Prince William and Kate inspired huge rise in sweet royal name but fall in another

Daily Record05-05-2025

The most influential celeb baby names have been unveiled, including some young Royals.
Parents thinking about what to name their children may turn to many sources for ideas. Films, holiday destinations, precious gemstones, or names that run in their family may be considerations.
But what about celeb baby names? Hollywood stars undoubtedly have a lot of influence over areas like fashion and beauty, but it turns out the rich and famous are the first port of call for many when it comes to inspiring trends - and baby names are no exception.

It comes as new research by Irish Casino Sites analysed Office for National Statistics data to track rises and drops in baby registrations that share their name with a celebrity's baby. And the Royal Family fared very well.

Prince Louis, the youngest of Prince William and Kate Middleton's three children, was born on April 23, 2018. His name dramatically rose in popularity in the year after his birth, with a 56 per cent increase in registrations.
This means that in 2019, the name Louis more than doubled, showing a hold over UK parents. However, even the royals can't guarantee naming success. The Prince and Princess of Wales' other choices had mixed results.
When the couple named their first child - and future king - George in July 2013, the following year saw a slight two per cent dip in use. It is unclear what that might be down to, considering the nation's excitement over the birth.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son Archie had no real impact on British naming patterns. There was virtually no change in popularity despite the global attention.
Elsewhere, the study shows that Jennifer Lopez's daughter had the biggest influence on baby names in the UK, with 1,075 per cent more babies called Emme in the year after her birth.

Parents in the UK opted for the name Emme after J-Lo and Marc Anthony welcomed their twin babies in 2008. The name shot up from just four registrations the year before to 47 in the following year.
Janet Jackson is the second most influential celebrity parent. When she named her son Eissa in 2017, the name saw a 400 per cent rise from three registrations the year before to 15 the following year.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner triggered a similar 390 per cent surge with daughter Violet's birth in 2005, with the name attached to 50 registrations the year before the birth, then rising to 245 the year after.
But while some choices inspired expecting parents, others put them off. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's choice of Marion saw registrations drop by 77 per cent, from 13 registrations the previous year to just three in the following year.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson also appeared in the bottom 10, with his daughter Tiana's name dropping by 27 per cent in use.
"Parents appear more likely to choose a celebrity-inspired name when it's an unusual choice like Emme or Eissa, as these are more clearly linked to a specific celebrity parent," Mark Knight from Irish Casino Sites said. "Old-school names like George don't get the same boost as they have many associations beyond a single celebrity baby.
"It'll be very telling to see how recent celebrity arrivals inspire naming trends this time next year, like Elon Musk's 'Seldon' or Princess Beatrice's 'Athena'. We'd expect names to fluctuate based on the popularity of the celeb parent as well as the individuality of the name, as you often can't separate one from the other."

EastEnders' Ali Osman star is unrecognisable after co-star's tragic death

Ali Osman was a firm favourite in Walford when he was part of the original cast of EastEnders, with his character being involved in a number of gripping storylines Die-hard EastEnders fans will never forget Ali Osman. Nejdet Adamson, a member of the original cast of the much-loved British soap, played the character and became a household name in Walford some 40 years ago before he jetted off to chase his Hollywood dreams. During his time on Albert Square, Ali was embroiled in intense storylines involving marital breakdowns, the grief of losing a child, and a troubling gambling addiction. He also ran the café, then-known as Al's Café, alongside his wife Sue, played by actress Sandy Ratcliff - and later started a taxi firm, OzCabs, alongside his brother Mehmet, running it from a corner table in the café. Sadly, Sandy – who was also an original cast member – died alone in sheltered housing from an accidental overdose, back in 2019. She was 70 years old. ‌ ‌ After leaving EastEnders, 66 year old Nejdet made a dramatic career switch from Walford to Hollywood, landing a role as a short sailor in the blockbuster hits Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and its sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl pulled in a whopping 654.3 million USD, while its sequel, Dead Man's Chest, amassed a global total of $1.066 billion. Post-EastEnders, he bagged a role in Carry On Columbus as Fayid, sharing the spotlight with comedy icon Rik Mayall. But he hasn't been shy about discussing his professional struggles, confessing on the soap's 25th anniversary in 2010: "I have had to live with Ali for 25 years. I'm just trying to get on with my life." Maintaining a low profile, he added: "I don't give interviews. I am still acting but it is hard when everyone I'm still Ali from the café," reports OK!. Nej also popped up in two episodes of TV comedy drama Auf Wiedersehen Pet, and has had parts in Doctor Who and Wall of Silence (2004). While juggling the life of a small-time actor, Nejdet even briefly moved to Hollywood in 1990. ‌ However, Tinseltown wasn't all it was cracked up to be for the actor. His marriage to drama school love, Susan Stevens, ended in 1990, just a year after they tied the knot. Before his marriage to Stevens, Nejdet had a fleeting romance with his EastEnders co-star Linda Davidson, who played Mary Smith. He remains active in showbiz, having starred in crime drama Sleep Warm a few years ago, and recently featuring in horror flick Heckle. The actor boasts an estimated personal net worth between £1 million to £5 million. Originally known as Nej Salih, he adopted the name Nej Adamson after his stint on EastEnders ended in 1989. He continues to call London home.
