NEW YORK (AP) — Shoeless Jazz crossed the plate, a century after Shoeless Joe. Both of Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s cleats flew off his feet as he scored from second base in the New York Yankees' 4-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in an unusual morning start Sunday. 'I was so sweaty. My socks were wet. Everything had just slipped straight out,' he said. Chisholm doubled twice, including a go-ahead, two-run drive off the right-center field wall in the eighth inning, then slid into catcher Gary Sánchez for the final run as New York put the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. The AL East-leading Yankees won their second straight after losing seven of eight in a game that will be remembered for Chisholm's size 10 1/2 Jordan 1 spikes. Shoeless Joe supposedly was given his nickname on June 6, 1908, playing semi-pro ball for the independent Greenville Spinners against the Anderson Electricians. New cleats had caused blisters, and he took them off and hit a long home run in the seventh inning. Jackson won a World Series title with the Chicago White Sox in 1917, then was among eight players on the so-called 'Black Sox' who were banned for life after they were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 Series to Cincinnati in exchange for money from gamblers. He finished with a .356 average in 13 major league seasons. Asked whether he should be called Shoeless Jazz, Chisholm responded: 'Wow. Is that how Shoeless Joe got his name? He ran out of his shoe?' When told Jackson earned nickname in the 1910s, Chisholm quipped: 'Oh, so he wasn't wearing shoes.' 'I saw a lot of firsts,' Yankees captain Aaron Judge said. '11:30 game to a guy losing both his shoes. I've seen one cleat kind of running but not both like that. That was awesome.' Chisholm is hitting .350 (21 for 60) with 11 RBIs since returning from a strained right oblique that caused him to miss 28 games. He raised his average to .242. 'That's what I live for. That's how I grew up playing baseball in high school, Little League,' he said. 'I don't feel like it's no need to change.' New York trailed 2-0 when Chisholm hit a two-out double off Dean Kremer and headed for home on DJ LeMahieu's single to left. Chisholm's left shoe popped off between third and home. Seeing rookie catcher Maverick Handley move to his left for Colton Cowser's throw up the third-base line, Chisholm tried to veer to avoid contact. He caught the catcher with his right arm as Cowser was spun to the ground and the ball popped out of his mitt. Chisholm fell past the plate as the right shoe was jarred off and from his knees slapped a hand across the plate. 'He had dirt all over his face when I walked out there to get him. Looked like glitter on his face,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'We were all kind of screaming.' After he reached the dugout, Chisholm stretched out with his stockinged feet on the bench. He put on a fresh pair of socks and then his spikes, and Chisholm asked rookie Jasson Domínguez to tie the laces. 'They say he's the best shoe tier,' Chisholm recalled in the postgame clubhouse. 'I didn't understand it until he actually did. It took me like a minute to take off my shoes just now.' Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed that Scherzer would return to the mound after Toronto's 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. 'That's a huge, huge addition to us, you know?' said Schneider. 'It's Max Scherzer. 'I'll take that any day of the week.' The 40-year-old surefire Hall of Famer signed a one-year, US$15.5 million contract with Toronto on Feb. 4. However, Scherzer only pitched three innings for the Blue Jays on March 29, allowing two runs on three hits. He left that game early with thumb inflammation on his throwing hand before being placed on the injured list the next day. Scherzer had a bullpen session earlier Sunday after two promising rehab starts with triple-A Buffalo last week. Schneider said Sunday's session was a productive workout for Scherzer, that included simulating conditions against the Guardians' potent lineup. 'I think that getting to 75 pitches in his last start is a good thing, and we've got to just monitor it as he goes,' said Schneider. 'The fact that he's feeling good throwing his stuff, he knows his stuff is where it should be. 'Really, really excited to have him back.' Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner as the best pitcher in his league and an eight-time all-star. He has a 216-112 record over his 18-year MLB career, with a lifetime 3.16 earned-run average and 3,408 strikeouts. 'Hopefully he's back with us the rest of the year,' said fellow starter Chris Bassitt. 'It solidifies our rotation a lot more where the bullpen doesn't have to be as relied upon as it has been. 'Hopefully we get Max back to what he usually does, and then take some pressure off of (Jose) Berrios, (Kevin Gausman) and I having to eat innings and things like that.' Eric Lauer will start for Toronto on Tuesday and Gausman will pitch on Thursday. The Blue Jays are 4-6 in their last 10 games, sitting third in the American League East but holding the second wild card berth. Blue Jays' Max Scherzer expected to come off the IL and start on Wednesday at Cleveland
TORONTO (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. 'He's ready to go,' Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches. Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning. 'Really, really excited to have him back,' Schneider said. 'That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week.' At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo. The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester. The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb. Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29. He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 467 games, including 458 starts.
