A nine-month pregnant US citizen was hospitalised after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Hawthorne, California, sparking outrage and renewed scrutiny over immigration enforcement practices.
Cary Lopez Alvarado, 28, was apprehended by ICE on June 8, just a week before her due date. According to Lopez Alvarado, agents 'shoved her", causing her to lose her balance as she tried to shield her stomach. 'They started grabbing me from both sides, and I ducked down to sort of shield my stomach because I was afraid they were going to hurt me," she told Telemundo 52. She added: 'I told them it [her due date] was June 17, and they said, 'OK, your baby is going to be born here, but you're from Mexico, right?' And I told them no."
'I was born here," Alvarado told Telemundo 52 in Spanish. 'I was born in Los Angeles, I was born in Hollywood Hospital."
NBC Los Angeles reported that after her release, Alvarado experienced sharp stomach pains and was subsequently hospitalised, with doctors closely monitoring her and her unborn child following the ordeal.
What Led to the Arrest
The incident began when masked men in Border Patrol uniforms followed a vehicle carrying two undocumented workers, including Alvarado's partner, into a private parking lot, NBC reported. Alvarado and her cousin, both US citizens, opened the gate for the group. When agents attempted to enter the property, Alvarado blocked the door and asked them to leave, citing private property rights. Agents, however, claimed the parking lot was not private and proceeded to arrest Alvarado, her partner, her cousin, and the co-worker.
Public Outcry and Context
The case has drawn widespread condemnation, especially as it comes amid intensified immigration enforcement efforts. President Donald Trump has pledged to launch the largest mass deportation effort in US history, with increased ICE raids and stricter border controls.
Advocacy groups and community members have called for accountability and greater oversight of ICE operations. 'This incident raises serious questions about the treatment of US citizens and the protocols followed during immigration enforcement," said a spokesperson for a local immigrant rights organisation, as reported by NBC News.
The incident comes amid several thousand people taking to the streets of New York City to protest the immigration policies of Trump, after a series of raids by ICE sparked protests across the country.
'No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here," chanted protesters who initially gathered at Foley Square, a plaza in front of a courthouse where several migrants were detained by law enforcement, news agency AFP reported.
The march in New York was more peaceful than its counterpart in Los Angeles, where ongoing demonstrations between protesters and police have spurred Trump to deploy thousands of National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines.

Man gets ₹26 lakh for unpaid salary without working for even a day; company loses case in court

An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a company to pay a man Dh110,400 ( ₹ 26 lakh) for unpaid wages. The man was hired but never allowed to start work. He filed a case asking for salary from 11 November 2024 to 7 April 2025. His contract promised a basic salary of Dh7,200 ( ₹ 1.70 lakh) and a total monthly pay of Dh24,000 ( ₹ 5.65 lakh). But, the company kept delaying his joining date without paying him, according to the Khaleej Times. The company's lawyer asked the court to move the case to another department. However, the court found that the delay was the employer's fault, based on salary records and contract documents. The UAE court ruled in favour of the employee, saying wages must be paid on time as per the Labour Law. The law clearly states that a worker's salary is their right and cannot be held back unless the worker has officially agreed to it or the company has legal proof, according to the publication. In this case, the employer claimed the worker didn't report to duty and took leave. However, the court found no proper investigation to support this claim. The employee admitted to taking eight days off, which were deducted. The court ordered a salary payment for four months and 18 days. In an earlier story, a Spanish government worker, Joaquín Garcia, reportedly skipped work for at least six years, maybe even 14 years, while still receiving his salary. The truth came out in 2010, when he was about to get an award for long and faithful service to the city of Cadiz. The 69-year-old engineer had worked for the local government since 1990. In 1996, he was sent to the city's water department to oversee a sewage treatment plant. But, according to reports, he had not shown up to work for years.

Fury and fear rise across US as Trump's immigration enforcement intensifies

Live Events After night fell on the outskirts of Los Angeles on Thursday, around 50 people clanged metal pots and blasted air horns outside a hotel in a noisy bedtime protest targeting US immigration "No Sleep For ICE" rally underscored growing anger at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a once obscure agency that has become the focal point of President Donald Trump 's migrant crackdown."They terrorize our community the entire day. Why do they get a good night's sleep?" said Nathanael Landaverde, 23, who banged a dismantled frying pan at the images have shown federal agents, often masked and sometimes armed with assault rifles, chasing down migrants and handcuffing them at courthouses, farms and on the streets.(Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates)ICE officials have also detained some US citizens for allegedly intervening in arrests, including a mayoral candidate in New York this week. The heavy-handed approach has sparked fear among immigrants and infuriated many Americans, particularly in liberal cities such as Los Angeles, where large-scale street protests erupted this month over ICE raids."If they don't sleep they're not gonna do their job effectively. They're gonna get less people," added Landaverde, as passing vehicles honked in apparent support for the late-night was not certain whether ICE agents were staying at the three-star hotel, but protest organizers claimed to have photo evidence. Dozens of people danced to a deafening cacophony as they waved signs reading "No rest for ICE" and "ICE out of LA" towards the hotel, where some guests peered through the woman simply screamed into a megaphone. Another man wore earmuffs as he blasted distorted white noise through a speaker. "They're ripping families apart, and it's horrifying to watch in my community. They can't sleep if they're gonna do that here," said Juliet Austin, 22, who was playing a small blue was elected to a second term in large part for his promise to deport thousands of migrants. But alongside their aggressive tactics, critics have denounced federal immigration agents for wearing face masks to hide their identities -- a highly unusual but legal practice in US law enforcement."At what point will we as a nation find ourselves with a secret police?" Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute think tank, wrote last month. "For the Trump administration, turning masked raids into standard practice fits into a wider effort to dodge accountability for potentially illegal and unconstitutional actions," he California, lawmakers have introduced the "No Secret Police Act" that would restrict federal agents from wearing masks. Federal officials have rejected this criticism by claiming that agents wear masks to protect them from potential ICE has frequently boasted about its activities and posted pictures of detained migrants on social it crucially still enjoys Trump's support, who last weekend praised ICE agents' "incredible strength, determination, and courage." Still, anger over ICE looks unlikely to go away as long as immigration arrests continue, and protesters Thursday were adamant they would not back down."I think it's a modern Gestapo here in America," said Austin, a dance teacher. "This city is not the one to mess with... We're not gonna let it happen. We're not tired," she added.
