Police say church staff shot man with handgun and a long gun, averting a potential mass shooting

Yahoo6 hours ago

WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan police chief said church staff stopped a man armed with a handgun and a long gun, averting a potential mass shooting at a church west of Detroit on Sunday morning.
Chief Ryan Strong said parishioners at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne spotted the gunman driving recklessly and then saw him exit his vehicle wearing a tactical vest and carrying weapons. The man began firing as he approached the building during a church service and was confronted, Strong said at a news conference.
'A parishioner struck the gunman with his vehicle as the gunman shot the vehicle repeatedly,' Strong said. 'At least two staff members shot the gunman, causing the fatal wounds.'
Strong said the gunman's motive remains unclear, but it appears he was suffering from a mental health crisis.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. at the church in Wayne, a city of about 17,000 people some 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Detroit, the church's pastor, Bobby Kelly Jr., told the Detroit News earlier.
Kelly said a church member ran the suspect over with his truck, giving security staff time to shoot him. Police described the suspect as a 31-year-old white male.
Police said one person was shot in the leg.
The pastor said no one else was hurt and about 150 people were attending the service.
Worshipper Wendy Bodin said she heard a loud 'boom' and when she looked outside she saw a man sprawled out on the grass in front of the church. 'I thought he got hit or crashed his car or was hurt,' Bodin told WXYZ-TV. 'And another lady saw and pointed to me and said 'oh my, call 911!''
Wayne Police Deputy Chief Finley Carter III said earlier Sunday that it was too early to know a motive. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino tweeted that bureau 'leadership and support teams' were at the scene and helping with the investigation.
Messages left by The Associated Press on Sunday on voicemail and a Facebook page for the church were not immediately returned.

Man Opens Fire into a Michigan Church, Deacon Runs Him Over with a Truck to Stop the Attack

A shooting at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, on June 22 injured one person The attack ended with a deacon running the male shooter over and a church security guard fatally shooting him The church's pastor said the shooter did not appear to be a member of the congregationAfter a man opened fire on a Sunday service in Michigan, a church deacon and security guard stepped in to stop him. On the morning of June 22, there was an active shooter at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, a Detroit suburb, according to a spokesperson for the Wayne Police Department (WPD). A church security guard shot and killed the attacker before officers arrived on the scene, the spokesperson told PEOPLE. The security guard had time to take aim at the shooter — whom police identified as a 31-year-old White male — because a deacon ran him over, according to the pastor, who was on the scene. The attacker 'was run over by one of our members who saw this happening when he was coming into church," Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. told Detroit News. The deacon ran over the attacker in a Ford F-150 truck, the outlet reported. Only one person, whom Detroit News identified as a security guard, was injured in the June 22 attack. According to the local outlet, the shooter fired multiple shots into the church, but did not enter the building, where Kelly estimated that 150 people were gathered. Footage from a livestream of the service — which had more children in attendance than usual, per Kelly — shows the moment when those inside the church became aware of the attack. 'Get down,' someone can be heard saying, as people began to scramble. 'Everybody to the back. Please, everybody, come to the back,' a different church leader then states, directing the group to the rear of the building. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? In the wake of the attack, Kelly told Detroit News that CrossPointe Community Church members are supporting each other, and the children present for the June 22 attack are 'doing good.' As for the path forward, the pastor said, 'We will be convening our leadership to put a formal plan in place for the aftermath.' The pastor also said the attacker did not appear to be a member of the church. The investigation into the shooting is 'ongoing with multiple agencies on scene,' a spokesperson for the WPD told PEOPLE, adding that police will share more information in the evening of June 22. Michigan Church Deacon Ran Over Active Shooter With a Ford F-150 Truck: Reports

Parishioners at a church in Wayne, MI, ran for their lives in the midst of an active shooter scare. Outside, a deacon and security guard were teaming up in different ways to put an end to the threat. The moment the parishioners learned something was happening outside CrossPointe Community Church was captured on video. It turned out that a security guard at the church shot and killed the active shooter, according to Click on Detroit. Another person - later named as that security guard - was shot in the leg, the television station reported, adding that the church was live streaming the service when the shooting erupted. The Detroit News reported that the security guard shot the suspect after "a member ran the shooter over in a Ford F-150 truck." That member was a deacon at the church, the newspaper noted. "He was run over by one of our members who saw this happening when he was coming into church," Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. said to the Detroit News. The video shows a woman addressing the congregation before people started to become aware that something bad was unfolding off camera. They then ducked and ran out of the church. Wayne Police Deputy Chief Finley Carter told the Detroit News that the suspect, 31, was not a member. His name was not released. The motive was not clear. A "special vacation Bible school service" was being held at the church when the shooting occurred, but the active shooter never made it inside the building, the newspaper reported. The newspaper added that the church had added a security team in response to other violence that occurred at church in different areas of the Church Deacon Ran Over Active Shooter With a Ford F-150 Truck: Reports first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 22, 2025

A Michigan bear roamed the woods for two years with an awful lid on his neck. Not anymore.

Michigan wildlife experts finally were able to trap a black bear and remove a large lid that was stuck around his neck — for two years. 'It's pretty incredible that the bear survived and was able to feed itself,' state bear specialist Cody Norton said Wednesday. 'The neck was scarred and missing hair, but the bear was in much better condition than we expected it to be.' The bear first turned up on a trail camera as a cub in 2023 in the northern Lower Peninsula. After that, the Department of Natural Resources was on the lookout for the elusive animal with a hard plastic lid around the neck, Norton said. The bear appeared again on a camera in late May, still wearing the barrel lid, and the DNR responded by setting a cylindrical trap and safely luring him inside. The bear was immobilized with an injection and the lid was cut off in minutes on June 3. The bear eventually woke up and rambled away. Angela Kujawa, a wildlife biologist who was at the scene, said she wondered about the bear's ability to climb trees with the uncomfortable accessory. 'And he probably laid more on his back or side when he was resting,' she said. Norton said it's not precisely known how the lid got stuck on the bear's neck. Bear baiting is legal in Michigan, but the hole on a barrel lid typically must be large enough to avoid what happened to this bear. The bear weighed 110 pounds (49.9 kilograms), which is fairly typical for a 2-year-old. 'We were pleasantly surprised. It was still able to make a living like a pretty typical bear,' Norton said.
