issue. There was no direction from the Delhi government on this. However, we have organised two camps in our schools – fun camps and summer camps."
However, Director of Education Veditha Reddy did not respond to any queries.
Meanwhile, the former education advisor during the AAP government, Shailendra Sharma, said, "This government claims to be committed to implementing the NEP 2020, but actually they are just violating it. NEP says the policy itself will only become relevant if all students learn to read, write and do basic arithmetic. Mission Buniyaad has been doing precisely that. By stopping it abruptly, the BJP government proves once again that they are not serious about education."
On April 5, this newspaper had reported that after the Education Minister's announcment that schemes implemented by the previous government will be discontinued, most government schools had dropped Mission Buniyaad from time tables.
Parents in lurch
The discontinuation of the programme has also sparked deep concerns among parents, especially those from economically weaker sections. For them the programme was more than an educational support system – it was a source of daily nourishment and dignity for their children. Knowing that their children would receive at least one nutritious meal daily, gave many families a sense of relief.

Directorate Of Education To Implement Age 6 Criteria For Class 1 Admissions
Age Six Criteria: The Directorate of Education (DoE), GNCT of Delhi has directed all the concerned authorities to implement the minimum age requirement of 6 years for Class 1 admissions starting from the academic session 2026-27, in alignment with the provisions of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009. The foundational stage has also been restructured to include three years of pre-primary education before Class 1. The NEP 2020 replaced the 10 +2 structure with the 5+3+3+4 structure, reorganizing school education into four developmental stages: five years of the foundational stage, three years of the preparatory stage, three years of the middle stage and four years of the secondary stage. The DoE has instructed All the Heads of Government, Government-Aided, and Recognized Unaided Private Schools to implement the changes from the academic session 2026-27. The Foundational Stages of school education will be reorganized as per the NEP 2020 and include three years of pre-primary education before Class 1. Children will be admitted to Nursery (Bal Vatika/Preschool 1) at age 3, in Lower KG (Bal Vatika/Preschool 2) at age 4, and the last pre-primary level includes Upper KG (Bal Vatika/Preschool 3) for children aged 5. "A child may be admitted to Class I only upon completion of 6 years of age from Academic Session 2026-27 onwards" the official circular stated. To make the process more inclusive and participatory, all stakeholders - teachers, parents, students, School Management Committees, educational institutions, school associations, professionals, subject experts, scholars and members of the general public have been invited to share their suggestions before July 10, 2025.

IAS officer, her husband, and personal security officer booked for attempt to murder in Jalandhar
An FIR has been registered in the case where a plot owner was shot by the personal security officer (PSO) of IAS officer Babita Kaler on Saturday morning in a posh locality near PIMS Hospital in Jalandhar. The FIR was lodged late Saturday night at Police Station Division No. 7. The FIR names senior IAS officer Babita Kaler, her husband and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Stephen Kaler, and Sukhkaran Singh, the PSO provided by the Punjab Government. The case has been registered under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act. The victim, Harpreet Singh, suffered a bullet injury in his leg. The police have arrested Sukhkaran Singh and taken possession of the weapon used in the incident. A recommendation has also been sent to the police department to suspend Sukhkaran Singh. The police will soon present him in court to seek remand for interrogation. Sources said the police were preparing to issue notices to Babita and Stephen Kaler, asking them to join the investigation. Harinder Singh Gill, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated they will determine why the shooting occurred — whether it was necessary or done under pressure – during the interrogation. IAS officer Babita Kaler and her husband Stephen Kaler, who live in the upscale Baradari area, reportedly had a dispute with the owners of the adjacent plot over the dumping of soil. During an altercation, Babita Kaler's PSO Sukhkaran Singh shot the brother of the plot owner. The bullet was fired using a government-issued firearm. AAP leader Stephen Kaler stated that the people who came to dump soil were asked to speak to the plot owner. He said he facilitated the conversation and then went inside the house. However, during this time, the individuals who had come to dump the soil allegedly began arguing with the PSO and used abusive language. They also reportedly tried to assault him, after which the PSO fired in self-defence.

Delhi CM leads yoga on banks of Yamuna, vows clean-up
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday performed yoga on the banks of the Yamuna River on the occasion of International Yoga Day, taking a swipe at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. She said her act aimed to highlight her administration's commitment to cleaning the river - something she alleged the AAP government failed to do despite years of promises. Besides the CM, her ministerial colleagues, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Mayor, and others participated in yoga sessions at various locations across the national capital. The Delhi government organised programmes at 11 prominent locations in the city to mark the occasion, with ministers, MLAs, and BJP MPs actively participating in the celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, the CM emphasised that Yoga Day should not be seen as a one-day event but rather as a lifestyle choice. 'A healthy citizen is the foundation of a prosperous nation,' she said, reiterating that turning Delhi into the health capital of the country is a shared responsibility. On choosing the Yamuna bank as the venue, she said, 'The purpose was to show people that the cleaning work of the river is underway. Yamuna is a symbol of our faith, but the previous governments ignored it. They did not work to clean it. But in the four months that we have been in power, we have made significant efforts toward its rejuvenation.' Targeting the AAP, Gupta said the previous government chose not to celebrate Yoga Day because of its association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'If they associate yoga with Prime Minister Modi, what can we do? Tomorrow, he might leave his food too if it's linked to the PM. After seeing the BJP government in Delhi, he left the national capital,' she remarked.
