Boeing's Transparency Push as Air India Investigation Continues

Boeing is pledging open communication and its commitment to 'long-term values' as it navigates the fallout from last week's Air India crash. The investigation into the June 12 tragedy involving a 787 Dreamliner plane is ongoing.
Speaking at a media briefing attended by Skift on the fringes of the Paris Air Show, Darren Hulst, Boeing's VP of Commercial Marketing, offered fresh insights into the company's position.
While the cause of the crash remains unknown, Boeing has emphasized its support for the official investigation being conducted under ICAO's Annex 13 framework. Both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been recovered. This is a critical step in helping officials determine what happened in the final moments of the flight.
Hulst confirmed that Boeing is providing on-the-ground support to Air India, a role he said will continue throughout the investigation: 'We will continue to support our customers. We're there on the ground today with our partners at Air India to support them, and that is not going to change.'
Long-Term Impact on Boeing Unclear
Asked if the crash could affect future demand for Boeing products, Hulst said it was hard to answer the question given the early stage of the investigation.
However, he did underscore the importance of transparency and trust: 'There's too many things that we don't know… but the relationships, the transparency, and the focus that we've had in working with our customers… that's a function of the long-term values that we've had for safety and quality.'
Despite last week's tragedy, Hulst suggested that passengers shouldn't have concerns about traveling on a Boeing plane: 'I'm confident, our customers are confident, and the flying public should be confident in that dedication in terms of what that means for the safety of our aircraft.'
It comes as an exclusive Skift Research survey of Indian travelers, conducted after the June 12 accident, highlighted fragility in traveler confidence. Of the respondents who had recently taken a flight, 51% said they had actively avoided certain airlines over the past year due to safety concerns. An additional 28% said they steered clear of specific routes or situations. Only 5% reported having no concerns about airline safety at all.
The surveillance of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet has not revealed "any major safety concerns" so far, Indian civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said June 17. The DGCA added that "the aircraft and associated maintenance systems were found to be compliant with existing safety standards."
Boeing's Broader Challenges
There's no indication at this stage that Boeing is responsible for the crash. However, its association with the tragedy is unwelcome.
The company was already navigating a years-long safety crisis following the two fatal 737 Max crashes and the Alaska Airlines blowout incident.
The 787 was also the center of a congressional hearing last year when multiple whistleblowers testified about alleged safety issues to the Senate subcommittee on investigations. The incidents and subsequent fall-out have seen Boeing lose billions of dollars and multiple executive shuffles in recent years.
Boeing recently reached a $1.1 billion deal with the U.S. Justice Department over fatal 737 Max crashes of 2018 and 2019, which would allow it to avoid criminal charges. As part of the deal, Boeing has to admit to obstructing federal oversight, offer compensation to the victims, and work to improve its safety, compliance, and quality programs.
Despite the negative headlines, demand for Boeing products remains robust. The company recently reported its highest number of plane orders since December 2023, with gross orders reaching 303 aircraft in May. The firm delivered 45 aircraft in May – matching April's total, and nearly double year-over-year – as it works to improve production.

One of the best ways to deal with shoplifting is to prevent it from happening in the first place. That's the goal of Paris-based AI startup Veesion, which has developed an algorithm that can recognize gestures to predict potential retail theft incidents. "I happen to have an uncle in Paris that runs and operates three supermarkets, so I exactly know what shoplifting represents for retailers," cofounder Benoît Koenig told Business Insider. Veesion said its tech is deployed in 5,000 stores across Europe, Canada, and the US. The startup recently raised a $43 million Series B funding round to further its expansion into the US. The alarm over shoplifting has subsided somewhat over the past year as retailers and law enforcement have gotten a better grip on the problem. Earnings call mentions of the term "shrink," the industry term for missing inventory, have come down significantly among the major retailers Business Insider tracks, according to data from AlphaSense, an AI research platform. But even though shoplifting is making fewer headlines (especially compared to retail's splashy new AI capabilities), Koenig said the problem remains a compelling one to tackle with machine learning. "It's not glamorous, but the ROI is quite direct," he said. "You're going to arrest shoplifters, recover inventory, and save money." One key difference between Veesion's tech and some other visual security approaches is that it says it doesn't rely on individual tracking or physical characteristics that could raise concerns about bias or personal privacy. "The algorithm doesn't care about what people look like. It just cares about how your body parts move over time," Koenig said. The system analyzes footage from the existing security camera network to detect humans in the picture, identify their movements, and recognize various objects, such as merchandise, carts, baskets, or bags. If a movement is deemed suspicious, a video clip is flagged and sent to store security personnel, who can then investigate or intervene. Security teams can update the app with additional details about whether the alert was necessary, whether a theft was stopped, or how much a stolen item was worth. Koenig said more than 85% of alerts are marked as relevant for the store operators using the Veesion said one US client was able to cut their losses from the health and beauty section in half in the first three months of implementation. Many US retailers have responded to the shoplifting problem by locking up items or limiting the ways people can shop, but that approach increasingly appears to be backfiring in the form of declining sales and worsening customer experiences. "Retailers have implemented a number of security measures — many to the detriment of the shopping experience — to protect merchandise from theft and to keep their employees and customers safe," the National Retail Federation said in a December report on retail crime. By layering onto a store's existing security camera infrastructure and alerting staff to specific risky behavior, Veesion says its tech can help create a more pleasant shopping trip. Koenig said the tech can also help reduce employee theft, which industry groups estimate costs retailers as much as shoplifting does. "It has an internal deterrent effect," Koenig said. "They know there is an AI in the cameras, so they're going to be careful with what they do." There are further retail use-cases that Veesion is exploring too, including improper scans at self-checkout to slip-and-fall detection. For now, Koenig said the tech is not just effective at detecting and disrupting would-be shoplifters — it also deters them from coming back. "This is much more than just recovering a few bucks," he said.

5 trends that could make more money for Rolls-Royce shareholders

To say Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR) shares have made investors richer over the past few years would be an understatement. The stock has topped the FTSE 100 over two, three and five years, up 475%, 907% and 671%, respectively! I don't see Rolls-Royce generating the same returns again, especially when there's a risk of a global recession. Along with the escalating Middle East war, this could lead to a near-term reduction in travel demand. Meanwhile, the stock is pricey at 37 times forecast earnings. It's arguably due a breather after sprinting uphill so fast. However, I do think it will do well long term. Here are five reasons why I think Rolls-Royce is still worth considering. Let's start with its bread and butter, which is engines for widebody aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. It's not just about selling engines, of course, but the lucrative revenue that follows from keeping them running. So, the most supportive trend here is rising long-haul travel. According to the International Air Transport Association, global passenger numbers are forecast to double over the next two decades, reaching 8.6 bn by 2043. This will be driven by an exploding middle class across Asia and the Middle East. Rising international travel will obviously necessitate more planes and engines, which should underpin growth in Rolls-Royce's key civil aerospace division. Next, the firm's defence unit should benefit from Europe's forthcoming defence spending boom. This is going to cost hundreds of billions of euros, and will involve upgrading ageing fleets of jets, submarines, and military vehicles. Many EU members will require modern propulsion systems for new frigates and naval vessels, along with engines for military transport aircraft and helicopters. The European Commission aims to mobilise €800bn over four years. As things stand, UK defence firms will be able to bid for some EU defence contracts. And that will almost certainly provide opportunities for Rolls' defence division. Another big trend here is an increase in data centres, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Rolls-Royce supplies backup and mission-critical power systems for data centres. It ended last year with over 85,000 units installed, providing over 10GW of back-up power. This gave the firm a market share of around 20%. Its battery energy storage solutions are now in over 140 projects worldwide. As the AI revolution advances, many more data centres will be needed, providing growth opportunities for Rolls-Royce's power systems unit. Next, the engine maker intends to return to the single-aisle airplane market in the years ahead, preferably through a partnership. If so, this will extend the company's overall market opportunity, and CEO Tufan Erginbilgic is very keen on doing so. Finally, also looking further out, Rolls-Royce has a massive emerging market in small modular reactors (SMRs). These mini power plants can be built in factories and deployed where needed, helping countries to meet net zero commitments. In 2024, Rolls-Royce SMR was named the preferred supplier for the Czech Republic. Recently, it won the UK competition, and is in the final two in Sweden. Poland, Romania, and the Netherlands are also interested, as well as tech giants wanting to power data centres. According to IDTechEx, the global SMR market could reach $72.4bn by 2033 and $295bn by 2043.
